Nicole E Arkin
Clinical Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioI am a critical care anesthesiologist who is devoted to providing excellent clinical care for the sickest patients and their families as well as training our next generation of leaders in critical care medicine.
The ICU is a unique and fascinating world where I get to combine my love of abnormal physiology, teaching, high-stakes medical care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and deep connections with patients and families. As an intensivist, anesthesiologist, and medical educator, there is no place where this is truer than at Stanford. After completing both medical school and anesthesiology residency at Stanford, I experienced the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic along with the innovation and collaboration that can result from moments of crisis as an Critical Care Medicine fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital. I was drawn to return to Stanford to join our incredible group of intensivists based on the emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and professional growth. This rich environment is filled with interesting medicine and brilliant colleagues; it is a place that supports my goals of educating and training future leaders in critical care medicine while taking care of the sickest patients in the hospital and their families.
While clinical practice is the foundation of what I love about being a physician, I am also interested in leadership development both through education and research. I have a Masters of Science in Teaching and spent two years as a high school chemistry teacher in the South Bronx through Teach for America where I focused on curriculum development. In residency, I became interested in feedback and led a mixed methods research study that identified gender bias in resident feedback during the early years of anesthesiology residency. Currently, I am the Associate Program Director of our Anesthesia Critical Care fellowship and am the Director of the required clerkship for medical students in the ICU. I feel incredibly privileged to work in a place that supports these pursuits and encourages me to be the best physician, colleague, and educator I can be. -
Michael W. Chen
Clinical Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioMichael W. Chen, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Stanford University. He serves as an Associate Medical Director of the Medical-Surgical ICU and is also the Director of Adult Liver Transplant Anesthesiology. His clinical and academic interests center on perioperative management of complex abdominal transplantation, pheochromocytomas, non-OR anesthesia (NORA), and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). His other professional interests include quality improvement, teaching, and performing anesthesia for Great Apes.

Ana Maria Crawford
Clinical Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Ana Maria Crawford is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. She also holds a master’s degree in Global Health Sciences. Dr. Crawford founded the Division of Global Health Equity within the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford in 2011, and she currently serves as the Director of Global Engagement Strategy. For over 20 years, she has worked to improve access to medical education and professional development for global colleagues. Dr. Crawford serves on multiple committees and boards at the local, national and international levels. With expertise in medical education and global perioperative care, she is also a consultant and advisor to several international organizations. She is the proud recipient of both the Kevin Malott and Nicholas M. Greene Humanitarian Service Awards for her work advancing perioperative and critical care globally.

Javier Lorenzo

BioDr. Javier Lorenzo is the Associate Division Chief of Anesthesia Critical Care in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. He is also a Medical Informatics Director for the critical care areas and serves as Co-Chair of the Patient Safety Committee for Stanford HealthCare.

David Stahl
Clinical Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDavid Stahl, MD FASA is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at Stanford University and the Division Chief of Critical Care. Clinically he has a particular interest in Obstetric Critical Care and served on the Maternal Mortality Review Committee for the state of Ohio for almost 10 years. His combined interest in education and obstetric critical care has led to appointment as the Vice Chair for the ASA Education Track Subcommittee on Obstetric Anesthesia, and as chair of the SOAP Education Steering Committee and member of the SOAP Board of Directors. He is also an APPLIED examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. His other professional interests include the use of technology in medical education, as well as exploring resilience and flourishing in medical trainees and faculty.
