Sara Johansen, MD

BioSara Johansen, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University. Dr. Johansen founded Stanford’s Digital Mental Health Clinic, where she leads initiatives to integrate innovative digital interventions into traditional therapeutic practices. Her work in the Digital Clinic focuses on bridging the gap between clinical research and real-world applications to improve mental health care delivery.
As Principle Investigator for the Digital Clinic's Research Division, Dr. Johansen leads ongoing research studies examining the clinical applications of digital therapeutics and AI-based interventions, generating evidence to inform best practices in technology-enabled mental health care. Dr. Johansen also holds appointments as a faculty advisor for Stanford Venture Studios and the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where she teaches about foundational concepts in behavioral health tech innovation, and she is a faculty affiliate with the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.
In industry, Dr. Johansen works a translational expert applying clinical principles to product development. She has particular expertise in the mental health impact of emerging technologies. She has served as Clinical Advisor to ieso Health and Sonia AI (YC '24), guiding evidence-driven development of generative AI for emotional support. Additionally, she has served as an expert advisor to TikTok and Meta in research and product development of safety features.
