Jakeya Caruthers
Student, African and African American Studies
BioJakeya Caruthers is the Interim Associate Director of the Program in African & African-American Studies at Stanford University where she also earned her PhD in Anthropology of Education. Her dissertation, "'An Unusual Accommodation': Affect, Reason, and Relationality in Black Political Humor" advances a theory of black humor which deviates from established and under-contested interpretations of black comedic response to racial subjugation, interrogating instead ways that black curiosity, pluralist legitimation, and a sense of "second-person" relationality inform a sense of humor that, despite its precarious proximity to surrender, offers a viable method of comedic coping with the inevitabilities of racial struggle. Other research interests include black feminisms; theories of gender, sexuality, and embodiment; popular culture, visual culture, and media representation; and narratives of crisis and austerity. Some of her analytic musings can be found on The Feminist Wire and the Journal of Popular Music Studies, as well as in the classroom where she teaches courses on Black Feminist Theory, Black Women Artists and 20th Century Visual Culture, and Queer Afrofuturism. Her courses have earned her a Middlebrook Prize for Graduate Teaching and a fellowship with Stanford’s Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity. Before and throughout her studies, Jakeya has been involved with a number of organizations working toward social and economic justice.
