    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are interested in the neuronal mechanisms that underlie synchronous oscillatory activity in the thalamus, cortex and the massively interconnected thalamocortical system. Such oscillations are related to cognitive processes, normal sleep activities and certain forms of epilepsy. Our approach is an analysis of the discrete components (cells, synapses, microcircuits) that make up thalamic and cortical circuits, and reconstitution of components into in silico computational networks.

    BioDr. Fabio Iwamoto is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neuro-oncologist at Stanford Health Care. He is also a professor in the Department of Neurology & Neurological Sciences, Division of Neuro-Oncology, and a professor of neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery, Division of Neurosurgical Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Iwamoto cares for brain and spinal cord tumors, guiding patients from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up. He specializes in managing cancer that has spread to the brain or spinal cord, working with multiple specialists to develop individualized treatment plans. He also has expertise treating tumors called gliomas, including glioblastomas. Throughout the patient journey, Dr. Iwamoto addresses cancer-related complications, such as cancer therapy side effects, numbness, and memory problems. He strives to deliver the highest level of compassionate, patient-centered care, supporting patients and families through complex decisions and challenging moments.

    Dr. Iwamoto’s research focuses on developing and evaluating innovative treatments for brain tumors, particularly gliomas and glioblastomas. He studies immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and novel therapy combinations to improve tumor treatment. He leads several national and international clinical trials with the goal of bringing promising discoveries from the laboratory to patients.

    Dr. Iwamoto has authored many publications in leading journals, including Nature Cancer, Nature Medicine, Neuro-Oncology, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. He has published several book chapters on key topics in neuro-oncology, including emerging glioma treatments and the diagnosis and management of central nervous system tumors. He has also shared his expertise and research findings around the world at meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research, and international neuro-oncology forums.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe primary aim of my lab is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases by developing translational molecular imaging agents for visualizing neuroimmune interactions underlying conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsClinical interests include autonomic disorders, small fiber neuropathies and the development of effective methods of testing and treating these disorders. Prior work has focused on small fiber painful and autonomic neuropathies; syndromes of orthostatic intolerance and syncope; gastrointestinal motility dysfunction; cyclic vomiting; protacted Gastroesophageal Reflux; non-allergic rhinitis syndromes; and the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and normal or abnormal sleep. Additional areas of interest include the neurology of phonation and swallowing disorders, and peripheral nerve injury and repair.

    BioDr. Susy Jeng is a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at Stanford Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. Dr. Jeng received her A.B. at Harvard College and M.D. at the University of California, San Diego. She completed her pediatrics residency at University of California, San Francisco and is board-certified in pediatrics. After practicing general pediatrics for two years, she returned to UCSF for neurology residency. Upon completion of her residencies, she joined the faculty at Stanford as a general child neurologist with a special interest in medical education. She is the the Stanford Child Neurology Clerkship Director and Stanford Neurology Associate Clerkship Director for the medical students.

    BioDr. Jiao is a fellowship-trained, board-certified neurologist with the Movement Disorders Center at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences.

    Dr. Jiao has extensive experience providing comprehensive care for patients with different types of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease. She is fellowship-trained in both movement disorders and hospice and palliative medicine. Dr. Jiao is developing an interdisciplinary neuropalliative clinic that emphasizes planning for the future and maximizes quality of life for people living with chronic neurological illness.

    Dr. Jiao’s research efforts include a pilot study assessing the impact of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a treatment for Parkinson’s-related motor symptoms upon mood and pain. Specifically, this work focuses on identifying correlations between DBS targets and reductions in medications that address depression, anxiety, and impulsivity symptoms that result from Parkinson’s treatments. Dr. Jiao has also completed a pilot study focused upon narrative medicine interventions for people living with Parkinson’s disease.

    Dr. Jiao has published her work in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including Pain Medicine and the Journal of Neurosurgery. Dr. Jiao is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society , and the International Neuropalliative Care Society.
