    BioMatthew Edwards is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. In this role, Matthew also serves as the assistant director of residency training for the general adult psychiatry residency program. His clinical interests are in community and forensic psychiatry and his research interests lie at the intersection of medical history, ethics, and public policy.

    Dr. Edwards graduated from Princeton University in 2010 with a degree in Sociology, magna cum laude, and received a graduate certificate in public health from the University of Texas School of Public Health in 2012. He received his MD, summa cum laude, with honors in research from the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine in 2017. He completed his residency training in adult psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2021 and his fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine in 2022. He was a Pearce Fellow in the History of Medicine at the Clendening Library of the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2015.

    His clinical interests are in community psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. At Stanford, Dr. Edwards treats patients in the division of adult psychiatry and the centerspace clinic. This recovery-oriented clinic provides culturally-contextualized and trauma-informed care for people with marginalized, multiple, and intersecting identities. He teaches the history of psychiatry to general psychiatry residents and forensic psychiatry fellows. Dr. Edwards regularly speaks about race, trauma, structural inequality, and the history of medicine at conferences and invited lectures.

    BioDr. Eisen is a Clinical Associate Professor and CA Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She works with the INSPIRE clinic at Stanford and is the Inpatient Director of Psychological Services for the acute inpatient psychiatric units at Stanford Hospital. Her research and clinical interest center on therapeutic interventions that support recovery for individuals living with serious mental illness, in particular for individuals experiencing psychosis. Dr. Eisen received her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, and her PhD from the University of Connecticut, and completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University. She is trained in CBT for psychosis (CBTp) and provides training and consultation in CBTp and CBTp informed skills to community-based clinicians, graduate students, medical students and residents, to support the use of recovery-oriented psychosocial interventions with individuals experiencing psychosis.

    BioBurcin Ikiz, PhD, is a neuroscientist whose work explores how climate change, environmental degradation, and broader ecological crises affect brain health across the lifespan. Her research focuses on identifying the neurobiological and psychosocial impacts of climate-related stressors, such as air pollution, heat, displacement, and food insecurity, and translating these insights into public policy, prevention, community-based adaptation strategies, and planetary health solutions.

    Dr. Ikiz is the Founder and Director of EcoNeuro, a research initiative that bridges neuroscience and the environment, and the Chair of the International Neuro Climate Working Group (NCWG), a global consortium comprising over 300 researchers, clinicians, and public health experts. NCWG was recently recognized by the World Economic Forum as one of the top global initiatives addressing the intersection of mental health and climate change. She is also the Co-Founder and President of Banyan Commons, a nonprofit action tank advancing ecological brain resilience.

    In 2025, she was named a Grist 50 Climate Fixer, recognized among climate and justice leaders building equitable, science-driven futures. I advise international organizations, including the World Health Organization and the Council on Foreign Relations, and serve on scientific and advisory boards for leading climate and health initiatives, such as the Climate Mental Health Network and the Climate Cares Centre.

    Her ongoing projects include developing a Brain Resilience Index and creating a landmark State-of-Science Report on climate change and brain health. She also leads international research and policy initiatives on heat, air pollution, brain aging, and neurodevelopment; has contributed to the State of Global Air 2025 report; and supports WHO efforts to develop training tools on air pollution, brain, and mental health. She is co-editing a forthcoming open-access book with MIT Press, Toward an Ecological and Green Neuroscience Universe. Dr. Ikiz is a frequent speaker at international policy forums, including the United Nations, COP, and World Bank thematic dialogues.

    At Stanford, she contributes to transdisciplinary efforts linking psychiatry, neuroscience, and planetary health, with a focus on advancing brain health equity in an era of ecological change. She is also collaborating with Stanford’s CIRCLE Initiative, which spearheads community interventions for climate-related mental health.

