Bio

Serena DeTata, BFA, is currently working as a research assistant through the Department of Surgery investigating the factors influencing airflow rates of various hospital spaces and the carbon emissions related to hospital ventilation.

She has also been a project manager for two healthcare sustainability projects funded by Stanford University grants. The first grant explored how to leverage the electronic health record to nudge clinicians towards eco-friendly patient care choices (e.g. choosing lower-emission anesthesia and telehealth visits when clinically appropriate). The second was focused on actionable steps to promote lower-emission inhaler use at Stanford and elsewhere. For both grants, she has performed secondary research, aided publication writing, organized and presented at events, planned meetings, and designed educational materials. She has also helped establish national and international working groups with specific healthcare decarbonization aims.

Outside of her research and project management work, Serena is also a dance educator. She teaches ballet to students of all ages and ability levels at dance studios throughout the Bay Area. She has also taught classes and directed a program to teach rehabilitative ballet to patients with mobility issues and chronic illness.
