Farah Bazzi
Ph.D. Student in History, admitted Autumn 2018
BioFarah Bazzi was born in Lebanon and raised in The Netherlands. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in early modern global history at Stanford University. Farah’s work attempts to bridge both Mediterranean and Atlantic history by focusing on how objects, people, and imaginations moved between the Ottoman world, Morocco, Iberia, and the Americas during the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Furthermore, Farah’s research interests include environmental thought, race, indigeneity, cosmology, cartography, and technologies of conquest. In her dissertation, Farah looks at the expulsion of the moriscos and their presence in the Americas, Morocco, and the Ottoman Empire from a socio-environmental perspective. In addition to this, Farah is interested the construction of Al-Andalus as an aesthetically appealing, pursuable, and transplantable natural and racialized landscape in Spanish, Arabic, and Ottoman sources.
Currently, Farah is one of the project founders and managers of the ‘Life in Quarantine: Witnessing Global Pandemic’ project sponsored by CESTA, the History Department, and the Division of Languages and Cultures. She is also the graduate coordinator for the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (CMEMS) at Stanford and the Graduate Student Counselor (director) on the board of the Renaissance Society of America (RSA). -
Georgina Beaty

BioGeorgina is the author of the short story collection The Party is Here (Freehand Books, 2021). Her fiction has appeared in New England Review, The Walrus, The New Quarterly, The Fiddlehead, PRISM and elsewhere. As an actor and playwright, she’s worked with theatres across Canada and internationally. A 2020-2022 Stegner Fellow in fiction, she holds an MFA from the University of British Columbia, has been supported by fiction residencies at MacDowell, Jentel and The Banff Centre, and was a screenwriting resident at the Canadian Film Centre. She's currently a Jones Lecturer in Creative Writing at Stanford University.

Patrick Behrer

BioI am an environmental and development economist on the Sustainability and Infrastructure team in the Development Research Group at the World Bank.
My research focuses on the relationship between human development and environmental conditions. In particular I examine the causes and consequences of air pollution and the role of adaptation in reducing the damaging consequences of climate change. My work has been covered in The New York Times, NPR, the LA Times, Marketplace, and The Guardian. For the most up-to-date list of my publications see my Google Scholar page or my current work.
Prior to the World Bank I was a post-doc at Stanford's Center on Food Security and the Environment affiliated with the labs of David Lobell and Marshall Burke. I received my PhD from Harvard University where I was a Harvard Environmental Economics Program pre-doctoral fellow and a PhD affiliate of Evidence for Policy Design as well as an EPA STAR Fellow. I also have a Masters degree in Agricultural and Resource Economics from Colorado State University and a PgDip in Environmental Management from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand where I was a Fulbright Fellow. -
Rodrigo Bello Carvalho

BioI am a field biologist deeply passionate about wildlife ecology and conservation. My academic and professional journey bridges research, fieldwork, and environmental stewardship across some of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems.
My work focuses on understanding the functional role of megafauna (large-bodied vertebrates) in shaping tropical ecosystems through processes such as frugivory, herbivory, and seed dispersal. I am particularly interested in how savanna biodiversity, structure, and functioning respond to the loss of megafauna (defaunation), and how ecological insights can inform restoration and conservation strategies in a rapidly changing world.
I hold a Master’s degree in Biodiversity Conservation and Management from the University of Oxford (2021), and graduated with honors in Biological Sciences (B.Sc., 2017) and Biology Teaching (B.Ed., 2018) from the University of Brasília (UnB). My ecological journey began at UnB’s Ecosystem Ecology Lab (2014–2018) under Prof. Mercedes Bustamante, where I first engaged with Cerrado ecology and savanna dynamics.
Driven by a commitment to applied conservation, I worked at the Brasília Zoological Garden Foundation (2018) and taught Science and Biology in Brasília’s private schools (2019), experiences that deepened my belief in connecting ecological science and conservation with communities.
At Oxford’s Ecosystems Lab (2020–2021), I studied defaunation and seed dispersal in the Cerrado, working under Dr. Imma Oliveras and Prof. Yadvinder Malhi. I later joined Brazil’s national environmental agency (ICMBio) as an Environmental Analyst and Park Ranger (2022–2023), where I was based in the Western Brazilian Amazon, engaging in biodiversity monitoring, sustainable management of natural resources, and frontline conservation enforcement of three Conservation Units within the Purus River Basin.
Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in Biology at Stanford University in the Dirzo Lab, where my research explores megafauna-ecosystem interactions across Brazilian and African savannas, with a focus on how defaunation reshapes ecosystems. I also collaborate with UNESP’s Bird Ecology Lab on frugivory, seed dispersal, and ecological restoration in the Atlantic Forest. -
Luca Bellodi
Postdoctoral Scholar, Political Science
BioLuca Bellodi is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. His current research focuses on American political institutions, specifically the interaction between politics, bureaucracy, and populism, and its consequences for the quality of government.
In Bellodi’s primary line of research, he studies politicians’ incentives to control the behavior of bureaucratic agencies, lawmakers’ reliance on bureaucratic expertise, and the role of bureaucracy in shaping the political agenda. He introduces innovative measurement strategies that combine natural language processing techniques and machine learning to address novel questions in the study of oversight, rulemaking, and the use of information in the policymaking process.
In a related line of research, Bellodi investigates why politicians adopt populist behaviors and examines the consequences of populism for government performance and the quality of bureaucracy.
Luca Bellodi holds a PhD in political science from University College London. Before joining Stanford, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Bocconi University in Milan. -
Amanda Bensel
Practitioner Programs Manager, Ethics In Society
Staff, Ethics In SocietyBioAmanda works as Practitioner Programs Manager at the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society where she helps manage courses exploring ethical questions in the technology sector for professionals from across the world. Formerly, she ran leadership development programs for an INGO called the Asia Foundation, advancing grassroots leaders from across Asia through tailored study tours and reflective leadership frameworks. Her professional background spans international development, environmental policy, youth instruction, urban planning and the creative arts. Amanda lived and worked in Nepal for four years, first as a Peace Corps Volunteer and later to lead graduate student field research and research social enterprises. She is a volunteer judge for UC Berkeley's Annual Big Ideas contest, a student innovation competition; is part of the Skyline Garden Alliance, a native plant restoration group in the east bay hills; sits at the Oakland Photo Workshop, a community run galley for the East Bay Photographers Collective; and pursues independent documentary photography and film projects. Every summer she teaches visual art at a youth summer camp for kids in the Sierra Nevadas. She holds a BA in Architecture with a minor in City Planning from the University of California Berkeley, a MA in International Environmental Policy from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and a masterclass certificate for “Visual Storytelling in New Media” from the International Center of Photography. She's an avid cyclist, hiker, artist and vipassana mediator.

