Andrés A. Plazas Malagón
Rubin Operations Scientists, Fundamental Physics Directorate
BioAndrés A. Plazas Malagón is a Colombian-American astrophysicist who obtained his degree in physics at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. He subsequently moved to the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) to obtain a doctoral degree in physics and astronomy. At Penn, he received the Zaccheus Daniel Foundation for Astronomical Science award. He also became part of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) project, working on weak gravitational lensing and testing the detectors of the Dark Energy Camera used by DES at the Department of Energy Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Fermilab. He continued his work on observational cosmology and weak lensing as a research associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he became part of the Dark Energy Science Collaboration of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). For his work in characterizing systematic errors in weak gravitational lensing, he received in 2016 the Fundación Alejandro Ángel Escobar National Prize in Natural and Exact Sciences, considered the highest scientific recognition in his native Colombia.
He joined the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2015 as a Caltech Postdoctoral Scholar, working on understanding systematic errors in weak lensing from the infrared detectors that will be used by the wide-field imager of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Dr. Plazas Malagón also has worked as a Research Scientist at the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, as part of the Cosmoquest project for community science. Subsequently, he worked at Princeton University as an Associate Research Scholar in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences as part of the Algorithms and Pipelines team of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
He currently works as Rubin Operations Scientist in the Rubin Community Science Team as part of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University, and the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (SLAC/Stanford University).
Dr. Plazas Malagón is also an Affiliate at the Department of Physics of Harvard University, a Visiting Research Scientist at Boston University, and a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Physics of Washington University in St. Louis. He is the founder of the Astronomy on Tap satellite branches in St. Louis and Trenton (NJ), the creator and co-host of the astronomy podcast in Spanish “Visión Cósmica”, the proposer and co-organizer of the first ever Tower Grove Park Astronomy Festival in St. Louis, the proposer and co-organizer of the first-ever outreach event in Spanish at the Harvard College Observatory, and frequently participates in Science Education and Public Outreach events in Spanish and English as a NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador volunteer. -

BioMy research focuses on using state-of-the-art X-ray facilities such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC to study ultra-fast dynamics in materials. I am especially interested in how X-ray speckle phenomena can be used to understand the role fluctuations play in the emergence of novel quantum phases in low-dimensional materials.

Malinda Pola

BioMalinda Pola joined the Stanford University Doerr School of Sustainability in December 2022 as an Administrative Associate for the Department of Earth System Science (ESS) and is currently an Administrative Associate for Environmental Social Sciences (ESoS). Malinda started her career at Stanford in 2014 as a Faculty Assistant at the Graduate School of Business where she assisted faculty with research needs, supported classes, and processed financial transactions for 8 years.
Malinda holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Environmental Studies with a minor in Business from San José State University. -
Danielle Polevoi
Instructional Faculty, Physician Assistant Studies
BioDanielle Polevoi is a recently board certified physician assistant who graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine’s Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program with a concentration in Medical Education. During PA school, she was selected as one of fifteen students nationwide to participate in The PAEA’s Future Educator Fellowship program. She was also chosen by Stanford MSPA faculty as one of three students in the Class of 2022 to represent our program in the AAPA Virtual Challenge Bowl in 2021.
Prior to getting her master's degree, Danielle attended UCLA where she received a B.S. in Biology. In order to gain patient care experience for PA school, she worked as an Emergency Department Scribe at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and as a medical assistant in a gynecologic surgery group.
Danielle was born and raised in San Francisco. She is eager to begin her career at SHC in the Medical ICU taking care of critically ill patients. -
Elizabeth Ponder

BioElizabeth Ponder is a recognized leader in innovation and translation at the non-profit / for profit interface. Ponder has spent 15+ years building and scaling high-impact research organizations at the intersection of biomedical innovation, global health, and drug development — focused on ensuring the human health impact of transformative scientific discoveries while fostering the next generation of scientists.
As Executive Director of Sarafan ChEM-H, Ponder leads the institute's efforts to drive academic innovation and training at the interface of molecular disciplines. Ponder oversees Sarafan ChEM-H's research, education, and translational programs, guiding initiatives that foster collaboration, innovation, and impact.
With over a decade at Stanford, Ponder has changed the landscape of interdisciplinary molecular research and training. Under her leadership, the institute recruited 19 faculty representing the “scientific maverick” phenotype from diverse fields of molecular research, including 2022 Nobel Prize laureate Carolyn Bertozzi; established an innovative Ph.D. training program (NIH and philanthropy-funded) serving 150+ doctoral trainees since 2015; and designed and opened a 235,000 sq ft interdisciplinary research complex to house the institute. Her responsibilities include oversight of strategy, planning, and operations for the institute.
Most recently, Ponder oversaw the design and implementation of the “Nucleus" as a scalable model for democratizing access to cutting-edge research technologies and expertise and leveraged the Nucleus infrastructure to support a 6-year pilot program for strategic translational investments in new medicines based on Stanford discoveries, the Stanford Innovative Medicines Accelerator. The Nucleus has touched more than 600 research projects in 200+ faculty labs across the Stanford campus contributing to patents, publications, and new grant funding. The translational portfolio included 135+ projects, 8 successful exits to VC-backed biotechnology companies, and 9 clinical trials of experimental therapeutics, including 2 first-in-human trials of experimental therapeutics discovered and developed entirely within Stanford. Ponder also played a critical role in external relationship management for the portfolio, ranging from key philanthropic donors to biopharmaceutical partners and venture capital investors.
Ponder was recognized for leadership excellence at Stanford through selection for Leadership@Stanford (2025 cohort) and the 2023 Marsh O'Neill Award for exceptional support of Stanford's research enterprise.
Before joining Stanford, Ponder led policy, research, and training initiatives at the global health - biopharmaceutical industry interface. She served as Executive Director of the Wheeler Center for Emerging & Neglected Diseases at UC Berkeley where she designed and launched new programs addressing neglected disease research. She also served in roles of increasing responsibility in Scientific Affairs at BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH), where she provided scientific leadership to project teams and executive leadership, advancing BVGH's mission to increase innovative biotech participation in drug, vaccine, and diagnostic development for neglected diseases of the developing world.
Ponder completed her Ph.D. and postdoctoral research at Stanford in the department of microbiology and immunology, supported by an NSF National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and Stanford Dean’s postdoctoral fellowship. She published multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications focused on protease function and drug target potential in Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes human malaria. Her early work in infectious diseases inspired her life-long passion for improving human health through scientific innovation.
