Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on high-precision neural interfaces and the development of next-generation brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for sensory and motor restoration. I am particularly interested in the biophysics of electrical stimulation, systems neuroscience, and the decoding of neural activity for high-fidelity communication and control. My work spans both fundamental and translational neuroscience.

Nazanin Mahinparvar
Postdoctoral Scholar, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioNazanin Mahinparvar, MD, graduated from Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran. Following medical school and before joining Stanford, she spent three years serving as a Physician Director at a rehabilitation and long-term care center for older adults, where she gained firsthand experience caring for patients with complex medical and functional needs and developed a deep appreciation for preserving mobility, independence, and quality of life.
She later joined the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine as a postdoctoral scholar. During her postdoctoral training, she has been deeply involved in innovative translational research focused on developing novel, non-opioid approaches for chronic pain, bridging fundamental pain mechanisms with the potential for meaningful clinical impact.
Her commitment to pain medicine extends beyond scientific curiosity. Having personally experienced chronic pain during adolescence, she developed an early understanding of how profoundly persistent pain can affect movement, independence, daily function, and quality of life. At Stanford, studying pain from a scientific perspective transformed that personal understanding into a broader professional mission: not simply to reduce pain, but to help individuals regain function, independence, and the ability to participate fully in their lives.
Her experiences—from caring for older adults with functional limitations to investigating the mechanisms and treatment of chronic pain at Stanford—ultimately led her to Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), a field that closely aligns with her philosophy of patient care and her vision for her future clinical and academic career. She is particularly drawn to the integration of PM&R, interventional pain medicine, and spine medicine, where understanding pain, restoring function, and improving quality of life come together.
Beyond research and clinical medicine, Dr. Mahinparvar is passionate about medical education and mentorship and serves as a Faculty Educator with the Stanford Anesthesia Summer Institute (SASI). She values creating opportunities for younger learners to develop technical skills, scientific curiosity, and confidence in medicine.
Outside of her academic work, she enjoys ice skating, dancing, weightlifting, playing the piano, and hands-on LEGO building—activities that reflect her appreciation for movement, creativity, precision, and lifelong learning. -

My work aims to transform cancer therapy and enhance patient outcomes. Leveraging insights from PSI's PROScan facility, I design a compact cyclotron-based proton therapy infrastructure for various radiation therapy setups.
