Chad O. Coates advises undergraduate students on issues related to academic planning, exploring interests, identifying goals, assessing academic progress, connecting with faculty, finding opportunities for research and service, navigating university requirements and policies, and other aspects of students' academic endeavors. Prior joining the Stanford Academic Advising team, Chad served as Associate Dean of Students / Dean of First Year Students at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and Assistant Dean of Admissions and Advising in College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University. As part of his civic engagement Chad served as a voting member of the Cornell University Board of Trustees, as well as the Tompkins Cortland Community College Board of Trustees.

During his academic career, Chad studied abroad in England, the Czech Republic, France, and Burkina Faso, conducted his dissertation research in Jamaica, where he was born and raised, and presented at academic conferences in Bulgaria, and Puerto Rico. Chad enjoys laughing, taking time out to reflect, watching cartoons (#Bob’s Burgers, #Thundercats, #Archer, #Animaniacs), hiking, biking, and dragon boat racing. He is an enthusiastic international traveler, having visited over 40 countries.
