Kelly Gaffney
Associate Professor of Photon Science and, by courtesy, of Chemistry
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe research team Professor Gaffney leads focuses on time resolved studies of chemical reactions. Recent advances in ultrafast x-ray lasers, like the LCLS at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, enable chemical reactions to be observed on the natural time and length scales of the chemical bond – femtoseconds and Ångströms. The knowledge gained from x-ray and optical laser studies will be used to spark new approaches to photo-catalysis and chemical synthesis.

Matthew W Garrett
Development Officer, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
BioMatt Garrett is the Director of Technology Transfer and Private Partnerships at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, managed and operated by Stanford University. Matt manages the technology transfer strategy and mission operations at SLAC and is the focal point for private industry engagement across the SLAC complex.
Prior to joining SLAC, Matt served as Commercialization Manager in the Technology Transfer Office at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), where he managed the intellectual property portfolio and commercial licensing of technologies originating from ORNL’s Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate, National Security Sciences Directorate, and Energy and Transportation Science Division. Matt also managed the open source and commercial copyright processes at ORNL, serving on the TTWG Software Best Practices Subcommittee. While at ORNL, Matt also served as a Research Partnerships Agreement Manager, negotiating partnership agreements such as CRADAs, SPPs, and ACTs for the Materials Science and Engineering Division.
Prior to his roles at ORNL, Matt served as deputy director of the Center for Technical Intelligence Studies and Research at the Air Force Institute of Technology, where he managed a research portfolio related to electro-optical remote sensing and infrared hyperspectral imaging. Matt also negotiated CRADAs for the center, interfacing with several defense contractors working with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the National Air Space Intelligence Center (NASIC). ‘
Matt also previously served as a senior scientist/program manager with Nomadics, Inc. While with the company, he participated in the development and manufacturing of handheld and robot-mounted explosives detection platforms, leveraging amplifying fluorescent polymer technology licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he served as a visiting scientist in the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies. The detection platform was named one of the US Army’s Top 10 Inventions of 2005, which led to its eventual acquisition by ICx Technologies and FLIR Systems. -

Jörgen Gladh
Postdoctoral Scholar, Photon Science, SLAC
BioJörgen has a PhD in chemical physics. His educational background is as a graduated engineer in technical physics, which he received at Karlstad University, Sweden, before he did his PhD, at Stockholm University, Sweden. After the PhD he worked for ~2 years in Anders Nilsson's research group at Stockholm University, before he came to Stanford and joined Tony F. Heinz's research group. His research has been around heterogeneous catalysis on metal surfaces, which is the subject for the project that he is working on here at Stanford and SLAC.
