Debra Lee Kaysen
Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Public Mental Health and Population Sciences)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of my current research focus is on the development of testing of accessible, scaleable, and effective treatments for trauma-related disorders and related comorbidities (e.g. substance use disorders, HIV, mood disorders). This work has focused on addressing trauma-related disorders especially in underserved populations and settings. This includes research in rural communities, with Native American communities, and with sexual minorities. My research has had a strong impact on building an evidence base on adaptations of psychotherapies for PTSD and substance use disorders for diverse populations both within and outside the United States. Our findings demonstrate that complex cognitive behavioral psychotherapies like Cognitive Processing Therapy can be culturally adapted and delivered in challenging settings (conflict settings, high poverty environments) with significant and lasting change in PTSD, depression, and functioning. This has led to work adapting CPT for diverse populations within the United States (rural Native Americans, urban Latinos) and outside of it (Iraq, DRC). Other research has focused on treatment for PTSD/SUD. My research has also found support for the use of brief telehealth interventions to build treatment engagement and to reduce drinking among trauma-exposed populations. In addition, my work has been critical in testing the feasibility of novel trauma-focused interventions for use by those with PTSD and SUD, thus paving the road for more rigorous research studies.
Current PI'ed research studies include: 1) developing and evaluating a brief motivational interviewing intervention designed to increase treatment-seeking among military personnel with untreated PTSD; a two-arm randomized comparative effectiveness trial to evaluate prevention of HIV/STI sexual risk behavior by addressing PTSD through Narrative Exposure Therapy or substance use through Motivational Interviewing among Native American men and women with PTSD; and 3) a comparison of outcomes among patients randomized to initially receive pharmacotherapy or Written Exposure Therapy delivered in primary care as well as comparing outcomes among patients randomized to treatment sequences (i.e., switching and augmenting) for patients who do not respond to the initial treatment. -

Ryan Keenan, OD

BioDr. Keenan is a board-certified optometrist with the Stanford Health Care Byers Eye Institute and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Keenan diagnoses and treats a wide range of ocular and visual issues, such as vision problems related to stroke, intracranial lesions and tumors, and other neurological conditions. His clinical experience involves recognizing and caring for complex neuro-ophthalmic diseases. These include complications from diseases of the nervous system that adversely affect vision.
Dr. Keenan’s research interests include understanding genetic variations related to progressive weakness of the eye muscles. These conditions range from drooping eyelids to increasing limitations in eye movement.
Dr. Keenan has presented research and clinical findings to his peers at national and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of the American Academy of Optometry and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. -

My research program leverages computational genomics, human brain cellular models, and molecular neuroscience techniques to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of human brain development and how dysfunction in these processes lead to psychiatric disorders.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory tries to find out how pharmacologic agents used in the practice of anesthesia (general anesthetic and analgesic agents) lead to therapeutically desireable endpoints including unconsciousness, immobility and absence of pain. The old idea that general anesthetics are uniformly non-specific "membrane stabilizers" is giving way to a new realization that these agents exert specific actions on particular ion channels and intracellular signalling systems.

Vanessa Kennedy

BioDr. Kennedy is a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of myeloid malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myelofibrosis (MF). She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kennedy's research focuses on the use of clinical informatics and bioinformatics in understanding cancer biology and improving patient outcomes. She is also actively involved in interventional clinical trials. BioWayne Kepner, PhD, MPH is a public health researcher whose scholarship focuses on health disparities and substance use among vulnerable populations. Dr. Kepner is currently a T-32 Post-doctoral Fellowship in Pain and Substance Use at Stanford University's School of Medicine, where he will continue his research under the mentorship of Dr. Keith Humphreys and Dr. Mark McGovern.
Dr. Kepner received his doctoral degree from the Joint Doctoral Program in Interdisciplinary Research on Substance Use at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego. His research focused on substance use disorders, health services utilization, and geospatial analysis of health data, with a particular emphasis on older adult populations. Dr. Kepner has extensive experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, having conducted interviews with older adults on cannabis use and analyzed large-scale electronic health records. He has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications on topics ranging from cannabis use trends to emergency department utilization for substance-related diagnoses. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Kepner is committed to community engagement, co-founding Aztecs For Recovery, a collegiate recovery program at SDSU. -

