Kristin McFadden

BioKristin McFadden is a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at Stanford and a JD Candidate at the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law. Her research broadly focuses on the socio-legal mechanisms of dispossession and disenfranchisement in the American South. Her dissertation investigates the risk of Black land dispossession in the South Carolina Low Country with particular attention to heirs property as a multifaceted legal and political category. Kristin received her B.A. in Anthropology and African American Studies from Emory University, where she was a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow, and received her M.A. in Anthropology from Stanford. Kristin has previously worked as a political organizer in rural regions of South Carolina and research analyst with the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs.

Niraj Mehta

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsPlants provide some of the most important drugs in current clinical use. It can be challenging to chemically synthesize these drugs or sustainably source them from producer plants. These issues could be alleviated if their biosynthetic genes are engineered into heterologous organisms for large-scale production. I am interested in a) understanding how plants produce these valuable drugs and b) engineering the sustainable production of these drugs into other plants for large-scale production.

He is interested in digital VLSI design, domain-specific accelerators, and design automation.

Maria Jose Melendrez

BioMaria Jose (she/her/they) is a second-year doctoral student whose research focuses on access and equity for first-generation, immigrant, and disabled students, particularly those navigating intersecting identities. Grounded in her training in sociology, her work examines how institutional contexts, student agency, and social networks shape students’ educational experiences, pathways, and opportunities for meaningful learning.
Prior to her doctoral studies, Maria Jose worked with students, families, faculty, and administrators across student affairs and academic affairs. In these roles, she translated her classroom learning and research commitments into practice by supporting students as they navigated institutional systems and pursued their educational goals.
As a doctoral student, Maria Jose examines how meritocratic narratives shape institutional understandings of access, equity, and student success. Their work also explores the social construction of disability, with particular attention to burn-survivor students’ experiences of visibility, embodiment, belonging, and access in educational spaces.
