BioShivam Vedak, MD, MBA, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology-Neuroscience from the Schreyer Honors College at The Pennsylvania State University, followed by a dual MD/MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UIC, where he was honored as the institution’s American College of Physicians Outstanding Resident of the Year in 2022, and subsequently completed a fellowship in Clinical Informatics at Stanford.

Strategic Initiatives Advisor, Human and Planetary HealthBioErika Veidis is the Strategic Initiatives Advisor for the Stanford Center for Human and Planetary Health, where she supports a range of efforts focused on community engagement, outreach, education, and impact. Prior to this role, Erika directed the forestry program at the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, where she led funding and capacity-building initiatives focused on forest restoration and wildfire resilience, and served as program manager for the Stanford Center for Human and Planetary Health and Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, where she led policy influence and strategic communications initiatives, coordinated research and outreach programs, and designed and implemented curricula for undergraduate and graduate students in planetary health and environmental systems thinking. Erika also previously built and managed a global network of 200+ universities, NGOs, research institutes, and government entities investigating the linkages between global environmental change and public health through the Planetary Health Alliance.
Erika has published on the health and social dimensions of climate change and other environmental challenges, ranging from wildfires to plastic pollution to heat stress. She graduated from Harvard University in 2015 with a BA in Government and Mind/Brain/Behavior, where she studied the sociological determinants of community resilience and adaptation responses, particularly in response to economic and political stress, and obtained an MBA from the California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo in 2016, where she focused on environmental economics, nonprofit and philanthropic strategy, and corporate sustainability. -
MANUEL RAFAEL VEJAR

BioManuel (Manny) Vejar is a postdoctoral scholar at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, specializing in synchrotron X-ray fluorescence imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to study environmental and rhizosphere biogeochemistry at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource.
He received his Ph.D. in the Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences department at the University of Notre Dame in 2024. His doctoral research focused on the impacts of iron-oxide mineral complexity on the fate and transport of plutonium in nuclear waste repository and/or legacy environmental contamination settings. Specifically, he studied the influence of Al-substitution in iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals on the redox and speciation behavior of plutonium at the mineral-water interface, employing M4-edge high-energy resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HERFD-XANES) spectroscopy to determine the oxidation state and L3-edge extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy to determine coordination environment of the plutonium associated with these minerals.
He has over 7 years of experience with synchrotron techniques (micro-X-ray fluorescence imaging, XANES, and EXAFS), and their applications to study metal(loid)s in environmental systems. During his career, Manny has conducted work at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource, the Advanced Photon Source, and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, while collaborating with Chapman University, the Institute of Resource Ecology at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, and more recently Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, and Livermore national labs, and the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez. Prior to his Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame, Manny obtained his B.Sc. in Geology from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. -

Maria Del Socorro Velazquez
Social Science Research Scholar
BioMaria is Stanford Provostial Fellow/Academic Staff Researcher in the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Her research examines housing, educational opportunity, educational policy, and place. She draws on qualitative methods and uses an interdisciplinary framework to draw attention to the socially constructed nature of inequities in schools and school communities. Relatedly, her work considers the efforts parents, educators, and community members take to contest and disrupt inequities in schools and school communities towards creating transformative opportunities for youth.
Maria’s collaborative research and publications contribute to scholars’ and educational leaders’ understanding of the housing-school nexus, school-prison nexus, and school organizational policies and practices that contribute to categorical inequalities. Maria holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.A. in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. -

Gabriel Velez, MD, PhD

BioGabriel Velez is a PGY3 ophthalmology resident at Stanford. He received his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Winona State University in 2014. He completed his MD and PhD degrees at the University of Iowa. His PhD research focused on studying the structure of the calpain-5 (CAPN5) protein and its role in the development of Neovascular Inflammatory Vitreoretinopathy (NIV), a rare blinding eye disease. His research interests include translational proteomics, retinal disease, ocular oncology, structural biology, biophysical chemistry, drug design, and bioinformatics.

Juliana Velez-Gomez

BioJuliana Vélez (she/her) is a postdoctoral researcher with the Natural Capital Project, studying land-use change and vector-borne disease risk. Her research applies quantitative ecological methods to understand interactions among species, their habitat, and anthropogenic disturbance. Juliana's work incorporates ecological experimentation and collaborations with decision makers to assess the effectiveness of conservation actions for improving ecosystems. She conducts her research under open science standards and has contributed to the development of online resources for reproducible research, including the publication of guides, datasets, and code related to statistical modeling and data processing using artificial intelligence. Juliana earned her Ph.D. in Conservation Sciences from the University of Minnesota.

