On Leave from 06/15/2024 To 03/22/2025BioDr. Lund was born in Duluth, MN and attended Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He received his general surgical training at the MGH in Boston, and his pediatric surgical training at Boston Children's Hospital. His initial career was spent as a trauma, transplant and general pediatric surgeon at Boston Children's. In 1999, he became Surgeon-in-Chief of the University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital in in Madison, and in 2001 became Chair of General Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2011, he became Executive Vice President of the Phoenix Children's Medical Group and Surgeon-in-Chief at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Dr. Lund joined the Stanford faculty in Pediatric Surgery and as Associate Dean of the Faculty in Pediatrics and Obstetrics (Clinical Affairs) as well as Chief Medical Officer at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in March, 2015. In March of 2018 and through January of 2019, Dr. Lund served as interim President and CEO of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

Matthew Lungren
Adjunct Professor, Biomedical Data Science
BioDr. Lungren is Chief Data Science Officer for Microsoft Health & Life Sciences where he focuses on translating cutting edge technology, including generative AI and cloud services, into innovative healthcare applications. As a physician and clinical machine learning researcher, he maintains a part-time clinical practice at UCSF while also continuing his research and teaching roles as adjunct professor at Stanford University.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Dr Lungren was a clinical interventional radiologist and research faculty at Stanford University Medical School where he led the Stanford Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imaging (AIMI). He later served as Principal for Clinical AI/ML at Amazon Web Services in World Wide Public Sector Healthcare, focusing on business development for clinical machine learning technologies in the public cloud.
His scientific work has led to more than 150 publications, including work on multi-modal data fusion models for healthcare applications, new computer vision and natural language processing approaches for healthcare specific domains, opportunistic screening with machine learning for public health applications, open medical data as public good, prospective clinical trials for clinical AI translation, and application of generative AI in healthcare. He has served as advisor for early stage startups and large fortune-500 companies on healthcare AI technology development and go-to-market strategy. Dr. Lungren's work has been featured in national news outlets such as NPR, Vice News, Scientific American, and he regularly speaks at national and international scientific meetings on the topic of AI in healthcare.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study how neurons are organized into specialized circuits to perform specific functions and how these circuits are assembled during development. We have developed molecular-genetic and viral tools, and are combining them with transcriptomic, proteomic, physiological, and behavioral approaches to study these problems. Topics include: 1) assembly of the fly olfactory circuit; 2) assembly of neural circuits in the mouse brain; 3) organization and function of neural circuits; 4) Tool development.

Simon Sihang Luo

BioSimon Sihang Luo is a political theorist whose work focuses on comparative political theory, contemporary political theory, and radicalism. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Simon’s current book project investigates the multiple uses of the memories of the Cultural Revolution in theoretical debates in the contemporary Chinese intellectual sphere. By tracing the genealogy of Cultural Revolution memories in post-Mao China, the book project demonstrates how political actors holding different ideological positions make the Cultural Revolution a usable past as they articulate different visions of China’s political future. By so doing, the book project analyzes how the past is useful for democratic and antidemocratic politics in a rapidly changing society, and how narratives of a revolutionary historical event constitute a repertoire of political knowledge for the public sphere.
Simon has published scholarly articles about democratic theory and global encounters of ideas. In public writings in both English and Chinese, Simon has written about the history of political thought, political emotions, historical interpretations, labor politics, and the transnational dissemination of political knowledge.
Simon has taught multiple courses, in various roles, in political theory, Chinese politics, American politics, and ethics. At Stanford, Simon will continue to bring his research interests to the pressing issues in domestic and global politics of our age in his classroom, and offer courses related to political memories, citizenship, radical political theory, and the rise of China.
