Bio
Pam Maples is a managing director of the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships. She brings strategy and structure to organizations, teams and careers.
Pam leads the JSK Fellowships applicant screening and selection process, with an eye toward building an inclusive process that ensures diverse candidate pools.
Pam also creates opportunities for JSK Fellows to tap into Stanford’s vast intellectual resources and manages the program’s partnerships with the Stanford Institute on Race and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. She coaches and advises fellows on career strategy as well as organizational change and cultural management.
Prior to JSK, Pam was the inaugural vice president of editorial at Newsy, the multi-perspective video news start up later acquired by E.W. Scripps Co. She previously served as managing editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and STLToday.com where she integrated digital and print news operations, introducing new reporting tools and storytelling methods. Under her leadership, the staff became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News in the first year the award expanded into digital storytelling.
Pam also worked at The Dallas Morning News where she was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting on violence against women around the world. She held several editing roles at the newspaper including national editor and assistant managing editor of investigations.
Pam maintains a deep interest in press freedom and in the future of local news. It’s where she started her journalism career as a beat reporter covering courts, local and state government and politics for newspapers in Missouri, New Mexico and Colorado. She is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. She is also part of the JSK Fellowship Class of 2006.
