Writing Tutor, School of Engineering - Technical Communications ProgramBioKemi’s research interests include transnational, Afro-German, and migrant literature. Her work explores the representations of the inter- and intra-migrant relations in contemporary German migrant literature.
Before joining Stanford's German Department as a Ph.D. student in 2022, she earned a B.A. degree in German from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 2019, and completed her M.A. program in German from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, in 2022. She is a 2024/25 student fellow at the Hoover Institution, exploring topics about the migration issue in Germany and the AfD political party. She is also a fellow and mentor of the EDGE fellowship (Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education). -
Noor Amr
Ph.D. Student in Anthropology, admitted Autumn 2019
BioNoor Amr is a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Stanford University. She is currently writing her dissertation on the “church asylum” (Kirchenasyl) movement in Germany, paying attention to the relationship between sanctuary, religious difference, borders/migration, sovereignty, and political belonging. Her ethnographic research among churches and monasteries across Germany explores how Kirchenasyl—sanctuary from the state—becomes a means through which rejected asylum-seekers gain legibility as subjects worthy of legal recognition. Her broader theoretical interests include theories in political theology, religion/secularism, sanctuary and hospitality, histories of confinement, and the coloniality of asylum.
Prior to her doctoral work, Noor received a B.A. in Politics from Willamette University and an M.T.S. in Philosophy of Religion from Harvard Divinity School, where she was a Dean’s Fellow. -

BioDavid Barnstone studies the dynamics of media use in families with young children. He is particularly interested in how parents form beliefs about media effects and child development. Prior to Stanford, David worked as a full-time science writer and media relations specialist for several scientific organizations, including the American Physical Society, Society for Neuroscience, and Springer Nature.

Research Assistant, Artiles ProgramBioDavid T. Bates is currently a PhD candidate in the History of Education program at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education. His research focuses on the institutional change of universities owing to the emergence of the human sciences from the Progressive Era to the Cold War. As part of this research agenda, his dissertation explores how computer science became an undergraduate major. Previously, he worked in civic education and taught in elementary schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Boston, Massachusetts. He has degrees from the University of Rochester, the University of Chicago, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
