Ahmer Irfan, MD

BioDr. Ahmer Irfan is a board-certified, fellowship-trained hepatobiliary surgeon with Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Irfan cares for cancer affecting the liver, pancreas, biliary system, and gastrointestinal system, often treating complex and advanced cancers. He specializes in performing minimally invasive surgery to remove cancer using laparoscopic, robotic, and ablative techniques. He takes a compassionate approach to cancer care, working with patients and families to develop personalized treatment plans that align with their goals.
Dr. Irfan’s research focuses on improving outcomes for patients with liver, pancreatic, and gastrointestinal cancers through advances in surgical care. His work has explored how surgeons make treatment decisions and how health care systems can optimize patient support throughout the cancer journey. He has also studied the use of advanced surgical techniques, including robotic surgery and vascular reconstruction, to treat complex cancers safely.
Dr. Irfan has published his findings in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the International Journal of Cancer, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, and HPB. He has also shared his research and expertise at prestigious surgical meetings of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA), International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA), and Pancreas Club. His presentation topics have focused on innovations in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery, complex cancer care, and surgical education.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Jeffrey led the multidisciplinary team from the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Genome Technology Center that invented the MagSweeper, an automated device that immunomagnetically captures live circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patient blood for single cell analysis or culture. Her lab also works on microfluidic technologies for tumor cell capture, characterization, and growth - with the goal of defining individual patient response to newer biologically-based cancer therapies.
