Julie Lutz, PhD

BioDr. Julie Lutz is a licensed clinical psychologist with specialty training in geropsychology/aging and suicide prevention. She received her PhD from West Virginia University, completed her predoctoral internship with an emphasis in geropsychology at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, and completed a T32 postdoctoral clinical research fellowship in suicide prevention at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. She worked in clinical research on suicide prevention among older Veterans at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System following postdoctoral fellowship. Her research and clinical work both focus on evidence-based behavioral interventions to address mental health, social connection, and coping with chronic health and functioning issues to reduce risk in later life.

Maryam S. Makowski, PhD

BioMaryam S. Makowski, PhD, FACN, CNS, NBC-HWC, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Associate Director of Scholarship and Health Promotion for Stanford Medicine’s WellMD & WellPhD program. As a medical nutrition scientist, Certified Nutrition Specialist, and National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Dr. Makowski provides nutrition consultations and well-being coaching to Stanford School of Medicine faculty, as well as Stanford Medicine residents and fellows through the WellConnect Program. She also provides mental health and nutrition coaching to patients at the Lifestyle Psychiatry Clinic as a Health and Wellness Coach in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
Dr. Makowski's research focuses on identifying nutritional strategies to minimize physician fatigue, stress, and sleep-related impairment. In her coaching, she employs evidence-based and personalized strategies to optimize the well-being and performance of her clients. In recognition of her contributions, she received the 2024 Annual Chairman's Award for Clinical Innovation and Service in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.
She earned her master's and doctoral degrees in clinical nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, and medical science from the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Makowski worked as a scientific associate at Toronto General Hospital–University Health Network and served as an advisor to Air Canada Rouge pilots and cabin crew on fatigue management. Throughout her career, she has authored highly cited scientific papers related to nutrition and well-being, making significant contributions to the field. She has delivered over 100 lectures, grand rounds, seminars, and webinars to thousands of physicians and physician trainees worldwide. -

Brittany Elizabeth Matheson, PhD

BioBrittany Matheson, PhD, is a clinical associate professor and licensed clinical psychologist in the Eating Disorders Clinic. She completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University, doctorate from the Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego, and APA clinical internship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCH)/Children’s Health Council. Dr. Matheson is a certified family-based treatment (FBT) therapist and consultant. She is also the director of the Stanford Eating Disorder Research Program Data Coordination Center and collaborates with colleagues on NIH-funded randomized clinical trials. Dr. Matheson's research interests include examining the psychosocial, neurocognitive, and familial factors related to disordered eating and excess weight gain in youth. She is interested in the development and implementation of evidence-based treatments for youth with disordered eating as well as better understanding factors that influence pediatric bariatric surgery outcomes. Dr. Matheson has specialized research and clinical expertise in the interplay among obesity, disordered eating, and autism spectrum disorder and is the director of psychological services for the LPCH adolescent metabolic and bariatric surgery program. She conducts comprehensive evaluations and provides evidence-based treatments for individuals across the age-spectrum with eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, and other specified feeding and eating disorders. Her recent research focuses on reducing access to care barriers by digitizing evidence-based treatments and utilizing technology to enhance treatment outcomes.

Mohamad Matout, MD, MSc

BioDr. Mohamad Matout is a board-certified, fellowship-trained psychiatrist with Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Matout specializes in using brain stimulation therapies to treat mental illnesses and neurological disorders that do not respond to standard treatments. These therapies include deep brain stimulation (DBS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). He serves as the attending psychiatrist for the Youth TMS Clinic at Stanford Health Care, providing transcranial magnetic stimulation for adolescents with treatment-resistant mood disorders. Dr. Matout also uses avatar therapy, an investigational treatment for psychosis that involves using a digital avatar to represent the voices a patient hears.
Dr. Matout’s research centers on brain health as a unifying framework for understanding psychiatric illness across the lifespan. Using a statistical modeling technique called psychometric network analysis, he maps how psychiatric symptoms mutually reinforce or suppress one another. This method reveals the structure of mental illness beyond traditional diagnostic categories. Dr. Matout developed the approach through his graduate work on brain health in HIV and post-COVID syndrome. He now applies it to neuromodulation (changing nerve signals for treatment) and other novel interventions.
Dr. Matout’s two primary lines of research are TMS for adolescents and avatar therapy. He also contributes to a broader range of neuromodulation studies through collaboration with the Brain Stimulation Lab at Stanford University School of Medicine. Beyond his clinical and research work, Dr. Matout is co-founder of AVAtalk Technologies Inc., a mental health technology startup focused on avatar-based therapeutic solutions.
Dr. Matout has authored peer-reviewed publications in Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, Quality of Life Research, and CEN Case Reports. He has also contributed chapters to Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment 2027 and Katzung & Trevor's Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (17th ed., McGraw-Hill, in press).
Dr. Matout is a member of the American Neuropsychiatric Association (ANPA) and the Brain Stimulation Society (BraSS), where he serves as assistant treasurer. -

M Windy McNerney, PhD

Windy McNerney is the Director of Biological Sciences for the MIRECC at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto, and a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) at Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. McNerney holds a particular passion for not only understanding the neurophysiology and biochemistry of mental health diseases, but also advocating for these invisible diseases. Her research focuses on neurodegeneration, depression, TBI, PTSD, and addiction. She is collaborating with researchers to integrate brain imaging and biochemical markers in hopes to better understand these diseases. She also is taking a lead role at the VA in investigating the biochemistry of magnetic brain stimulation and is the leader of the NeuroNado Laboratory. At Stanford University, she is the professor of two popular courses examining the biological and societal issues surrounding substance use disorder, with a major focus on opioids such as fentanyl. She has individually mentored over 25 students from underrepresented groups in STEM activities and leads monthly seminars aimed at facilitating career development. In her free time, she is a community advocate for the treatment of mental health and educates groups about the dangers of fentanyl.
She earned her BS from UC Davis and her PhD from the University of Notre Dame. While at ND, she interned at NASA Ames on Human Factors Engineering. She then went on to a postdoctoral position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (DOE), and then completed a fellowship at the WRIISC program at the VA and Stanford University.
