CUPELLA: Customer Premises Equipment for Low-Power and Low-Cost Architectures, Stanford University, Alcatel-Lucent
The customer premises equipment (CPE) provides connectivity between the access network and the home network. In the current wireline network architectures, the CPE consumes more power per user than any other element in the network. Considering the large number of users, CPE is an important contributor to the overall carbon footprint and hence it should be designed with energy efficiency in mind. In this project, we will investigate several CPE architectures (passive/quasi-passive) along with several wireless home network architectures to find the best possible combination that minimizes the end to end energy consumption. In addition, the CPE to be designed shall have the capability to route the traffic between the cells in the wireless home network without sending that traffic to the central office.

QPAR: Quasi-Passive Reconfigurable Optical Devices, Systems, and Networks, Center For Integrated Systems, Stanford University
Recent developments in optical and wireless networks bring the prospects of higher bandwidth, ubiquitous access and a wide range of new applications to millions of users. The design of next generation networks should also address principles of flexibility, scalability, cost-effectiveness, and environment-friendliness. Toward this important goal, this project investigates the potential and the applications of novel devices and systems based on latchable Micro and Nano/Electro-Mechanical Systems (N/MEMS) technology, non-volatile ion-migration systems, and their integration in standard electronics through silicon photonics in addition to uncooled Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) in plane circuits. All these devices are aimed to enable greater intelligence and flexibility in the networking tasks for future services. This collaboration will also impact a wide range of architectural concepts, from interconnects to access networks. The key aspect is that QPAR seeks extremely energy efficient approaches in order to radically change the concepts of power usage in networks. This project is the result of a cooperation between two leading Universities and the Principal Investigators (PI) have substantial, and complementary, experience in designing state-of-the-art photonic devices and in developing next-generation networks.
The outcome of QPAR will cause significant industry repercussion as it will bring together intelligence and energy efficiency into future networks and is expected to present broader impacts toward the environment and the economy in several important areas. The project directly contributes to the development of the important areas of high-speed communications, computer and datacenter interconnection, and broadband access networks. Those segments represent an important part of the U.S. economic, strategic, and technological edge.Location

UltraFlow: A Hybrid Future Internet Architecture, Stanford University, MIT, UT Dalla, National Science Foundation
This program proposes to investigate and experimentally demonstrate UltraFlow - a hybrid future Internet architecture that is secure, dynamic (both agile and adaptive), and significantly more cost effective for future growth in data volumes and number of users. UltraFlow relies on a novel optical network infrastructure comprising new transport mechanisms and a new comprehensive control plane including network protocols from the physical layer up to the application layer. It also integrates the foregoing new network modalities with the conventional TCP/IP network architecture and provides multiple service types to suit user needs.
The proposed UltraFlow technology will have a profound influence on the way the future Internet is designed and perceived by the society, as the new on-demand gigabit service will enable applications that are unimaginable today with existing broadband access, such as instantly-available 3D distributed virtualreality systems, cloud computing and instant file transfer services including telemedicine, education, 3D movies, concerts, sporting events, and government services. It will greatly enhance network security through its secure Control Plane and stimulate large-scale deployment by reducing operating expenses (OpEx). Hence, UltraFlow will have a huge economic and societal impact, as the access network 'touches' hundreds of millions of end-users. The project will expand the participant base of the science and engineering community through sponsoring seminars, undergraduate research opportunities, lecturer trainings, and hosting domestic as well as international scholar visits.
Ultraflow is a joint project, in which three co-PI's will form a management council and share the management of the project and an industrial advisory board from the equipment and service provider sectors.Professor Chan of MIT will lead the architecture research. Professor Fumagalli of UTD will lead the control plane research. Professor Kazovsky of Stanford will lead the access network testbed research and Dr. Kilper of Bell Laboratories will lead the long haul testbed research.Location

Accurate numerical simulation of short fiber optical parametric amplifiers
OPTICS EXPRESS
2008; 16 (6): 3610-3622
Abstract
We improve the accuracy of numerical simulations for short fiber optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs). Instead of using the usual coarse-step method, we adopt a model for birefringence and dispersion which uses fine-step variations of the parameters. We also improve the split-step Fourier method by exactly treating the nonlinear ellipse rotation terms. We find that results obtained this way for two-pump OPAs can be significantly different from those obtained by using the usual coarse-step fiber model, and/or neglecting ellipse rotation terms.

Temperature control of the gain spectrum of fiber optical parametric amplifiers
OPTICS EXPRESS
2005; 13 (12): 4666-4673
Abstract
The gain spectrum of a fiber optical parametric amplifier (OPA) can be controlled by imposing a temperature distribution along the fiber, which modulates the local fiber zero-dispersion wavelength lambda0, and hence the parametric gain coefficient. We present simulations and experimental verification for various binary temperature distributions. The method should be applicable to fibers with realistic longitudinal variations of lambda0.

