Christian V. Mejia
Lecturer
BioChristian Mejia (he/they) believes that light has the ability to transport us to a moment in time and cradle us within a particular place. Light affects our mood, informs our emotional landscape, and enhances the everyday moments that make up our lives. The right light can tell a story that goes beyond words.
Christian’s approach to design seeks to create environments that ask people to lean into and learn something about our shared humanity. His design practice includes live performance, architectural lighting, and immersive entertainment. His work has been seen on stages and in built environments around the world. Some of his most cherished theatrical collaborations include the Geffen Playhouse (Los Angeles), Fountain Theatre (Los Angeles), Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland), ACT (San Francisco), and New Conservatory Theatre Center (San Francisco). His architectural lighting design practice has included work with Universal Creative, Lincoln Center NYC, and global Soho House properties.

Luis Mejia
Senior Licensing Manager, Physical Sciences, Office of Technology Licensing (OTL)
BioLuis has been a technology transfer professional at Stanford for over 30 years. He is a volunteer for Climate Donor, Inc. a non-profit that helps fund climate change and species extinction mitigation projects. Prior to joining Stanford he worked on solar energy systems and energy management at Honeywell and Pacific Gas & Electric. He has a degree in Energy Systems Engineering from Arizona State University, is a Fellow of the Disruptor Foundation and is a recipient of an award for Excellence in Technology Transfer from the Department of Energy, Federal Laboratory Consortium.

Javier Mejia
Postdoctoral Scholar, Political Science
BioJavier Mejia is an economist whose work focuses on the intersection between social networks and economic history. His interests extend to topics on entrepreneurship and political economy with a geographical specialty in Latin America and the Middle East. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from Los Andes University. He has been a Postdoctoral Associate and Lecturer at New York University--Abu Dhabi and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Bordeaux.
Most of Javier’s research explores how social interactions have shaped the economy in the long term. He brings together theoretical and empirical methods from economics and conceptual tools from anthropology to the study of history. This has led him to explore an extensive set of historical objects. He has studied entrepreneurs in Colombia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, industrial elites in Morocco in the late 20th century, tribal societies in North Africa in the 19th century, early Muslim communities in the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula between the 7th and 9th centuries, and political elites in Colombia and the US in the early 19th century.
Javier has teaching experience in multicultural environments, having taught at universities in Latin America, the United States, and the Middle East. He has taught courses on economic growth, economic history, and economic theory. At Stanford, he offers two courses that jointly provide an overview of economic evolution from a global-history and moral-philosophy perspective. On the one hand, Wealth of Nations studies the origins of economic development, the moral dilemmas underneath the development process, and the path that led to the configuration of the modern global economy. On the other hand, Societal Collapse studies the causes of economic decline, the social and political consequences of that decline, and the path that led to the disappearance of some of the most prosperous societies in human history.
Javier is a regular contributor to different news outlets. Currently, he is a Forbes Magazine op-ed columnist. -
Bethlehem Mekonnen, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology
BioDr. Mekonnen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Mekonnen diagnoses and treats a wide range of eye conditions, including cataracts, corneal and external eye diseases. She creates an individual, comprehensive care plan for each of her patients.
Dr. Mekonnen’s clinical research interests include exploring the most effective medical and surgical therapies for patients with corneal and external eye diseases. She has researched and published on outcomes of macular edema, described a novel surgical technique for severe ocular surface disease and described a possible new ophthalmic manifestation of a rare congenital disorder called Cobb syndrome.
Dr. Mekonnen has published work in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea: The Journal of Cornea and External Disease, and the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection. She has presented to her peers at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Summer Symposium, and the Annual GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Conference.
Dr. Mekonnen is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. -
Celeste Melamed
Postdoctoral Scholar, Materials Science and Engineering
BioCeleste Melamed is a postdoctoral scholar with the Chueh group at Stanford. Her interests include ionics, structural chemistry and transport, and materials by design, with the overarching goal of a sustainable energy economy. She is currently developing thin film synthetic methods to investigate interfacial structure and evolution in solid-state battery materials. She received her PhD in Materials Science at Colorado School of Mines and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in 2021, where she investigated the interplay between local and long-range structure in new ternary nitrides for optoelectronic applications. She received a B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in 2015.

Mads Melbye
Visiting Professor, Pediatrics - Neonatal and Developmental Medicine
BioMads Melbye, MD, DMSc, is visiting Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is also Director of the Danish Cancer Institute (DCI), Research Director at the Danish Cancer Society in Denmark, and Professor in Medical Epidemiology at Copenhagen University in Denmark. From 2016-2020 he was President and CEO at Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark. Previous positions at e.g. the National Cancer Institute, NIH, USA, before he became State Epidemiologist in Denmark, and later Head of Department of Epidemiology Research, and Division Director of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance, Statens Serum Institut. Previous academic positions as Danish Research Council Professor, NORFA professor, and Foreign Adjunct Professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He has written more than 700 publications (H-index: 108/132 (Web of Science/Google scholar) and is the Dane with most papers in high impact journals in general medicine (NEJM, Lancet, JAMA). He is among the worlds top 2% of scientists as listed in the AD Scientific Index 2023. He is knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and has recieved e.g. the Novo Nordisk Prize, the large Erhoff Prize, and the Anders Jahre Prize (young researchers), Oslos, Norway. He is e.g. chairman of the scientific committee at the Danish Health Insurance Fund, member of the scientific advisory board for Oslo University Hospital, member of the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation (medicine), and board member of the Norwegian Cancer Registry. Has previously served as e.g. chairman of the Governing Council, WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, chairman of the Nordic Medical Research Council’s coordinating body (NOS-M), vice-chairman of the Danish Medical Research Council, chairman of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation's committee on Registry Research (KOR), chairman of the Scientific Council, IARC, Lyon, France, and member of the Novo Nordisk Prize Committee. Together with Professor Stephen Quake he founded Mirvie Inc. in 2018, a biotech company that creates precise, actionable, and non-invasive tests for maternal-fetal health.
