    BioI received my PhD in Classics from Stanford University in 2023. My research investigated the role of social networks in stabilizing, disrupting, and driving economic behaviors within ancient and premodern economies. My dissertation research combined archaeological and computational analyses to explore the relationship between community social relationships, wine production and drinking practices, and market exchange in the ancient Mediterranean world. Working as a computational archaeologist, my current scholarship combines expertise in archaeology, history, network science, sociology, and computer science to develop new models of socioeconomic interaction, and uses the ancient Mediterranean world as an optimal small data laboratory in which to test these models in the face of data scarcity. My broader academic research interests include Classical and Mediterranean archaeology, ancient economic history, economic sociology, social network analysis, and the computational study of the human past. I have worked on maritime and terrestrial archaeological projects across Italy, Turkey, Greece, and the United States, focusing specifically on ceramic materials. I was previously the Thomas F. Cooper Post-Doctoral Fellow and a Visiting Assistant Professor in Classics at Oberlin College, where I taught courses on Greek and Roman history, language, and culture, as well as ancient Greek and Latin language. I am excited to be back at Stanford as an Instructor for Continuing Studies.

    BioJane Willenbring joined Stanford as an Associate Professor in the summer of 2020. Jane is a geologist who solves problems related to the Earth surface. Her research is primarily done to understand the evolution of the Earth’s surface - especially how landscapes are affected by tectonics, climate change, and life. She and her research group use geochemical techniques, high-resolution topographic data, field observations, and, when possible, couple these data to landscape evolution numerical models and ice sheet models. The geochemical tools she uses and develops often include cosmogenic nuclide systems, which provide powerful, novel methods to constrain rates of erosion and mineral weathering. Jane has also started to organize citizen science campaigns and apply basic science principles to problems of human health with an ultimate broader impact goal of cleaning up urban areas and environments impacted by agriculture. She received her B.Sc. with honors from the North Dakota State University where she was a McNair Scholar and in the NDSU scholars program. She holds a Masters degree from Boston University. Her Ph.D. is in Earth Science from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada where she was a Killam Scholar. She was a Synthesis Postdoctoral Fellow through the National Center for Earth Surface Dynamics at the Saint Anthony Falls Lab at the University of Minnesota, and an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow and then subsequently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Helmholz GFZ Potsdam, Germany. Jane was previously an Associate Professor in the Geosciences Research Division and Thomas and Evelyn Page Chancellor's Endowed Faculty Fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego where she was the director of the Scripps Cosmogenic Isotope Laboratory (SCI-Lab). She was also a tenure-track professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She will be a Stanford University Gabilan Faculty Fellow in 2021-2023. She is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and was the inaugural recipient of the Marguerite T. Williams award from the American Geophysical Union.

    Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery

    BioFrank Willett is co-director of the Neural Prosthetics Translational Laboratory. Our group develops brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to restore movement and communication to people with neurological disorders. Recent contributions include handwriting and speech-based BCIs that set new records for communication speed and accuracy in people with paralysis. More broadly, we are interested in computational approaches to understanding brain function and recordings, with a focus on how the human brain represents movement and language.

    BioDr. Williams is a fellowship-trained pulmonologist specializing in pulmonary critical care medicine. She has board certification in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and internal medicine.

    She is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    For each patient, Dr. Williams develops a comprehensive and compassionate care plan. Her goal is to help every individual achieve the best possible lung health and quality of life.

    Patient reviews praise the quality of the care she delivers, her thoroughness, and her patient skills.

    Dr. Williams has participated in clinical research studies. She has published articles on autoimmune disease involving interstitial lung disease, COPD, and life-threatening pulmonary complications associated with leukemia. She also co-authored an article on the development of guidelines for identifying and managing post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms associated with critical illness.

    Her work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Internal Medicine, and elsewhere. She also has written chapters in books on critical care medicine and clinical decision-making.

    Dr. Williams speaks English and both written and oral medical Spanish. In her free time, she enjoys soccer and distance running.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsA revolution is under way in psychiatry. We can now understand mental illness as an expression of underlying brain circuit disruptions, shaped by experience and genetics. Our lab is defining precision brain circuit biotypes for depression, anxiety and related disorders. We integrate large amounts of brain imaging, behavioral and clinical data and computational approaches. Biotypes are used in personalized intervention studies with selective drugs, neuromodulation and exploratory therapeutics.
