Asad L. Asad
Associate Professor of Sociology
BioAsad L. Asad is Associate Professor of Sociology at Stanford University, where he is a faculty affiliate of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. Bridging the sociology of immigration, race/ethnicity, law, and health, his research examines how institutional categories relate to social control and inequality. His multi-method work focuses on the U.S. immigration system and its disproportionate effects on Latino citizens and noncitizens. Current research projects examine the effects of immigration enforcement on health, the federal judiciary's role in immigration enforcement, and the capacity of immigrant-serving organizations to transform the U.S. immigration system.

BioI'm a PhD student in Electrical Engineering at Stanford, advised by Prof. Euan Ashley and co-advised by Prof. Ehsan Adeli and Prof. Fei-Fei Li. I build multimodal, agentic AI systems that reason jointly over heterogeneous data, and I develop evaluations that expose where frontier multimodal models fail.
My work is supported by the Amazon AI PhD Fellowship and the Stanford HAI Graduate Fellowship.

Lewis Abedi Asante
Fellow, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences
BioLewis Abedi Asante is an Associate Professor in Housing and Urban Development at the Kumasi Technical University and a Fellow at Center for Advanced Study in the Bahavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He is an interdisciplinary urban geography scholar with expertise in housing, urban development, environment and sustainability. Since 2018, he has built an impressive publication record of about 30 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals including Housing Studies, Cities, Habitat International, Journal of Housing and the Built Environment, Urban Geography, Geoforum and Environment and Urbanisation. His scholarship has advanced southern urban theory through novel concepts including hybrid entrepreneurial urban governance, mal-ket, politically induced displacement, and wetland gentrification. He has secured multiple research grants as Co-Principal Investigator, with support from the German Research Foundation and the Cambridge Africa Alborada Research Fund. His consultancy experience includes work on the nexus between land and affordable housing for the World Bank and another on urban politics and political economy of African cities for the African Cities Research Consortium. Overall, Prof Asante is a leading African urban scholar whose work bridges theory, policy, and practice, offering contextually grounded and innovative insights into complex urban challenges on the continent.
