Adrian Yao
Ph.D. Student in Materials Science and Engineering, admitted Autumn 2023
BioAdrian Yao is the Founder and Team Lead of STEER, a DOE-funded initiative at Stanford's Precourt Institute for Energy and SLAC. STEER focuses on the intersection of engineering, economics, and innovation to guide “what to build, where to innovate, and how to invest.” Prior to Stanford, Adrian spent 8 years in industry as the Founder and CTO of a Li-ion battery startup, EnPower, Inc., where he continues to serve as a board director. After having developed EnPower's technology from lab to pilot and validated performance gains with OEMs and cell makers, EnPower is now scaling domestic cell manufacturing in a multi-MWh manufacturing facility in Indianapolis, IN, spearheading the domestic production of Li-ion cells for high-performance applications. Adrian obtained his B.S. in Material Science & Engineering from Rice University in Houston, TX and is simultaneously pursuing his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering at Stanford. Adrian is originally born in Houston, TX but spent the majority of his childhood in Taipei, Taiwan prior to returning to the U.S. in 2010.

Bill Yen
Ph.D. Student in Electrical Engineering, admitted Autumn 2023
BioBill Yen is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University working in the area of low-power Internet of Things (IoT) systems. He is an interdisciplinary maker and environmental scientist passionate about solving issues related to food, water, and energy using smart technologies.
Yen's experience in industry (General Motors, CNH Industrial) and academic research (Northwestern - soil-powered computing, Stanford - low-power wireless communication) cultivated his interest in designing self-powered computing devices that boost system efficiency while lowering the environmental impact of existing processes. His work has been featured by The Independent, Fast Company, MIT Technology Review China, Hackster.io, and more. He is also a recipient of the Stanford Graduate Fellowship in Science & Engineering. -
Jeongwoong Yoon (Yoon)
Ph.D. Student in Bioengineering, admitted Autumn 2023
BioMy previous research focused on the development of toolkit for marine bivalve cell culture and transgene expression. Inspired by the experience, I am seeking to find efficient and universally applicable methods to study non-model organisms that lack research infrastructure. As a biologist, I am exploring how we can rewrite genetic code to understand and engineer multicellular body plan, harnessing synthetic biology and genomics tools.
