Koray Ertan
Research Engineer, Rad/Radiological Sciences Laboratory
BioKoray Ertan received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University, Turkey, where he also completed his Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Ergin Atalar. During his doctoral studies, he conducted research at the National Magnetic Resonance Research Center (UMRAM) in Turkey. His dissertation focused on the development of novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies, including gradient array systems aimed at improving diagnostic image quality, reducing specific absorption rate (SAR), and shortening scan times.
In April 2019, he joined Prof. Brian Rutt’s group at Stanford University as a postdoctoral researcher. Shortly after, in June 2019, he was also appointed as a MINDED postdoctoral fellow. As part of the MINDED program, his research involved developing a system to modulate the permeability of the blood-brain barrier using focused radiofrequency heating from ultra-high field MRI transmit coils, with the goal of enhancing nanomedicine-based treatments for neurodevelopmental disorders.
He is currently a Research Scientist in the Radiological Sciences Laboratory at Stanford. His present work focuses on the design of next-generation head gradient coils and the analysis of peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) thresholds. He is developing a predictive framework to estimate subject-specific PNS limits using basic demographic data and localizer MRI scans, with the aim of enabling safer and more efficient MRI. -

Houri Esmaeilkhanian
Visiting Instructor, Ophthalmology Research/Clinical Trials
BioDr. Esmaeilkhanian is an accomplished medical doctor who graduated from Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) in 2018. Her passion for ophthalmology ignited during her medical studies, leading her to a focused research career in this field. After earning her degree, she dedicated her efforts to serving underprivileged communities while continuing her research at the Eye and Ear Research Institute of IUMS. In 2021, she advanced to the Doheny Eye Institute at UCLA, working in Prof. Vas Sadda’s lab, where she made significant contributions to research on diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), further honing her clinical expertise. In March 2023, Dr. Esmaeilkhanian joined Byers Eye Institute, pioneering treatments for corneal injuries using innovative stem cell therapies and hydrogels. Additionally, she plays a crucial role in collaborative clinical studies involving the first FDA-approved AI device for diagnosing diabetic retinopathy impacting patient care in both the Bay Area and underserved regions.

Amin Etemad, MBA, SSGB

BioAmin Etemad holds a Bachelor's degree in Management from HEC Montréal and an MBA in Medical Management from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, earned in 2008. He began his career as an Operations Manager at Amazon’s MSP5 fulfillment center in Shakopee, MN, before moving to Allina Health, where he served as a Process Improvement Manager within the supply chain team. Amin later transitioned to a central Quality Improvement role at Allina, where he contributed to Minnesota’s COVID-19 surge planning for the ED and ICU in 2020.
In the fall of 2020, Amin joined Stanford Health as a Quality Improvement Project Manager in Radiology. In 2023, he moved to the School of Medicine, where he now leads the quality improvement team in the Department of Surgery.
Outside of work, Amin is passionate about tennis, soccer, and music—playing both acoustic guitar and a traditional string instrument called the Santoor. He is fluent in five languages, having lived on three continents and in five countries. Raised in a family of over 10 medical professionals, Amin has a deep love for travel, exploring new cultures, and experiencing diverse cuisines. -

Raj Fadadu

BioRaj Fadadu is currently a dermatology resident physician at the University of California, San Diego. He has experience conducting epidemiology research projects, particularly related to environmental exposures and skin diseases (e.g., atopic dermatitis and psoriasis) as well as epigenetics (e.g., EWAS and epigenetic age acceleration). At Stanford, his research in Dr. Andres Cardenas's group focuses on the relationship between environmental exposures and epigenetic modifications. He also held leadership roles in local and national organizations involved in climate change advocacy and education, working to improve community and patient health. In addition, he is a strong advocate for health equity and increasing access to medical care for people experiencing homelessness and has implemented innovative projects to do so while serving as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow and Director of student-run free clinics in Berkeley, CA. For his impactful work, he was named an Environmental Education "30 Under 30" in 2022 and received the Excellence in Climate Leadership Award from the American Public Health Association in 2022 and Emerging Physician Leader Award from Health Care Without Harm in 2021.
He received a M.D. from UC San Francisco, M.S. degree in Health and Medical Sciences (with concentrations in Environmental Research and Healthcare Management) from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, and received a B.A. degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley (graduated with Highest Distinction and Research Honors). -
Muneeb A. Faiq

BioDr. Muneeb A. Faiq is a behavioral and metabolic neuroscientist and ophthalmology researcher whose work spans molecular biology, neuroimaging, and systems neuroscience. He has made several foundational contributions, including the first functional cloning of CYP1B1 in congenital glaucoma, implicating retinoic-acid signaling in Zika virus–associated microcephaly, identifying central insulin resistance as a mechanistic basis for glaucoma, and providing the first in vivo evidence for a glymphatic pathway in the optic nerve. With more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and over 4,000 citations, Dr. Faiq has earned international recognition, including the Emerging Vision Scientist Award – 2019 from the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research. He is widely regarded as the pioneer and principal architect of the discipline of psychosomatic ophthalmology, a field he helped conceptualize and establish, leading to the integration of ophthalmic clinical practice with mindfulness-based and psychosomatic medicine frameworks. Dr. Faiq is currently advancing the concept of neurometabolic syntax in vision and brain function — a unifying systems-level framework that integrates genetics, metabolism, and behavior to reconceptualize ophthalmic and neurological diseases through a mechanistic and interdisciplinary lens. He has been selected for the prestigious Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Achievement Award 2026.

Current Role at StanfordAs Senior Facilities Planner in the OFPM (Office of Facilities, Planning and Management) for the SoM (School of Medicine), I collaborate with Dept. Chairs, Faculty, Researchers, Staff and Facilities to optimize layouts for appx. 2M square feet of space as adjustments are needed to offices, labs, and teaching spaces across the campuses of Stanford University. I work with consultants, designers, project managers, furniture vendors, movers and others to determine the optimal solutions. After 30+ years of being in architectural firms working with educational institutions, I'm thrilled to be inside that setting and contributing to the success of the School of Medicine.
