Andreas Tolias
Professor of Ophthalmology
BioAndreas Tolias is a faculty member at Stanford University, where he co-leads the Enigma Project. His research lies at the interface of neuroscience and AI, combining large-scale neuroscience experiments with machine learning to uncover the principles of natural intelligence. By focusing on perceptual inference and decision-making, his lab integrates systems and computational neuroscience with AI to decipher the network-level principles of intelligence. Dr. Tolias’s work aims to reverse-engineer these principles to create AI systems that are smarter, more robust, trustworthy, and efficient, while providing a powerful platform to test brain algorithms under complex natural tasks. He earned his B.A. and M.A. in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, a Ph.D. in Systems and Computational Neuroscience from MIT, and completed postdoctoral training in Neuroscience and Machine Learning at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen.

Sirin Triwutpipatkul

BioSirin Triwutpipatkul, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained cornea and refractive specialist. She completed her ophthalmology residency and cornea fellowship at the Department of Ophthalmology, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. She also serves in Thailand's Ministry of Justice healthcare system, participating in nationwide collaborative research.
Her clinical interests include corneal disease, corneal transplantation, ocular surface disease, infectious keratitis, dry eye disease, and refractive surgery. Her research focuses on randomized clinical trials, international collaborations, and the application of artificial intelligence in corneal and refractive diseases.
Dr.Sirin is currently a Clinical and Research fellow at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University, where she is involved in clinical and international research in cornea and external diseases.
Outside of medicine, she enjoys exploring new places, traveling, cycling, and is always on the hunt for a great local coffee shop :) -

Gabriel Velez, MD, PhD

Resident in OphthalmologyBioGabriel Velez is a PGY3 ophthalmology resident at Stanford. He received his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Winona State University in 2014. He completed his MD and PhD degrees at the University of Iowa. His PhD research focused on studying the structure of the calpain-5 (CAPN5) protein and its role in the development of Neovascular Inflammatory Vitreoretinopathy (NIV), a rare blinding eye disease. His research interests include translational proteomics, retinal disease, ocular oncology, structural biology, biophysical chemistry, drug design, and bioinformatics.
