Jill Laufer
Postdoctoral Scholar, Education
BioJill R. Laufer researches civic engagement, education and learning, communication and media, and political behavior, with a particular focus on youth issues and public policy. She is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in The Politics of Education Lab at Stanford University's Graduate School of Education.
Using experimental, survey, and computational methods, she examines how people, especially young people, engage with politics in a polarized and rapidly changing media and political landscape, and how media coverage and mobilization messaging shape trust and participation. She is a co-author of "Catching Fire in the News: The Necessary Conditions for Media Storms" (Cambridge University Press, 2026), and her work has appeared in Nature, The Forum and the SSRC, and has won TESS Young Investigators' Competition for Experimental research. Before entering academia, she worked as a creative director and visual designer in medical and health education, an experience that continues to influence her approach to research, teaching, and public engagement.
She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Davis in 2025, her M.A. in Political Science with distinction from San Francisco State University, and her B.A. in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University.
