Current Research and Scholarly Interests

Research
The focus of my research, with students and colleagues, has been on integrating rock physics, wave propagation physics, data sciences and machine learning, and their broad applications in remote sensing of subsurface systems and processes and subsurface uncertainty quantification. Over the years, I have been involved in the research activities of different industrial consortia - Stanford Rock Physics and Borehole Geophysics (SRB), Stanford Center for Earth Resources Forecasting (SCERF), Basin Processes and Subsurface Modeling (BPSM), Stanford Rocks and Geomaterials Project (SRGP) and Smart Fields Consortium (SFC). My research uses theoretical, computational, and statistical models, to discover and understand fundamental relations between geophysical data and reservoir properties, to quantify uncertainty in our models, and to address value of information for decision making under uncertainty. I am particularly interested in forging links between research disciplines in geosciences, engineering, and decision sciences. I believe such research links across traditional boundaries are critical for the future of energy resources research.

Teaching
My courses for advanced undergraduates and graduates introduce students to mathematical methods for modeling, data analysis, and simulation using modern high-level software. The students come not only from the School of Earth Sciences but also from engineering, and biology. I continue to co-teach graduate level courses on rock physics and practice of geostatistics and seismic data integration. With my co-authors, I have written The Rock Physics Handbook, Quantitative Seismic Interpretation, Seismic Reservoir Modeling, Quantitative Analysis of Geopressure, and Value of Information in the Earth Sciences. These books are valuable resources for students, and researchers, and have been used as course material for university and industry courses. I enjoy advising and mentoring graduate students in their research work. Of course, one of the special rewards of teaching students is that I often learn as much from them as they do from me!

    Abstract

We predict steady-state Stokes flow of fluids within porous media at pore scales using sparse point observations and a novel class of physics-informed neural networks, called "physics-informed PointNet" (PIPN). Taking the advantages of PIPN into account, three new features become available compared to physics-informed convolutional neural networks for porous medium applications. First, the input of PIPN is exclusively the pore spaces of porous media (rather than both the pore and grain spaces). This feature diminishes required computer memory. Second, PIPN represents the boundary of pore spaces smoothly and realistically (rather than pixel-wise representations). Third, spatial resolution can vary over the physical domain (rather than equally spaced resolutions). This feature enables users to reach an optimal resolution with a minimum computational cost. The performance of our framework is evaluated by the study of the influence of noisy sensor data, pressure observations, and spatial correlation length.

    Abstract

Mechanical trapping of fine particles in the pores of granular materials is an essential mechanism in a wide variety of natural and industrial filtration processes. The progress of invading particles is primarily limited by the network of pore throats and connected pathways encountered by the particles during their motion through the porous medium. Trapping of invading particles is limited to a depth defined by the size, shape, and distribution of the invading particles with respect to the size, shape, and distribution of the host porous matrix. Therefore, the trapping process, in principle, can be used to obtain information about geometrical properties, such as pore throat and particle size, of the underlying host matrix. A numerical framework is developed to simulate the mechanical trapping of fine particles in porous granular media with prescribed host particle size, shape, and distribution. The trapping of invading particles is systematically modeled in host packings with different host particle distributions: monodisperse, bidisperse, and polydisperse distributions of host particle sizes. Our simulation results show quantitatively and qualitatively to what extent trapping behavior is different in the generated monodisperse, bidisperse, and polydisperse packings of spherical particles. Depending on host particle size and distribution, the information about extreme estimates of minimal pore throat sizes of the connected pathways in the underlying host matrix can be inferred from trapping features, such as the fraction of trapped particles as a function of invading particle size. The presence of connected pathways with minimum and maximum of minimal pore throat diameters can be directly obtained from trapping features. This limited information about the extreme estimates of pore throat sizes of the connected pathways in the host granular media inferred from our numerical simulations is consistent with simple geometrical estimates of extreme value of pore and throat sizes of the densest structural arrangements of spherical particles and geometrical Delaunay tessellation analysis of the pore space of host granular media. Our results suggest simple relations between the host particle size and trapping features. These relationships can be potentially used to describe both the dynamics of the mechanical trapping process and the geometrical properties of the host granular media.
