Alfredo Urdaneta
Clinical Associate Professor, Emergency Medicine
BioDr. Alfredo Urdaneta is a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he serves as the Medical Director of Stanford Life Flight. His academic and clinical work focuses on the modernization of prehospital and retrieval critical care systems, the expansion of prolonged field care scope of practice, and the optimization of advanced resuscitation protocols in high-acuity aeromedical environments.
His research program encompasses critical care trial operations and acute resuscitation science. Dr. Urdaneta serves as a site Co-Investigator for National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical trials, including the RECOVER initiative investigating the pathobiology and long-term sequelae of post-acute COVID-19, and the AIMS study focused on acute sepsis sub-phenotyping and precision resuscitation strategies in the intensive care unit.
In the aeromedical and emergency medicine communities, Dr. Urdaneta holds national leadership roles dedicated to governance, clinical standards, and professional ethics. He serves as Chair of the Standards and Research Committee for the Air Medical Physician Association (AMPA) and as Vice Chair of the Ethics Committee for the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM). Through these appointments and presentations at national meetings, he helps shape national clinical guidelines, aeromedical safety frameworks, and ethical standards across emergency and transport medicine.
In addition to his civilian academic appointments, Dr. Urdaneta serves as a Colonel (O-6) in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps. His military career includes serving as the Command Surgeon for the 63d Readiness Division, where he provided executive medical oversight, clinical governance, and readiness management across multi-state operational formations. His extensive background in military operational medicine directly informs his academic scholarship in mass casualty management, austere resuscitation, and the bilateral translation of combat casualty care innovations into civilian trauma and critical care systems.
Dr. Urdaneta earned his B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and his M.D. from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a general surgery internship at the University of Illinois, an emergency medicine residency at UCSF Fresno, and advanced subspecialty fellowship training in Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine at the University of Washington. -
Vance Vanier, M.D.
Clinical Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsPrimary and secondary prevention of disease through the use of preventive genomic medicine. Patients who have greater insight into their genetic risk for different diseases may change their lifestyles and decrease their probablity of succumbing to conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular events. Personalized screening regimens for those at increased genetic risk, such as for colon cancer, is another important application worthy of validation.
