Eric Malczewski

Eric Malczewski is a social and political theorist working in the areas of philosophy of the human sciences, sociological theory, sociology of knowledge, comparative historical sociology, and culture. He has published on the organizing principles of social science, epistemological issues in social and sociological theory, nationalism, culture, and conceptions of nature in American culture and American landscape painting. He is an expert on the thought of Max Weber, Émile Durkheim, and Ferdinand Tonnies. His current work develops the theory of human will and its major political philosophical implication -- namely, the theory of intrinsic liberty.
His work has been published in Sociological Theory, American Journal of Cultural Sociology, The Journal of Historical Sociology, The Journal of Classical Sociology, Cosmos+Taxis, Current Perspectives in Social Theory, The Turkish Journal of Sociology, The Anthem Companion to Robert K. Presently, he is a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University in The Bill Lane Center for the American West. He is a Faculty Fellow at Yale University at the Center for Cultural Sociology (with which he has been affiliated since 2014). He is a Miller Fellow at the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America's Founding Principles and History. He is an Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech, and in 2023-2024 he also was a Humanities Associate at Virginia Tech. He has served on several prize committees for the American Political Science Association and the American Sociological Association.
From 2009 to 2018 he was at Harvard University, where he was a Lecturer on Social Studies teaching social and political theory. He also served on the Board of Advisors and advised Senior honor’s theses. His primary affiliation was with Quincy House from 2009-2017. From 2013-2018 he oversaw Harvard's Visiting Undergraduate Student Program and also was affiliated with Dudley House.
He received awards at Harvard for Distinction in Teaching in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017. In 2013 he received Social Studies' highest accolade for advising – the Harvard University Barrington Moore Award for Excellence in Advising. In 2015 he was awarded the Harvard University Star Family Prize for Excellence in Advising (Harvard’s highest award for advising).

Liisa Malkki
Professor of Anthropology, Emerita
BioLiisa H. Malkki is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Stanford University. Her research interests include: the politics of nationalism, internationalism, cosmopolitanism, and human rights discourses as transnational cultural forms; the social production of historical memory and the uses of history; political violence, exile, and displacement; the ethics and politics of humanitarian aid; child research; and visual culture. Her field research in Tanzania exlored the ways in which political violence and exile may produce transformations of historical consciousness and national identity among displaced people. This project resulted in Purity and Exile: Violence, Memory, and National Cosmology Among Hutu Refugees in Tanzania (University of Chicago Press, 1995). In another project, Malkki explored how Hutu exiles from Burundi and Rwanda, who found asylum in Montreal, Canada, imagined scenarios of the future for themselves and their countries in the aftermath of genocide in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. Malkki’s most recent book, Improvising Theory: Process and Temporality in Ethnographic Fieldwork (with Allaine Cerwonka) was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2007. Her most recent book-length project (based on fieldwork from 1995 to the present) examines the changing interrelationships among humanitarian interventions, internationalism, professionalism, affect, and neutrality in the work of the Finnish Red Cross in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Salvatore Mancuso

Current Role at StanfordSal Mancuso is an experienced data engineer who joins The PRIDE Study as the LGBTQ+ Digital Health Research Data Engineer. Sal spent nearly seven years with Stanford University's Graduate School of Business (GSB), most recently leading the data engineering unit within the Data, Analytics, and Research Computing (DARC) team. The DARC team engages directly with Ph.D. students, researchers, and faculty members, preparing large-scale datasets, assisting with data analysis, and consulting research design. Before joining Stanford, Sal worked for several technology companies, including Apple Computer, Tivo (formally Rovi), and Sun Microsystems (now ORACLE), where he leveraged both his fondness for data and his passion for coding. Sal is eager to practice his data craft to elevate the adoption and impact of The PRIDE Study.

Peter Mann
Lecturer
BioPeter Mann is a writer and historian of Modern Europe. He is the author of the novel THE TORQUED MAN (Harper, 2022), about the double life of an Irish spy in wartime Berlin, and named one of The New Yorker's Best Books of 2022. His second novel WORLD PACIFIC is forthcoming from HarperCollins in August, 2025.
Mann is interested in 19th- and 20th-century literature and history, especially where they intersect with politics and the absurd. He is also a cartoonist, with work featured in The Baffler, Brick, and GoComics, and currently publishes comics on his Substack newsletter "The Quixote Syndrome."
At Stanford Mann teaches the first-year Foundations sequence of the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) program, a syllabus in literature, history, and art, with readings that span the ancient epic to the contemporary novel. Before coming to the MLA, he taught for several years in Stanford's residential freshman humanities program, Structured Liberal Education. He also regularly teaches courses in Stanford Continuing Studies, including: "Modernism in the Metropolis: Artists and Intellectuals in the European City, 1848-1945" and "Modernity and its Discontents: European Thought and Culture from Fin de Siècle to World War II." -
Christopher Manning

