Virginia A. Marchman

Staff, PsychologyBioAs a developmental psychologist, my main areas of research are language development, language disorders, and early childhood development. I have worked extensively with parent report measures of early vocabulary, specifically, the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs). I serve on the CDI Advisory Board, and have worked on many projects including the Web-CDI, the CDI Scoring program, and Wordbank, an open repository of CDI instruments from many different languages. My current studies examine links between children's language processing skill, early learning environments, and individual differences in language development in monolingual and bilingual learners from diverse backgrounds. Our team also explores the importance of environmental stimulation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), showing that early engagement in developmental care activities (e.g., skin-to-skin care, holding, talking) has important consequences for positive neurological and behavioral outcomes. I am also involved in a large-scale NIH-funded project following infants born preterm from birth to 18 months, examining the neurodevelopmental and environmental influences on development in this at risk population. In addition to conducting studies that have a basic science focus, I have also been Director of Program Evaluation for the Habla Conmigo project, overseeing the evaluation of parenting intervention programs designed to facilitate caregiver engagement in Latina mothers and their young children.

Kate Petrova

Research Asst - Graduate, PsychologyBioKate Petrova is a third-year PhD student at the Stanford Psychophysiology Laboratory. In her research, Kate uses the tools of computational affective science to better understand how people use affect as a source of information in decision-making. Her other interests include applying computational modeling to formalize existing theories of emotion generation and regulation, as well as using a combination of behavioral experiments and intensive longitudinal methods to study interpersonal emotion regulation, Kate earned her A.B. in Psychology from Bryn Mawr College and spent several years working on the Harvard Study of Adult Development before joining SPL.

Current Role at StanfordI am the Administrative Services Manager in the Department of Psychology within the School of Humanities and Sciences. I manage the Faculty Administrative Associates who support the faculty of our department which offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees in Psychology, and conducts research in the areas of affective science, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, and social psychology. In addition to being the Administrative Services Manager, I also provide administrative support to Professors Grill-Spector, Wine, Fernald, McClelland, Gerstenberg, Goodman, Starck, Ellis and Gwilliams their students, and research groups. I am involved with the grant and IRB management for the research protocols of my faculty. I also provide website administration for our department.