    BioDr. C. Erickson-Davis is a psychiatrist and medical anthropologist specializing in the care of patients with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), and other complex neuropsychiatric presentations. Her clinical work is grounded in a deep respect for the lived experience of illness and healing and integrates neurological, psychiatric, and sociocultural perspectives. She is committed to collaborative, trauma-informed care that honors the mind-body relationship without reduction.

    Her research investigates how theories of mind and brain are shaped by social context - and how, in turn, those theories of perception shape lived experience, including in the clinic. She is developing the framework of Perception as Constitutive Intra-action (PCI) to theorize these dynamics, and is currently writing a book on the lived experience of visual prosthesis users and the history of “information” in the neurosciences, tracing how it has shaped theories, technologies, and subjective experience.

    She leads the Precision Language Lab Initiative at Stanford, a space for collaborative inquiry into how lived experience, narrative, and perception can be more meaningfully integrated into the clinical neurosciences.

    BioDr. Eshel (he/him/his) is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    His clinical focus is the full-spectrum mental health care of sexual and gender minorities, with particular interest in depression, anxiety, and the complex effects of trauma in this population. He works in collaboration with other primary care and mental health providers at the Stanford LGBTQ+ program.

    His research interests (www.staarlab.com) include the use of optogenetic, electrophysiological, neuroimaging, and behavioral approaches to probe the neural circuits of reward processing, decision making, and social behavior. He has won multi-year grants from the National Institutes of Health, Burroughs-Wellcome Fund, One Mind Foundation, Sergey Brin Family Foundation, Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, and Simons Foundation to further his research.

    Dr. Eshel has published articles on the behavioral roles for dopamine, serotonin, and acetylcholine; the neuroscience of irritability, depression, and addiction; LGBTQ health; and the mechanism of transcranial magnetic stimulation. His work has appeared in Nature, Science, Neuron, Nature Neuroscience, Annual Review of Neuroscience, JAMA, JAMA Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Journal of Neuroscience, among other leading journals. He is a co-inventor on a patent for a new class of drugs for addiction, and also the author of the book Learning: The Science Inside, a publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

    He has delivered presentations on the neural circuits of motivated behavior, anger expression in patients with PTSD, how dopamine facilitates learning, and LGBTQ-related topics at keynotes and invited seminars in >10 countries. He is also an associate editor of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health, and an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous publications including Nature, Science, Neuron, Nature Communications, JAMA Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, and Current Biology.

    Dr. Eshel has won honors for his scholarship and advocacy, including the Marshall Scholarship, the One Mind Rising Star Award, the Outstanding Resident Award from the National Institute of Mental Health, the Science and SciLifeLab Grand Prize for Young Scientists, the Freedman Award (honorable mention) from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, the Polymath Award from Stanford's psychiatry department, and the National LGBT Health Achievement Award.

    He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, Society of Biological Psychiatry, Association of Gay & Lesbian Psychiatrists, Society for Neuroscience, and other professional associations. He is also an advocate for LGBTQ rights, recently serving as the chair of Stanford's LGBTQ+ Benefits Advocacy Committee.

    Prior to Stanford, Dr. Eshel trained and conducted research at the National Institutes of Health, Princeton University, the World Health Organization, University College London, and Harvard University.

    BioDr. Flint Espil researches the etiology and treatment of tic disorders (including Tourette’s), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and body-focused repetitive behaviors. He is interested in how psychosocial factors, the environment, and underlying brain circuitry influence treatment outcomes among individuals seeking treatment. He is also exploring ways to adapt and implement evidence-based mental health approaches in community settings. He is currently collaborating with community-based organizations in East Palo Alto to improve access to care for youth in school settings.

    BioDr. Fischer’s research focuses on characterizing risk and resilience factors in depression. She has been awarded an NIH Career Development Award (K23) and Klingenstein Foundation Fellowship in Adolescent Depression to build her program of clinical and translational research at Stanford. Dr. Fischer's program of clinical care focused on the delivery and teaching of evidence-based clinical interventions that enhance resilience, with a focus on addressing the unique stressors encountered in academia and academic medicine that may contribute to risk and resilience in mood and anxiety disorders.

