Current Research and Scholarly Interests
Research
Numerical simulation of flow, transport, and fluid-structure interactions in multiscale porous media.
Areas of ongoing activity: (1) modeling and simulation of unstable miscible and immiscible fluid flow in heterogeneous porous media, (2) development of multiscale numerical solution algorithms for coupled mechanics and multiphase fluid flow in large-scale subsurface formations, and (3) development of stochastic numerical methods that quantify the uncertainty associated with predictions of nonlinear fluid-structure dynamics in heterogeneous porous media.
The application areas include reservoir simulation and subsurface CO2 sequestration at scale. An area of growing interest is modeling and high-fidelity numerical simulation of species transport and fluid-structure interactions in the next-generation of Lithium-ion batteries.
Teaching
I teach courses on multiphase flow in porous media and numerical reservoir simulation.

Physics-informed machine learning: case studies for weather and climate modelling.
Philosophical transactions. Series A, Mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences
2021; 379 (2194): 20200093
Abstract
Machine learning (ML) provides novel and powerful ways of accurately and efficiently recognizing complex patterns, emulating nonlinear dynamics, and predicting the spatio-temporal evolution of weather and climate processes. Off-the-shelf ML models, however, do not necessarily obey the fundamental governing laws of physical systems, nor do they generalize well to scenarios on which they have not been trained. We survey systematic approaches to incorporating physics and domain knowledge into ML models and distill these approaches into broad categories. Through 10 case studies, we show how these approaches have been used successfully for emulating, downscaling, and forecasting weather and climate processes. The accomplishments of these studies include greater physical consistency, reduced training time, improved data efficiency, and better generalization. Finally, we synthesize the lessons learned and identify scientific, diagnostic, computational, and resource challenges for developing truly robust and reliable physics-informed ML models for weather and climate processes. This article is part of the theme issue 'Machine learning for weather and climate modelling'.

Wettability and capillary effects: Dynamics of pinch-off in unconstricted straight capillary tubes.
Physical review. E
2020; 102 (2-1): 023109
Abstract
We study the interfacial evolution of immiscible two-phase flow within a capillary tube in the partial wetting regime using direct numerical simulation. We investigate the flow patterns resulting from the displacement of a more viscous fluid by a less viscous one under a wide range of wettability conditions. We find that beyond a wettability dependent critical capillary number, a uniform displacement by a less viscous fluid can transition into a growing finger that eventually breaks up into discrete blobs by a series of pinch-off events for both wetting and nonwetting contact angles. This study validates previous experimental observations of pinch-off for wetting contact angles and extends those to nonwetting contact angles. We find that the blob length increases with the capillary number. We observe that the time between consecutive pinch-off events decreases with the capillary number and is greater for more wetting conditions in the displaced phase. We further show that the blob separation distance as a function of the difference between the inlet velocity and the contact line speed collapses into two monotonically decreasing curves for wetting and nonwetting contact angles. For the phase separation in the form of pinch-off, this work provides a quantitative study of the emerging length and timescales and their dependence on the wettability conditions, capillary effects, and viscous forces.

Pore-scale study of water salinity effect on thin-film stability for a moving oil droplet.
Journal of colloid and interface science
2020; 569: 366–77
Abstract
The interfacial dynamics in natural porous media are affected not only by the interplay between viscous and capillary forces but also the solid surface wettability. It has been hypothesized that the wettability alteration induced by changes in the water salinity is primarily caused by electric double-layer force expansion, which strongly affects the multiphase flow dynamics. We investigate the effect of water ionic composition and surface roughness on pore-scale wettability alteration. Multiphase hydrodynamics is numerically captured by a lubrication approximation describing the evolution of thin-films coupled with a multiscale level-set approach. An oil blob mobilized by water within a single pore is considered as a case study. The effect of brine ionic composition is accounted for by an electric double-layer through the water ionic strength and zeta-potential parameters. We demonstrate that high-salinity water thin-films collapse to an adsorbed nanometer layer, leading to a large pressure drop during mobilization of the blob induced by the attractive surface forces. However, low-salinity water thin-films are stable due to the repulsive electric double-layer forces, leading to less pressure drop during mobilization of the blob. The novelty of this work lies in efficiently capturing the nanoscale effects of the electric double-layer in pore-scale multiphase flow displacements. Our quantitative investigations provide fundamental insights into the efficiency of low-salinity waterflooding.

Measurements and simulation of liquid films during drainage displacements and snap-off in constricted capillary tubes
JOURNAL OF COLLOID AND INTERFACE SCIENCE
2017; 507: 279–89
Abstract
When a wetting liquid is displaced by air in a capillary tube, a wetting film develops between the tube wall and the air that is responsible for the snap-off mechanism of the gas phase. By dissolving a dye in the wetting phase it is possible to relate a measure of the absorbance in the capillary to the thickness of liquid films. These data could be used to compare with cutting edge numerical simulations of the dynamics of snap-off for which experimental and numerical data are lacking. Drainage experiments in constricted capillary tubes were performed where a dyed wetting liquid is displaced by air for varying flow rates. We developed an optical method to measure liquid film thicknesses that range from 3 to 1000μm. The optical measures are validated by comparison with both theory and direct numerical simulations. In a constricted capillary tube we observed, both experimentally and numerically, a phenomenon of snap-off coalescence events in the vicinity of the constriction that bring new insights into our understanding and modeling of two-phase flows. In addition, the good agreement between experiments and numerical simulations gives confidence to use the numerical method for more complex geometries in the future.

Forced imbibition in natural porous media: Comparison between experiments and continuum models
PHYSICAL REVIEW E
2007; 75 (3)
Abstract
A well-characterized set of large-scale laboratory experiments is presented, illustrating forced imbibition displacements in the presence of irreducible wetting phase saturation in a cylindrical, homogeneous Berea sandstone rock. Experiments are designed to operate in the regime of compact microscopic flows and large-scale viscous instability. The distribution of fluid phases during the flow process is visualized by high-resolution computed tomography imaging. Linear stability analysis and high-accuracy numerical simulations are employed to analyze the ability of macroscopic continuum equations to provide a consistent approximation of the displacement process. The validity of the equilibrium relative permeability functions, which form the basis for the continuum model, is fundamentally related to the stability of the displacement process. It is shown that not only is the stable flow regime modeled accurately by existing continuum models, but the onset of instability as well as the initial unstable modes are also determined with reasonable accuracy for unstable flows. However, the continuum model is found to be deficient in the case of fully developed unstable flows.
