Matthew studied political science, history and classics at the University of Otago (2003-2006, B.A. (Hons), M.A., 2007-2008) before writing a PhD at the Free University Berlin (2009-2013) where he graduated summa cum laude. He is currently a Senior Researcher at the Department of Global Governance at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, and held Visiting Professorships at the Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg in 2018-2019 and 2021. His research focuses on international power shifts and international institutions, and has been published in journals such as the European Journal of International Relations, Global Governance, International Studies Review, and International Studies Quarterly. He is fascinated by Berlin, where he has lived since 2009.
