Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMechanism of allograft rejection for the heart and, lung; late chronic effects of rejection, such as graft coronary, atherosclerosis in the heart and bronchiolitis obliterans in the, lung; treatment of rejection, including pharmacologic agents, total, lymphoid irradiation, and the induction of tolerance in fetal, animals; clinical studies include the results of lung and heart-lung, transplantation, modification of immunosuppressive protocols, and, factors contributing to late chronic rejection.

Shaun P. Setty
Clinical Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Setty is Surgical Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Director of Global Cardiac Care, and a member of the pediatric cardiac surgery team. Dr. Setty completed his general surgery residency at Oregon Health Sciences University and spent an infolded year during his training at Green Lane Hospital in New Zealand as a research and pediatric/ adult cardiac surgery fellow. He then spent 3 years at the University of Minnesota/ Lillehei Heart Institute, the birthplace of cardiac surgery, completing his cardiothoracic surgery training. He performed his congenital heart surgery fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Setty is triple-board-certified in surgery, thoracic surgery, & congenital heart surgery. He has past experience in all aspects of pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery including neonatal and transplant surgery. He is a member of the medical school honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Setty also has numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and research presentations to his credit.
His current research focus includes: cardiac surgery outcomes with genetic syndromes, social determinants of health and its effect on cardiac surgery outcomes, big data in international cardiac surgery humanitarian centers, and the epigenetic delineation of congenital heart disease. -
Joseph Shrager
Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsIn clinical research, Dr. Shrager studies outcomes in a variety of areas within Thoracic Surgery including: parenchyma-sparing operations and minimally invasive resections for lung cancer, transcervical thymectomy for myasthenia gravis, diaphragm plication, and surgical treatment of emphysema.
Dr. Shrager's lab is focused on the impact of disease states upon the diaphragm. His group published the seminal paper (NEJM) describing diaphragm atrophy assoc'd with mechanical ventilation. -
Yasuhiro Shudo, MD, PhD
Clinical Associate Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Shudo is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon and clinical associate professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
His clinical focus is the surgical treatment of end-stage cardiopulmonary failure, including heart transplant, heart-lung transplant, lung transplant, mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). He has published numerous landmark papers
and chapters.
Dr. Shudo also performs mitral valve repair/replacement (MVR), aortic valve replacement (AVR), complex valve surgery, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, reoperative cardiac surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Lillian L. Tsai, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Lillian L. Tsai is a fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon with Stanford Health Care. She is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Division of Thoracic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Tsai specializes in thoracic surgery, providing all aspects of care from diagnosis through recovery. She has expertise in treating complex thoracic diseases with robotics and minimally invasive techniques, which often increase precision, reduce risk, and improve recovery. She is dedicated to delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care that combines technical excellence with compassion.
As a physician-researcher, Dr. Tsai has completed a dedicated, grant-funded research fellowship in thoracic surgery during her general surgery training. Her research portfolio spans basic and translational science and clinical outcomes, as well as clinical trials. Her current research focuses on using artificial intelligence to improve diagnosis, surgical planning, and outcomes in thoracic surgery.
Dr. Tsai has published in many renowned peer-reviewed journals, including Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Annals of Surgery, and Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. She has also shared her expertise and research at conferences across the country, such as the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.
Dr. Tsai is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. -