    Dr. Fischer’s translational program of research focuses on:
    (1) Improving our understanding of protective biomarkers of resilience to depression
    (2) Characterizing the effects of cannabis on neurobiological function and depressive symptoms
    (3) Developing neurobiologically-guided interventions for depressive disorders, particularly those that co-occur with cannabis and other substance use

    Dr. Fischer earned her BSc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Brain and Cognitive Sciences, where she conducted research in the Early Childhood Cognition Laboratory. She then completed the MD/PhD Program at Dartmouth, where she obtained her PhD in in Neuroscience. Dr. Fischer’s doctoral research focused on characterizing the acute effects of cannabis in patients with schizophrenia and co-occurring cannabis use disorder. She then completed the Stanford Psychiatry Residency Training Program as a member of the Research Track, and an NIH funded T-32 postdoctoral research fellowship within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

    BioDr. Caroline Fleck received her doctorate in Psychology & Neuroscience from Duke University, and went on to specialize in cognitive behavioral therapies including Exposure and Response Prevention, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Parent Management Training, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and Behavioral Activation. She is the founder and clinical director of Luma - a network of evidence-based clinicians in private practice. Dr. Fleck is also a trainer, educator, and public speaker on the topics of evidence-based approaches in psychology, mindfulness, and the use of technology in mental health care. Her lectures and courses at Stanford focus on training residents, post-docs, and faculty in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and risk management.

    BioDr. Giambarberi is a double-board-certified physician who completed her general psychiatry training at Wake Forest University School of Medicine (2018) and her Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry (BNNP) training at Stanford University School of Medicine (2019). Her past experience includes leading, creating, expanding, and providing neuropsychiatry education and services to communities of North Carolina and other areas of the southeast region.

    As a clinical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Stanford, Dr. Giambarberi supervises trainees in the Neuropsychiatry Section and the Individual Psychotherapy Clinic. Dr. Giambarberi is the director of BNNP didactics, as well as neurology core rotations and elective rotations within the neuropsychiatry section.

    BioDr. Gould received her Ph.D in psychology from West Virginia University. She completed her internship at VA Palo Alto Health Care System and an Advanced Fellowship in Geriatrics at the GRECC. Dr. Gould is board certified in geropsychology. Her research program focuses on increasing older adults' access to mental health care. Her research has included development and testing of tailored, self-directed mental health interventions in older adults, including a video-delivered progressive muscle relaxation program with telephone coaching support in reducing anxiety and improving functioning and a digital mental health intervention for depression. She also works to help older adults learn how to use technology through qualitative research, development of educational materials, and coaching interventions. Her most recent work examines telehealth models of geriatric mental health care in older Veterans. Dr. Gould has an active interest in training future geriatric mental health clinicians and researchers. She provides mentorship in the following areas: geriatric mental health interventions, technology-delivered interventions for older adults, telehealth models of care, program evaluation/quality improvement, and mixed methods research approaches.

    BioDr. Ilang M. Guiroy is a board-certified, fellowship-trained physician scientist and psychiatrist at Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Guiroy is director of the Guiroy Lab at Stanford. Her research explores maternal-infant mental health and digital mental health, including the use of social media, digital communities, and AI for mental health. She developed a groundbreaking telehealth platform to deliver psychotherapy via group chat to digital communities.

    Dr. Guiroy treats mental health conditions in patients throughout the lifespan, from conception to elder age. She has a special interest in infant, child, and maternal mental health and provides medication management during pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding. Dr. Guiroy provides expert support to patients coping with birth trauma, transitioning to motherhood, and fostering infant attachment and maternal bonding. Dr. Guiroy is skilled in over twelve therapy modalities including maternal-infant dyadic therapy, interpersonal therapy (IPT), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

    Dr. Guiroy has published her research in peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Technology in Behavioral Science and Telemedicine and e-Health. She has also presented to her peers at national conferences for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) and the Society for Digital Mental Health (SDMH).
