Bio

Jeff Wade's engineering and computer science education along with decades of experience makes him an expert in his field. He manages network, security, servers, coding, switches, programming and clusters for select faculty, staff and groups with the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC).

Jeff works with Principal Investigator of the Gemini Planet Imager, Bruce Macintosh. By setting up computers to talk to and retrieve data from the Chilean Andes through the Stanford network. Jeff maintains those servers and keeps backup/patches on the system for security issues.

Stanford Solar Observatories Group - Jeff also works with select faculty at Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory. He supports the fiber link between NASA White Sands NM and Stanford.

Jeff set up a network link between PAB and ESIII so that servers could failover if one of the buildings experience a catastrophe such as power outages, flooding, heat problems etc.. The servers are redundant and the data is protected for those faculty he supports.

Gravity Probe B Science Net – Jeff maintains and keeps the 20 yr old computer systems relevant and set up a redundant scibase server for the Senior Scientist Mac Keiser and Prof. John Turneaure (Co-Principal Investigator). The purpose is to keep the database of the flight data (from the spacecraft) accessible and available for ongoing research.

Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) – Jeff maintains the Physics Dept. Chair, Peter Michelson’s, Fermi LAT. He also maintains the Fermi cluster in ESIII. He enhanced performance by his placement of 10G switches in-between PAB and ESIII. The purpose is to collect data at Stanford from SLAC for NASA and collaborators around the world to analyze.

LIGO - Jeff is building a simulator for Dr Brian Lantz, who leads the research at the Engineering Test Facility for LIGO at Stanford.

Jeff is usually on campus working after hours on specialized projects to help faculty (and staff) in areas within and outside of his engineering/computer science role.

Previously, Jeff designed the network for GP-B that interfaced with NASA. Basically a NASA network on Stanford campus. This network was designed for security and was maintained and monitored by Jeff. When the mission became a flight program he was part of the MOC (Mission Operation Center) here at Stanford. Jeff created the non-fail network, then set up the systems used to collect the spacecraft data. Eventually he flew the spacecraft from campus for five years and also trained Air Force cadets to fly the GP-B satellite at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.

Current Role at Stanford

Network and Security Manager for Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology or KIPAC. Responsible for network, security, servers, switches and clusters for select faculty, with KIPAC, LIGO, Fermi, Gemini Planet Imager, and HEPL.
