Chad O. Coates joined VPGE as the Associate Director of the EDGE Doctoral Fellowship Program, providing support for PhD students from diverse backgrounds across the schools of business, education, engineering, humanities and sciences, and sustainability. Prior to joining VPGE, Chad served as Undergraduate Advising Director (UAD) in the office of the vice provost for undergraduate education (VPUE) at Stanford. Throughout his career he served as Associate Dean of Students and Dean of First Year Students at Bowdoin College, Assistant Dean of Admissions and Academic Advising in the College of Arts and Sciences and Coordinator of Mellon Mays Undergraduate Program (MMUF) at Cornell University.

Chad earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Bowling Green State University, and his MBA from Long Island University. During his academic career, Chad studied in England, the Czech Republic, France, and Burkina Faso, and gave scholarly presentations in Puerto Rico, Bulgaria, and China. Chad enjoys hiking, dragonboat racing, listening to Latin music, and attending live theatre performances. Chad is an enthusiastic international traveler, having visited over 40 countries.