Mytilee Vemuri
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, with clinical and research interests in hormonal influences on women’s mental and cognitive health. After Psychiatry residency I completed a NIMH research fellowship studying gender differences in metabolic complications such as dyslipidemia, obesity, and insulin-resistance in patients with bipolar disorder. As a research fellow, I also provided clinical oversight for research participants in studies evaluating hormonal change, metabolic biomarkers and mood. More recently, I have collaborated with PI Duncan and her research group on projects studying relationships between sex hormones and mood/anxiety disorders, particularly in peri-menopausal women. From these experiences I have gained experience in conducting clinical research and collaborating in interdisciplinary research teams. I have also had over 20 years of clinical experience as an attending psychiatrist in Stanford Women’s Wellness psychiatry, general psychiatry and primary care clinics treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions including perimenopausal and geriatric mood disorders. I have published review articles detailing the evidence-basis for treating mood disorders in women during times of hormonal change, and the role of hormones as potential treatments. I also serve as the Stanford Psychiatry Department’s clinical quality improvement leader, where I oversee multiple interdisciplinary improvement teams charged with improving the quality and efficiency of care processes. I currently specialize in managing perimenopausal mood disorders and have an interest in the judicious use of menopausal hormone therapy as an adjunctive treatment for mood symptoms in this population. My clinical and research experience in the intersection of women’s mental health, sex-steroid hormones, and the perimenopause, along with broad experience working on cross-disciplinary teams, will bring valuable input to this research team.

BioLuca Vendraminelli is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Digital Economy Lab and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI) at Stanford University. He is also a research affiliate at the Center for Work, Technology & Organization (WTO) in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, and at the Data Science and AI Operations Lab in the Digital Data Design Institute at Harvard.
Within the context of large organizations, his research examines how AI transforms job tasks, expertise, and, more broadly, organizational design and the division of labor. He also investigates investments into AI and why AI projects fail, focusing on how the interplay between internal organizational factors and vendor strategies may be roadblocks at various stages of the technology innovation lifecycle.
His work has appeared in scientific journals such as the Journal of Product Innovation Management. He was awarded the 2020 Albert Page Award for Outstanding Professional Contribution. -

Ross Daniel Venook
Senior Lecturer of Bioengineering
BioRoss is a Senior Lecturer in the Bioengineering department and he is the Associate Director for Engineering at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign.
Ross primarily co-leads undergraduate laboratory courses at Stanford—an instrumentation lab (BIOE123) and an open-ended capstone design lab sequence (BIOE141A/B)—and he supports other courses and runs hands-on workshops in the areas of prototyping and systems engineering related to medical device innovation. He enjoys the unique challenges and constraints offered by biomedical engineering projects, and he delights in the opportunity for collaborative learning in a problem-solving environment.
An Electrical Engineer by training (Stanford BS, MS, PhD), Ross’ graduate work focused on building and applying new types of MRI hardware for interventional and device-related uses. Following a Biodesign Innovation fellowship, Ross helped to start the MRI safety program at Boston Scientific Neuromodulation, where he worked for 15 years to enable safe MRI access for patients with implanted medical devices--including collaboration across the MRI safety community to create and improve international standards. -

Carlos Vera

BioCarlos obtained his B.S. in Industrial Biotechnology from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. He received his PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder working with Dr. Leslie Leinwand on myosin myopathies. His dissertation focused on analyzing the effects on myosin's cross-bridge cycle from mutations associated to Hypertrophic (HCM) and Dilated (DCM) cardiomyopathies. For his postdoc he will focus on disease mechanisms that can influence severity.

Daniel Verdi

Research Assistant, Environmental Social SciencesBioMy research centers on science of science, human-centered AI, and social media, applying computational methods to explore how AI and scientific knowledge are evaluated, communicated, and governed. Methodologically, my main tools are large-scale data, natural language processing, and network science.
I’m currently interested in three interconnected themes: how AI and digital technologies are changing research practices; how science is developed and shared across scientific fields and regions; and how AI is impacting society more broadly.
Beyond conducting research, I am also passionate about designing tools and events to put science in conversation with communities and create opportunities for marginalized students to engage with research and technology. I’m especially curious about implementing ways to improve digital and AI literacies, as well as how to use AI and other technologies in informal education.
Before Stanford, I graduated from the University of Richmond as a Richmond Scholar, the institution's most prestigious merit scholarship. I have conducted research at universities such as Carnegie Mellon, USC, and University of Copenhagen, and interned at Amazon Alexa AI. I’m also proud to have co-founded one of Brazil's largest high school science fairs, the Brazilian Fair of Young Scientists (FBJC), which has engaged over 2,000 participants and received over 1M website visits.
