Bio
José Rubio-Zepeda is an Assistant Director for Inclusion and Belonging within the Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford University. He is an urban planner by training and a scholar-practitioner.
José’s recent academic and professional interests focuses on the academic and financial retention of minoritized students in higher education from the undergraduate and graduate levels. This also includes support for postdoctoral training. His interests spans the experiences of marginalized groups with topics related to migration, human rights, transnationalism, globalization and the various intersections of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. Previously, he researched and wrote about the lives of Dominican and Haitian migrants on the island of Hispaniola. His interests also centers the African Diaspora in Central America along with Latinx/e communities in the U.S.
He has worked both internationally, regionally, and locally in the areas of migration advocacy, citizenship, community development and engagement, coalition building, and participatory planning. Central to his work are topics related to social equity, justice, access, diversity, inclusion, belonging and community engagement and outreach.
When not immersed in advocacy, writing, or research, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, running, dancing, yoga, listening to music, cooking, and planning his next travel destination.
