Charles Roques-Carmes
Postdoctoral Scholar, Electrical Engineering
BioCharles Roques-Carmes is a Science Fellow at Stanford and an incoming Assistant Professor at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). His lab studies and engineers subwavelength light–matter interactions to unlock quantum technologies, advanced microscopes, and next-generation communications and computing platforms—combining rigorous theory with ultrafast electron microscopy, X-ray imaging, and quantum sensing to turn insights into devices. Before joining ISTA, Charles was a Stanford Science Fellow at Stanford University and a Visiting Scientist at MIT, where he earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 2022. Charles has delivered 40+ invited talks at major venues including APS, CLEO, and SPIE.
In 2025, he received the inaugural Photonics Innovation Award in honor of Federico Capasso for pioneering achievements that broaden photonics’ frontiers and connect fundamentals to real-world impact; Charles is widely regarded as one of the founders of the emerging field of nanophotonic scintillation. His honors include numerous distinctions such as Forbes 30 Under 30 (Science, 2023), the Stanford Science Fellowship, the MathWorks Engineering Fellowship, the Robert B. Guenassia Award, and a Carnot Foundation Fellowship. He holds M.S. degrees from MIT (2018) and École Polytechnique (2016), and a B.S. from École Polytechnique (2015). -
Jonathan Rosa

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am currently working on two book projects through which I am continuing to develop frameworks for understanding ethnoracial, linguistic, and educational formations. The first examines racial reckonings across distinctive societal contexts by interweaving ethnographic analysis of diasporic Puerto Rican experiences and broader constructions of Latinidad that illustrate race and ethnicity as colonial and communicative predicaments. The second spotlights decolonial approaches to the creation of collective well-being through educational and societal transformations based on longstanding community collaborations in Chicago.

Michael Rosales
SI Instructor, Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies
BioMr. Michael Rosales has been teaching engineering for the past 17 years, specializing in a wide range of disciplines including CADD, electrical systems, robotics, renewable resources, CNC manufacturing, and aerospace. He actively coaches high school VEX Robotics and Hydrogen RC Car Racing teams, with his students having earned spots at both state and world championships. This August, his teams will compete internationally in Germany. Mr. Rosales is married to Ashley and has two children—CJ, a freshman at Jesuit High School, and Elise, a 6th grader at St. Ignatius.

Luca Rosalia
Postdoctoral Scholar, Bioengineering
BioLuca Rosalia received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Glasgow (UK). During his studies, he visited the National University of Singapore and the University of Cambridge, where he gained his first exposure to the fields of soft robotics and tissue biomechanics. He pursued doctoral studies in the Health Sciences and Technology (HST) Ph.D. program of Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the lab of Ellen Roche and he's currently at Stanford University as a Postdoctoral Scholar in Bioengineering in the Skylar-Scott lab.
His doctoral work primarily focused on high-fidelity and patient-specific soft robotic preclinical models of valvular heart disease, congenital defects, and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Luca leveraged these platforms for the testing and development of medical devices through several partnerships with industry. During his studies, he also worked as an R&D engineer in the Structural Heart division of Abbott Laboratories on the development of transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR). He also gained clinical experience at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Boston and at Boston Children's Hospital. In the Skylar-Scott lab, Luca will be working on whole-heart bioprinting. -
Lisa Goldman Rosas

BioLisa Goldman Rosas, PhD MPH is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health and the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health at Stanford School of Medicine. An epidemiologist by training, Dr. Goldman Rosas’ research focuses on addressing disparities in diet-related chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, depression, and cancer especially for those who face food insecurity. This research features rigorous quantitative and qualitative methodologies, participatory qualitative approaches, and shared leadership with patient and community partners. She is passionate about integrating patients, caregivers, community organizations, and other key stakeholders in the research process in order to affect the greatest improvements in health and well-being. As a reflection of this passion, Dr. Goldman Rosas serves as the Faculty Director for the School of Medicine Office of Community Engagement, Co-Director of Community-Engaged Research for the Office of Cancer Health Equity, and Director of the Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement Core for the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. In these roles, she supports other faculty and patient and community partners to develop sustainable and meaningful partnerships to support transformative research. In addition to research, she teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels and has a special focus on increasing capacity in community engagement methods.
