Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy clinical interests are in the areas of Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring (IOM), clinical neurophysiology, electromyopgraphy and in the use of botulinum toxins in the treatment of neurologic disorders. Our IOM groups research is in the development of new and innovative techniques for monitoring the nervous system during surgical and endovascular procedures and how these alter surgical management and patient outcomes. I am also active in formulating national IOM practice guidelines.

Romain Lopez

Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar, GeneticsBioSince Fall 2021, I am a joint postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University and Genentech Research and Early Development, hosted by Jonathan Pritchard and Aviv Regev. I recently obtained my PhD degree from the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley, advised by Mike Jordan & Nir Yosef. My research interests lie at the intersection of statistics, computation and modeling with a focus on biological applications.
A significant part of my research is driven by building more statistically accurate and faster machine learning software for analyzing single-cell omics data. I developed single-cell Variational Inference (scVI), a flexible model and a scalable inference method for comprehensive analysis of single-cell transcriptomes. I co-developed scvi-tools, an open-source software suite for fully-probabilistic modeling of single-cell multi-omics data. You may learn more about these topics in my guest lecture of the Deep Learning in the Life Sciences class at MIT.
More generally, I am interested in the broader area of ML + Science. Deep generative models provide an appealing and flexible paradigm for learning distributions, but quite some work is needed to fully exploit them as part of a scientific hypothesis testing pipeline (e.g., causality, interpretability, disentanglement, decision-making).
Previously, I worked on counterfactual inference and offline policy learning methods in collaboration with technology companies. In 2018, I visited Le Song at Ant Financial in Hangzhou. In 2019, I visited Inderjit Dhillon at Amazon in Berkeley. Before graduate school, I obtained a MSc in applied mathematics from Ecole polytechnique, Palaiseau in 2016. Additionally, I worked as an intern at the Harvard Medical School with Allon Klein in 2016. I was born and grew up in Bedarieux, France. -

Karl Lorenz
Professor of Medicine (Primary Care and Population Health)
BioDr. Karl Lorenz, MD MSHS is a general internal medicine and palliative care physician, and Section chief of the VA Palo Alto-Stanford Palliative Care Program. Formerly at the VA Greater Los Angeles, Dr. Lorenz directed palliative care research at the VA Center for Innovation to Implementation and served on the faculty at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Lorenz is a member of the VA’s national Hospice and Palliative Care Program (HPC) leadership team, director of the operational palliative care Quality Improvement Resource Center (QuIRC), and adjunct facility staff member at RAND. Dr. Lorenz’s work and leadership has been influential to the field of palliative care research. Under Dr. Lorenz’s leadership, since 2009 the Quality Improvement Resource Center (QuIRC) has served as one of three national leadership Centers responsible for strategic and operational support of the VA’s national hospice and palliative care programs. QuIRC develops and implements provider facing electronic tools for the VA’s national electronic medical record to improve the quality of palliative care. In that role, Dr. Lorenz participates with the national leadership team in strategic planning, policy development, and providing resources to support operational efforts. Dr. Lorenz has contributed to the field of global palliative care, serving the World Health Organization in its development of Palliative Care for Older People and leading methods for Palliative Care Essential Medications.

BioDr. Javier Lorenzo is the Associate Division Chief of Anesthesia Critical Care in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. He is also a Medical Informatics Director for the critical care areas and serves as Co-Chair of the Patient Safety Committee for Stanford HealthCare.

Irene L. Llorente
Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery
BioOriginally from Spain, Irene L. Llorente joined the Neurosurgery Department at Stanford University in 2022. Following her undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Leon in Spain, Dr. Llorente completed a MS in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience between the Universities of Leon (Spain) and Florence (Italy). She conducted a postdoctoral fellowship in the Neurology Department at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA where she also started her independent career as a Research Assistant Professor. Her research interests are largely directed toward understanding the biology of white matter repair in central nervous system (CNS) disorders, with a special emphasis on human glial biology. She is particularly interested in leveraging the current technologies emerging in the stem cell field to develop more efficient and effective stem cell-based therapies for stroke and vascular dementia patients. These stem cell-based therapies will also apply to other CNS disorders including spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury in the future.

Alarice Cheng-Yi Lowe
Associate Professor of Pathology
BioDr. Lowe joined the School of Medicine faculty in 2019. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from MIT and her medical degree at UCSD, prior to residency and cytology fellowship at UCLA. In 2011, she joined the faculty at Brigham and Women's Hospital where she developed a research focus on Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) and the application of new technology to improve clinical and molecular diagnostics. Clinically, her interests focus on Cytopathology and Genitourinary Pathology.