BioChristopher Manning is the inaugural Thomas M. Siebel Professor in Machine Learning in the Departments of Linguistics and Computer Science at Stanford University, Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), and an Associate Director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). From 2010, Manning pioneered Natural Language Understanding and Inference using Deep Learning, with impactful research on sentiment analysis, paraphrase detection, the GloVe model of word vectors, attention, neural machine translation, question answering, self-supervised model pre-training, tree-recursive neural networks, machine reasoning, dependency parsing, and summarization, work for which he has received two ACL Test of Time Awards and the IEEE John von Neumann Medal (2024). He earlier led the development of empirical, probabilistic approaches to NLP, computational linguistics, and language understanding, defining and building theories and systems for Natural Language Inference, syntactic parsing, machine translation, and multilingual language processing, work for which he won ACL, Coling, EMNLP, and CHI Best Paper Awards. In NLP education, Manning coauthored foundational textbooks on statistical approaches to NLP (Manning and Schütze 1999) and information retrieval (Manning, Raghavan, and Schütze, 2008), and his online CS224N Natural Language Processing with Deep Learning course videos have been watched by hundreds of thousands. In linguistics, Manning is a principal developer of Stanford Dependencies and Universal Dependencies, and has authored monographs on ergativity and complex predicates. He is the founder of the Stanford NLP group (@stanfordnlp) and was an early proponent of open source software in NLP with Stanford CoreNLP and Stanza. He is an ACM Fellow, a AAAI Fellow, and an ACL Fellow, and a Past President of the ACL (2015). Manning has a B.A. (Hons) from The Australian National University, a Ph.D. from Stanford in 1994, and an Honorary Doctorate from U. Amsterdam in 2023. He held faculty positions at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Sydney before returning to Stanford.

Virginia A. Marchman

Staff, PsychologyBioAs a developmental psychologist, my main areas of research are language development, language disorders, and early childhood development. I have worked extensively with parent report measures of early vocabulary, specifically, the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs). I serve on the CDI Advisory Board, and have worked on many projects including the Web-CDI, the CDI Scoring program, and Wordbank, an open repository of CDI instruments from many different languages. My current studies examine links between children's language processing skill, early learning environments, and individual differences in language development in monolingual and bilingual learners from diverse backgrounds. Our team also explores the importance of environmental stimulation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), showing that early engagement in developmental care activities (e.g., skin-to-skin care, holding, talking) has important consequences for positive neurological and behavioral outcomes. I am also involved in a large-scale NIH-funded project following infants born preterm from birth to 18 months, examining the neurodevelopmental and environmental influences on development in this at risk population. In addition to conducting studies that have a basic science focus, I have also been Director of Program Evaluation for the Habla Conmigo project, overseeing the evaluation of parenting intervention programs designed to facilitate caregiver engagement in Latina mothers and their young children.

Thomas E. Markland

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research centers on problems at the interface of quantum and statistical mechanics. Particular themes that occur frequently in our research are hydrogen bonding, the interplay between structure and dynamics, systems with multiple time and length-scales and quantum mechanical effects. The applications of our methods are diverse, ranging from chemistry to biology to geology and materials science. Particular current interests include proton and electron transfer in fuel cells and enzymatic systems, atmospheric isotope separation and the control of catalytic chemical reactivity using electric fields.
Treatment of these problems requires a range of analytic techniques as well as molecular mechanics and ab initio simulations. We are particularly interested in developing and applying methods based on the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics to include quantum fluctuations such as zero-point energy and tunneling in the dynamics of liquids and glasses. This formalism, in which a quantum mechanical particle is mapped onto a classical "ring polymer," provides an accurate and physically insightful way to calculate reaction rates, diffusion coefficients and spectra in systems containing light atoms. Our work has already provided intriguing insights in systems ranging from diffusion controlled reactions in liquids to the quantum liquid-glass transition as well as introducing methods to perform path integral calculations at near classical computational cost, expanding our ability to treat large-scale condensed phase systems. -