Gain-clamped S-band discrete Raman amplifier
OPTICS LETTERS
2004; 29 (7): 757-759
Abstract
We demonstrate the advantages of an optically gain-clamped S-band discrete Raman amplifier: low gain variation over a large input dynamic range, effective suppression of Raman transients, and amplifier instability in the strong-pump-weak-signal configuration. We further investigate experimentally the operating conditions necessary for effective gain clamping and demonstrate gain flattening over 30 nm of bandwidth. Thus a gain-clamped discrete Raman amplifier shows promise for practical deployment.

Opposite-parity orthonormal function expansion for efficient full-vectorial modeling of holey optical fibers
OPTICS LETTERS
2003; 28 (14): 1188-1190
Abstract
An improved full-vectorial method exploiting the opposite-parity property of eigenmodes based on orthonormal-functions expansion is proposed to solve the wave equation for holey optical fibers. By use of the parity property of eigenmodes in symmetric structures, the number of orthonormal function integrals involved in the calculation is reduced, and the computation efficiency is greatly enhanced. The coupling between the two transverse field components is considered, and both dominant and minor field components can be calculated for the accurate modeling of fiber modes. This method is useful for efficiently modeling holey fibers, especially those with large air holes, in which the coupling effect that is due to refractive-index discontinuities is strong.

Continuous-wave fiber optical parametric wavelength converter with+40-dB conversion efficiency and a 3.8-dB noise figure
OPTICS LETTERS

Abstract
We have obtained 40 dB of internal (on-off) conversion gain and a sub-4-dB noise figure (NF) with a continuous-wave (cw) fiber optical parametric wavelength converter. To our knowledge, this is the lowest NF reported for any cw wavelength converter. We have also investigated the properties of NF versus signal input power and pump power.

Continuous-wave fiber optical parametric oscillator
OPTICS LETTERS
2002; 27 (16): 1439-1441
Abstract
We report continuous-wave operation of singly resonant fiber optical parametric oscillators. In a cavity formed by 100 m of highly nonlinear fiber and two fiber Bragg gratings, the pump power threshold was 240 mW; the output wavelength could be tuned over 80 nm by tuning of the pump. We also obtained an internal conversion efficiency of 30%, compared with the maximum theoretical value of 50%, by use of a 1-km-long cavity.

92% pump depletion in a continuous-wave one-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier
OPTICS LETTERS
2001; 26 (9): 620-622
Abstract
Theory shows that near-complete pump depletion can be obtained in uniform fiber-optic parametric amplifiers (OPA's) for a particular phase-matching condition. We have demonstrated 92% pump depletion in a cw fiber OPA, with a 200-mW pump at 1560 nm in an 11-km-long dispersion-shifted fiber.

Widely tunable spectrum translation and wavelength exchange by four-wave mixing in optical fibers
OPTICS LETTERS
1996; 21 (23): 1906-1908
Abstract
By a suitable choice of the wavelengths of two pumps and one signal about the zero-dispersion wavelength of a fiber, it is possible to generate mainly one four-wave-mixing product (idler) whose spectrum is a translated version of that of the signal; no spectral inversion or phase conjugation is involved. Unit conversion efficiency can in principle be obtained. Complete exchange of power between two wavelengths can be implemented. One can adjust the wavelengths of the signal and the idler at will over tens of nanometers, while maintaining high conversion efficiency, by suitably tuning the pumps. For fixed pump wavelengths, the signal bandwidth scales linearly with pump power and can reach several nanometers for pump powers of the order of several watts in silica fibers or less in highly nonlinear fibers.

Broadband fiber-optical parametric amplifiers and wavelength converters with low-ripple Chebyshev gain spectra
OPTICS LETTERS
1996; 21 (17): 1354-1356
Abstract
Theory predicts that a two-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier or wavelength converter operated near the fiber zero-dispersion wavelength can exhibit a gain spectrum approximated by a Chebyshev polynomial of order 8. Under realistic conditions of pump spacing and fiber dispersion, very low-gain ripple can be obtained over a large bandwidth. For example, a dispersion-shifted fiber can provide a signal amplifier with a gain of 20 dB with 0.2-dB uniformity over a 45-nm bandwidth. Potential limitations are discussed.

Broadband fiber optical parametric amplifiers
OPTICS LETTERS
1996; 21 (8): 573-575
Abstract
The bandwidth of a single-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier is governed by the even orders of fiber dispersion at the pump wavelength. The amplifier can exhibit gain over a wide wavelength range when operated near the fiber's zero-dispersion wavelength. It can also be used for broadband wavelength conversion, with gain. We have experimentally obtained gain of 10-18 dB as the signal wavelength was tuned over a 35-nm bandwidth near 1560 nm.

CANCELLATION OF 3RD-ORDER NONLINEAR EFFECTS IN AMPLIFIED FIBER LINKS BY DISPERSION COMPENSATION, PHASE-CONJUGATION, AND ALTERNATING DISPERSION
OPTICS LETTERS
1995; 20 (8): 863-865
Abstract
We show that in principle it is possible to cancel third-order nonlinear effects in optical fiber links. The necessary conditions exist in two-segment links, with dispersion compensation, phase conjugation, and amplification between the two, as well as opposite chromatic dispersion coefficients in the segments. The cancellation is independent of loss, modulation format, and modulation frequency.
