BioGabriella Muwanga is a Neurosciences graduate student in the Tawfik and Airan labs at Stanford. She is interested in understanding acute and chronic pain mechanisms and developing therapies for acute and chronic pain through basic and translational research. Gabriella holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. She is passionate about teaching, mentorship, science communication, and fostering diversity in science. Outside the lab, she enjoys writing, singing, drawing, Bible Study, and fellowship.

Manchula Navaratnam
Clinical Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Manchula Navaratnam is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Stanford University, specializing in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia. With over 16 years of expertise in the perioperative care of pediatric patients with complex cardiac conditions, Dr. Navaratnam serves as the anesthesiology lead for pediatric cardiac transplantation, ventricular assist devices, single ventricle physiology and perioperative hemostasis management.
Dr. Navaratnam’s research includes pivotal work on left ventricular outflow tract velocity time integral (LVOT VTI) as a measure of ventricular function, now widely utilized at Stanford Children’s Hospital. Dr Navaratnam has led multidisciplinary clinical studies to improve care for single ventricle physiology patients, developed standardized pathways for perioperative hemostasis management, and recently contributed to an FDA-funded multicenter trial investigating pulse oximetry accuracy in congenital heart disease patients with darker skin tones.
As a dedicated mentor and educator, Dr. Navaratnam founded and directs the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Learning (PCAL) workshop for fellows nationwide and leads Stanford’s undergraduate course, “Mending a Broken Heart.” Dr Navaratnam's mentorship has supported numerous trainees and collaborators, resulting in award-winning presentations and impactful research contributions. Dr. Navaratnam is an associate editor for Pediatric Anesthesia, an active peer reviewer for leading journals, a coach and board member for the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society, and an active contributor to national committees and task forces advancing faculty development and the field of pediatric cardiac anesthesia.
Dr. Navaratnam's mission is providing exceptional and compassionate patient care while training the next generation of leaders in the field. -

Teresa Phuongtram Nguyen
Clinical Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioTeresa Nguyen, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Stanford Medicine and faculty at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI). She serves as a co-Principal Investigator on a cross-disciplinary initiative between Stanford HAI and the Department of Computer Science, directing the development of autonomous quadruped robotics for robotics education and deployment in clinical applications. Her research further develops frameworks for the integration of machine learning models into healthcare delivery systems and their impact on clinical decision-making.
Previously a Scientific Researcher at Genentech, Dr. Nguyen co-invented and patented a series of therapeutics for chronic and neuropathic pain. She holds a BS in Chemistry and an MD from Stanford University, where she conducted research in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Carolyn Bertozzi.
A first-generation immigrant, U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholar (Arabic/Morocco), and licensed helicopter pilot, Dr. Nguyen is the co-founder of two organizations: The Lighthouse Initiative, a mentorship platform achieving a 100% college admissions success rate for first-generation students, and Hands-On Robotics, a nonprofit accelerating technical education through accessible hardware and curriculum. She continues to serve as the instructor for Chemistry Unleashed (Chem 93) at the Stanford Department of Chemistry, bridging molecular theory with clinical practice for the next generation of scientists.
