Bio


I joined Stanford in 1988 following 11 years of work in communications industry (COMSAT Laboratories) and petroleum industry (Exxon and Sohio/BP). I was Geophysics department chair from 2000 to 2005 and now serve as Associate Dean for the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA). I was the Founding Director of the Stanford Center for Computational Earth and Environmental Science (CEES). I am the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Geophysics.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests


Biographical Information
I am the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Geophysics. I co-authored the proposal that lead to the formation of GCEP, the Global Climate and Energy Project. I founded (served as Director for 8 years) the Stanford Center for Computational Earth and Environmental Science (CEES). I am now Associate Dean for the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA), home for an initiative focused on fostering partnerships with other universities (international and domestic) and building a more diverse population of students in the School.

Research
My research interests address a range of problems related to the physics and dynamics of seismic and electromagnetic waves in complex media. My approach to these problems includes theory, numerical simulation, laboratory methods, and the analysis of field data. My group, collectively known as the Stanford Wave Physics Laboratory, specializes on high frequency borehole methods and low frequency labratory methods. We apply this research to the characterization and monitoring of petroleum and CO2 storage reservoirs.

Teaching
I teach courses on waves phenomena for borehole geophysics and tomography. I recently introduced and co-taught a new course on computational geosciences.

Professional Activities
I serve as the founding director of the Stanford Center for Computational Earth and Environmental Science, a multi-disciplinary computational initiative hosted by the School of Earth Sciences. I was the First Vice President of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 2003-04, and have served as the Distinguished Lecturer for the SPE, SEG, and AAPG.

    Abstract

    Electroacoustic (E-A) logging describes the acoustic response to an electromagnetic (EM) source in a fluid-filled borehole surrounded by a porous medium. The E-A response is simulated by two different methods in this paper. In the coupled method, the EM field and the acoustic field are modeled using Pride's model, which couples Maxwell's equations and Biot's equations. In the uncoupled method, the EM field is uninfluenced by the converted acoustic field, resulting in separate acoustic formulation with an electrokinetic source term derived from the primary EM field. The difference of the transient full waveforms between the above two methods is remarkably small for all examples, thus confirming the validity of using the computationally simpler uncoupled method. It is shown from the simulated waveforms that an EM-accompanying acoustic field is coupled to the EM field and appears with an apparent phase velocity of the EM wave in the formation. Acoustic waves with the conventional acoustic velocities are also seen in the converted full waveforms. For the sandstone models used in this paper, when permeability is less than 1 Darcy, the E-A Stoneley wave amplitude increases with porosity, which is different from that in conventional acoustic-to-acoustic logging.
