Marina Bosi-Goldberg
Adjunct Professor, Music
BioMarina Bosi started her career as musician, performing and teaching at the Venice National Conservatory of Music, Italy, and spending about two years as a chargée de recherche at IRCAM, Paris, where she completed her thesis in Physics. She is currently Consulting Professor in the Music Department at Stanford University and is also a founding member and director of the Digital Media Project, a non-profit organization that promotes successful development, deployment, and use of Digital Media. Previously, Dr. Bosi was Chief Technology Officer of MPEG LA®, a firm specializing in the licensing of multimedia technology; VP-Technology, Standards and Strategies at Digital Theater Systems (DTS); was part of the research team at Dolby Laboratories that developed AC-3 (aka Dolby Digital) and where she also led the MPEG-2 AAC (the core coding technology used in Apple's iTunes, etc.) development for which she received the ISO/IEC 1997 Project Editor award; DSP Engineer at Digidesign where she designed and implemented real-time DSP modules for Sound Designer II (the precursor of Pro Tools). Dr. Bosi has been actively involved in the development of standards for audio and video coding and for managing digital content, contributing to the work of ANSI, ATSC, DVD Forum, DVB, ISO/IEC MPEG, SDMI, and SMPTE. A past President of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Dr. Bosi is a Fellow of the AES served the AES in various capacities including as a member of the Board of Governors, as VP of the Western Region USA and Canada, and as Chair of the San Francisco Section. Dr. Bosi is a member the Technical Committee on Audio and Electroacoustics of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, a senior member of IEEE, and a member of ASA.
Dr. Bosi received the AES Silver Medal Award in recognition of outstanding achievements in the development and the standardization of audio coding, video coding, and secure digital rights management. She received the AES Board of Governors Award twice: for her co-chairmanship of the 96th AES Convention and again for her co-chairmanship of the 17th AES International Conference, the first scientific international conference dedicated to the topic of high quality audio coding. She also has received several awards for her scholarship from both the French and Italian governments.
A graduate of Stanford Business School’s “Stanford Executive Program”, Marina holds several patents and publications and is author of the acclaimed textbook “Introduction to Digital Audio Coding and Standards” (Kluwer/Springer December 2002). Marina is currently Treasurer-Elect and Board member of the AES and is a member of the Scientific Council of ISSNAF. -
Sarah Chan

An international concert pianist and teacher, Sarah Chan has performed throughout America, Europe, and Asia, including at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Berlin Philharmonie, National Philharmonic of Ukraine, Salle Cortot-Paris, Künstlerhaus Munich, Sala Atenu-Bacau-Romania, Beifang Performing Arts Hall, and Ningxia Normal Concert Hall. Chan has appeared as concerto soloist with the National "Mihail Jora" Philharmonic of Romania, Romanian State Symphony, New York Concert Artists Symphony, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, and Enid Symphony Orchestra. Chan’s debut recording album, “Portraits of France and Spain: Piano Music from Impressionism and National Romanticism to the Avant-Garde, 1880-1960", is anticipated for release in 2024.

Dr. Chan serves as Lecturer in the Department of Music at Stanford University. She also serves as Coordinator of Keyboard Studies and Associate Professor of Music (Keyboard Studies/Music Theory) in the Department of Music at California State University, Stanislaus. Chan trained musically at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester (D.M.A.), Le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (Paris Conservatory of Music), Peabody Conservatory of Music (M.M.), Manhattan School of Music (B.M.), and the University of Michigan. She studied liberal arts with a concentration in French and French Literature at La Sorbonne, Columbia University, and the University of Michigan. Sarah Chan is a standing adjudicator for The American Prize Competitions as well as Board Member for Performance and Chair of the Performance Council for The College Music Society. -
Hongchan Choi

