Spencer Gessner
Assistant Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics
BioDr. Spencer Gessner is an Assistant Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University. Dr. Gessner was previously a Staff Scientist at SLAC researching plasma wakefield acceleration at FACET-II, and a Fellow at CERN on the AWAKE proton beam-driven plasma acceleration experiment. Dr. Gessner earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University studying the acceleration of positron beams in plasma. Dr. Gessner is currently coordinating the US 10 TeV Wakefield Collider Design Study and is broadly involved in research on future colliders from Higgs Factories to future Energy Frontier machines.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur medical education research group is developing and validating the best educational practices to train competent, compassionate, and ethical physicians and physician-scientists. We are studying the use of standardized patients and other modalities to improve clinical skill training and reasoning. We are interested in applying the rigor of clinical investigation to education research.
My areas of clinical interest in endocrinology include disorders of the pituitary, thyroid, and gonad. -

BioDr. Ghanouni is a board-certified, fellowship-trained diagnostic radiologist with Stanford Health Care Radiology. He is an associate professor in the Department of Radiology, Division of Body MRI at Stanford University School of Medicine, and by courtesy, of Urology, of Neurosurgery, and of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Ghanouni is the director of the Stanford Health Care Minimally Invasive MR Interventional Center (MIMRIC) and the Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence. He is also chief of the Division of Body MRI at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ghanouni is recognized around the world for his extensive expertise in using advanced imaging to diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of conditions and disorders. As a renowned leader in diagnostic and MRI-guided interventional radiology, Dr. Ghanouni creates a customized care plan for each of his patients.
Dr. Ghanouni’s research interests include the latest advances in MR-guided focused ultrasound techniques to treat essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, prostate cancer, bone tumors, desmoid tumors, and uterine fibroids. An experienced physician-scientist, Dr. Ghanouni has collaboratively led clinical trials and research initiatives that explore treatments for epilepsy, pancreatic cancer, and several types of tumors. Through these clinical trials, Dr. Ghanouni has helped secure FDA approval for many MR-guided focused ultrasound treatments.
His articles have been published in dozens of peer-reviewed medical journals, including Lancet Oncology, Neurology, Investigative Radiology, European Radiology, Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Journal of Neurosurgery, New England Journal of Medicine, and Radiology. Dr. Ghanouni has been invited to speak at conferences and symposiums all over the nation and the world, including in Rome, Italy; Tel Aviv, Israel; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is widely regarded for his groundbreaking research as well as his clinical expertise.
Dr. Ghanouni is a member of several professional organizations, including the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound, and the European Focused Ultrasound Society.

Research Asst-Graduate-Hourly, Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability - Dean's OfficeBioRwaida is a PhD student in Environment and Resources at Stanford’s School of Sustainability. Her research focuses on the international policy frameworks shaping climate adaptation and mobility, with an emphasis on environmental justice for displaced communities, rural populations, and women and girls. She examines how global institutions respond to climate vulnerability—and how they can better support frontline communities.
Her current work spans climate displacement and adaptation efforts in the Global South, grounded in field research across East Africa and Central America, but also here at home in California where she researches the social impacts of wildfire recovery. She examines how narrative structures, legal categorization, and financial allocations can influence how climate risks and resilience are interpreted within policy and institutional settings.
She brings over 15 years of experience in international development and humanitarian policy, including advisory roles with the World Bank Group, USAID, and UNDP, and an appointment in the Obama Administration, where she helped design the White House’ clean energy initiative, Power Africa. Currently, she is the Climate and Environmental Fellow for the Center for Just Environmental Futures, a King Center Global Development Scholar, and has supported adaptation finance research at Stanford's Sustainable Finance Institute as well as the Graduate School of Business’s Ecopreneurship Program. -
Zahra Ghazi-Askar

Clinical Associate Professor, PediatricsBioDr. Ghazi-Askar is Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and, by courtesy, of Pediatrics and serves as the Director of Pediatric Ultrasound Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine . As an academic clinical educator in with expertise in pediatric and adult point-of-care ultrasound, Dr. Ghazi-Askar's clinical focus is on children and young adults who seek care in the pediatric emergency department. She is specialty-board certified in pediatric emergency medicine.
At a national level, Dr. Ghazi-Askar is the Chair of Point-of-Care Ultrasound subcommittee for the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD), where she is leading the development of an educational curriculum for pediatric residency point-of-care ultrasound.
Dr. Ghazi-Askar also has expertise in the field of Tele-ultrasound, where she is able to teach point-of-care ultrasound virtually where clinical expertise may otherwise not be available. Here she is able to provide education and health equity when it is most needed. -
Zaniar Ghazizadeh

Fellow in Medicine - Med/Cardiovascular MedicineBioZaniar is currently a fellow in Clinical Electrophysiology program at Stanford. He completed his Internal Medicine training at Yale School of Medicine and Cardiology fellowship at Stanford. He received his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and spent a few years as a post-doctoral fellow at Weill Cornell Medicine and Brigham and Women’s Hospital before his residency. His research interest lies in the development of in vitro and in vivo platforms for studying heart regeneration and precision medicine. Zaniar’s work is focused on identifying the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias using several experimental systems ranging from genetically engineered animal models to human pluripotent stem cell derived cardiac cell types. His ultimate goal as a clinician-scientist is to utilize this framework for drug discovery and identifying new therapeutic strategies that can prevent or reverse specific arrhythmias.

Talayeh Ghezelayagh
Instructor, Obstetrics & Gynecology - Gynecologic Oncology
BioTalayeh Ghezelayagh, M.D., M.P.H, is an Instructor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of San Francisco, CA School of Medicine and earned a master’s in public health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She then completed residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Washington.
Dr. Ghezelayagh’s research focuses on improving cancer risk predictions and health outcomes in patients at increased familial or genetic risk of gynecologic cancers. She is a clinically active gynecologic oncologist but spends much of her clinical work counseling and treating patients at higher risk for developing gynecologic cancers. -

Through the utilization of customizable hydrogels that incorporate cell-adhesive sequences, our primary objective is to mimic the native microenvironment of the nervous system within 3D systems, allowing us to discern the intricate responses of cells on engineered and functional bio-interfaces. My work is driven by dual-core objectives. Firstly, I am committed to enhancing the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries by devising a therapeutic approach that is both efficient and effective. Secondly, I am involved in investigating the complex interactions between brain cancer cells and neuronal cells in precisely defined microenvironments.