On Leave from 04/01/2025BioThe research in the Bent laboratory is focused on understanding and controlling surface and interfacial chemistry and applying this knowledge to a range of problems in semiconductor processing, micro- and nano-electronics, nanotechnology, and sustainable and renewable energy. Much of the research aims to develop a molecular-level understanding in these systems, and hence the group uses of a variety of molecular probes. Systems currently under study in the group include functionalization of semiconductor surfaces, mechanisms and control of atomic layer deposition, molecular layer deposition, nanoscale materials for light absorption, interface engineering in photovoltaics, catalyst and electrocatalyst deposition.

Jonathan Berger
Denning Family Provostial Professor
BioJonathan Berger is the Denning Family Provostial Professor in Music at Stanford University, where he teaches composition, music theory, and cognition, and directs the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA).
Jonathan is a 2017 Guggenheim Fellow and a 2016 winner of the Rome Prize.
He was the founding co-director of the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SICA, now the Stanford Arts Institute) and founding director of Yale University’s Center for Studies in Music Technology
Described as “gripping” by both the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, “poignant”, “richly evocative” (San Francisco Chronicle), “taut, and hauntingly beautiful” (NY Times), Jonathan Berger’s recent works deal with both consciousness and conscience. His monodrama, My Lai, toured internationally. The Kronos Quartet's recording was released by Smithsonian/Folkways. His opera, The Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist was performed at Lincoln Center in July 2024. Other recent premiers include Hajar Yasini for narrator, string quartet and video (premiered by the Kronos Quartet), and Mekong:Soul (co-composed with Van Anh Vo) which was performed at the Kennedy Center and in Houston.
Thrice commissioned by The National Endowment for the Arts, Berger’a recent commissions include The Mellon and Rockefeller Foundations, Chamber Music Society, Lincoln Center, and Chamber Music America.
In addition to composition, Berger is an active researcher with over 80 publications in a wide range of fields relating to music, science and technology and has held research grants from DARPA, the Wallenberg Foundation, The National Academy of Sciences, the Keck Foundation, and others.
Berger is the PI of a major grant from the Templeton Religion Trust to study how music and architecture interact to create a sense of awe. -
Karol Berger
Osgood Hooker Professor in Fine Arts, Emeritus
BioKarol Berger (Ph.D. Yale 1975) is the Osgood Hooker Professor in Fine Arts, Emeritus at the Department of Music, as well as an affiliated faculty at the Department of German Studies, and an affiliated researcher at the Europe Center. A native of Poland, he has lived in the U.S. since 1968 and taught at Stanford since 1982. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Study and Conference Center, and Stanford Humanities Center. In 2011-12 he has been the EURIAS Senior Fellow at the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Vienna. In 2005-2006, he was the Robert Lehman Visiting Professor at Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies. He is a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, an honorary member of the American Musicological Society, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (Cracow), and a foreign member of the Academia Europaea. His Musica Ficta received the 1988 Otto Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological Society, his Bach's Cycle, Mozart's Arrow the 2008 Marjorie Weston Emerson Award of the Mozart Society of America, and his Beyond Reason the 2018 Otto Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological Society. In 2011 he received the Glarean Prize from the Swiss Musicological Society and in 2014 the Humboldt Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Paul Bergeron
Lecturer
BioDr. Paul Bergeron is a lecturer in the physics department, focusing on teaching the 40 series and engaging in curriculum reform. His background is in dark matter phenomenology, working on supersymmetric extensions to the Standard Model, detection of dark matter at neutrino telescopes, and the programmatic tools used by the community to make predictions. While doing particle physics research, his time was split with teaching, first as an LA at UCSC during his undergrad and then during his PhD at the University of Utah as a TA, Head TA, adjunct lecturer at a community college, and instructor for a continuing education course in astronomy that he developed. His time at the University of Utah also included Physics Education Research (PER) into the efficacy of Content Rich group problems as part of a curriculum redesign effort in the department there. Following his PhD, he did a post doc with the interdisciplinary education research group 3 Dimensional Learning for Undergraduate Science at Michigan State University. While there, he worked with faculty in the STEM Teaching and Learning Fellowship as they worked to align their teaching with how scientists think and do science, while doing research into the corresponding gateway course transformation effort and into student engagement with the Scientific Practice of using and constructing (scientific) models. After his post doc, he worked for two years as a professor at Pasadena Community College teaching introductory physics and astronomy lectures and laboratories. Originally from San Jose, he is excited to finally be back in the Bay Area and to be a part of the Stanford community!