BioAs a musician/engineer, Hongchan strives to push boundaries of the open web platform for music technology.
He studied with Jonathan Berger, Chris Chafe, and Ge Wang for my doctoral research at CCRMA between 2010 and 2014. After completing the doctoral thesis 《Collaborative Musicking on the Web》 in 2014, Hongchan joined Google Chrome where he currently leads various web music technology projects as a Technical Lead and Manager.
Outside of Google, he serves as a co-chair of W3C Audio Working Group driving a collective effort of multiple industry professionals to design advanced audio capabilities for the web platform. Hongchan also continues to engage with academia as an Adjunct Professor at CCRMA, Stanford university. -
Debra Fong

BioViolinist Debra Fong is Concertmaster of the Peninsula Symphony, Associate Concertmaster of the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, and Principal Second Violinist of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. She spends her summers as a first violinist with the Grammy Award-winning Santa Fe Opera Orchestra.
Also dedicated teacher, Debra is a Lecturer in Music at Stanford University, teaching violin and chamber music, and she maintains a private violin studio. She is a faculty coach for Young Chamber Musicians, a guest conductor for the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, and a judge for several annual young artist concerto competitions. Debra is a former violin faculty member at The College of William & Mary, The Music Institute of Chicago, and New England Conservatory of Music Preparatory School.
Debra received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Violin Performance with Honors and Distinction from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she studied with Eric Rosenblith, James Buswell, Eugene Lehner, and Louis Krasner.
Debra has been a featured chamber musician at Toronto Summer Music; Bay Chamber Concerts in Maine; Grand Teton Music Festival; Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival; Yellow Barn Chamber Music Festival in Vermont; Sarasota Music Festival; and Yale/Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in Connecticut. She has been a guest artist with the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Chicago Chamber Musicians, North American New Music Festival in Buffalo, NY, and the New Music Festival at Santa Clara University. Debra is an avid proponent of contemporary music and has worked closely with composers such as Olivier Messiaen, Thomas Adès, Joan Tower, Bright Sheng, and Kaija Saariaho.
Debra's discography includes recordings with The Santa Fe Opera, indie pop vocalist Vienna Teng, Stanford Chamber Chorale, composer John Luther Adams, Mannheim Steamroller, and she has performed on numerous film soundtracks.
Debra plays a Giuseppe Rocca violin kindly on loan from Stanford University’s Harry R. Lange Instrument Collection. In her leisure time, Debra enjoys reading modern fiction, practicing yoga, playing word games, and seeking out excellent coffee. -
Joo-Mee Lee

Violinist Joo-Mee Lee has taken on several roles in the Department of Music at Stanford University since the fall of 2014. She served as director of the Stanford New Ensemble. As a Lecturer, she teaches courses on Introductory Violin and Professional Development in Music, and also gives individual lessons. She has worked closely with the Stanford Symphony and Philharmonia, and has overseen the annual Concerto Competition.
Previously, Lee served as an artist-in-residence and violin faculty at the University of Denver and at Colorado College. She also taught at Brandeis University, and was a sought-after teacher at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School in Boston.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Lee earned her Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University where she was a Roman Totenberg Scholarship recipient. Her doctoral dissertation is entitled An Analytical Study of Three String Quartets of Bernard Rands.
As a young musician, Lee was chosen to represent South Korea for the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, which performed at the Berlin Philharmonie, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Amsterdam Concertgebouw. She was a founding member of the Tonos String Quartet which won New England Conservatory’s Honor’s Quartet position. Her quartet took part in the Bank of America Celebrity Series with Rob Capilow, and performed live on Boston's WGBH radio among other concert venues throughout New England. The quartet was invited by the Joong-Ang Daily Newspaper to give a recital at Hoam Art Hall in Seoul, Korea.
Lee has been invited to various music festivals including Aspen, Banff, and Sarasota where she performed solo and chamber recitals. While she was in graduate school, she won a position in the DaVinci Quartet and toured throughout the United States, giving concerts and masterclasses. Concurrently, she won a position in the Colorado Springs Symphony (now Philharmonic), and became a tenured member.
As an avid new music advocate, Lee gave world premieres of chamber music and solo works by many contemporary composers. Among the composers with whom she has closely collaborated are Bernard Rands, Augusta Read Thomas, Samuel Adler, and Jennifer Higdon.
