• Primary Care Engagement in Childhood Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Mixed-Methods Study of Utilization, Preventive Care, and Barriers, Stanford University

  Childhood systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a rare, chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and damage throughout the body, leading to serious health complications. Managing cSLE requires regular follow-up with pediatric rheumatologists, primary care providers, and other specialists, but access to pediatric rheumatology is limited due to low numbers of specialized providers in the United States. Because lupus disproportionately affects marginalized communities—who often face additional barriers to healthcare—primary care plays a critical role in monitoring, health maintenance, and disease management. This study will examine how often children with cSLE see their primary care providers and whether this impacts their need for urgent or emergency care, as well as their ability to stay up to date on vaccines. We will also interview patients and parents to better understand the challenges they face in accessing primary care and how these challenges influence their healthcare decisions.