Kian Keyashian

BioThe management of inflammatory bowel disease continues to evolve, with the introduction of biologic and small molecule therapies and new goals of treatment, with an emphasis on healing the bowel. My career goal since my graduation from IBD fellowship in 2012 has been to improve the outcomes and quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. In line with these goals, my research has focused investigating new noninvasive diagnostic test, finding factors early in the disease course that might predict a more aggressive disease course and need for different therapies, and investigating new promising effective medications with less side effects.

MSTP StudentBioTimothy is an MD/PhD student studying cancer biology and biomedical informatics at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a joint member of Kara Davis's laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics and Garry Nolan's Laboratory in the Department of Pathology.
As a biomedical data scientist, Timothy's research focuses on the application of machine learning to single-cell data analysis in the context of pediatric leukemia. Through the use of emerging, high-throughout single-cell technologies such as mass cytometry and sequence-based cytometry, Timothy's research is designed to build predictive models of patient outcomes - such as relapse or minimal residual disease (MRD) - at the point of diagnosis. To do so, he uses a variety of computational tools including generalized linear models, clustering, and deep learning. In addition, his work prioritizes constructing easy-to-use, highly-reproducible data analysis pipelines that can be shared as open-source tools for the scientific community.
Outside of science, Timothy has a longstanding interest in human rights and social justice work among members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community. He currently serves as the resident data scientist for the Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion for LGBTQ+ medicals students in medical schools across the United States. As a data scientist at MSPA, Timothy analyzes and visualizes data to guide MSPA's strategic decision-making as well as for academic publication. He also advises and mentors other student members of MSPA performing data analysis in Python and R.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Timothy has received several institutional and national award for both research and advocacy. These include a National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the National Cancer Institute, a Junior Leadership Award from the Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) LGBT Workforce, Stanford Medicine’s Integrated Strategic Plan Star Award, and a Point Foundation Scholarship. -

Dr. Khaderi envisions the application of Symbiotic principles as the key to unlocking ambient intelligence.
Khaderi has extensive domain expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), spatial computing (virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MxR)), wearables, gaming, IoT, Web3, applied neuroscience, human factors, and human-machine interfaces/interaction. His research interests include developing personalized human intelligent systems based on the human brain and sensory systems, developing technologies to optimize human performance, and combining biological and computational principles to expand our capabilities in research, clinical practice, and everyday life. Dr. Khaderi's approach to advance research interests and develop practical applications for everyday use is building technology, companies and collaborative partnerships across academia and industry.

Ali Raza Khaki, MD

BioDr. Khaki is a medical oncologist and clinical assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
In his clinical practice, he treats patients with all forms of genitourinary cancer, including kidney, bladder, prostate, and testicular. He also regularly attends on the inpatient oncology service at Stanford Hospital.
With each patient, he is devoted to providing exceptional, humanistic care and has been recognized throughout his career for his humanism. As a medical student, he was named to the national Gold Humanism Honor Society and he received the Reza Gandjei Humanism Award as a medical resident at UCSF.
His research interests include novel therapies for genitourinary cancers, with a focus on urothelial cancer outcomes. He also has studied health care utilization and costs for end-of-life care of cancer patients.
Dr. Khaki has earned honors and recognition from the American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, Conquer Cancer Foundation, and other organizations.
He has authored numerous articles on topics such as immunotherapy for urothelial cancer, management of cancer patients with COVID-19, and utilization of end-of-life care by cancer patients. Christina Khan, MD, PhD

BioDr. Christina Khan is a pediatric and adult psychiatrist and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She specializes in the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety, LGBTQ+ health, and physician wellness. Dr. Khan’s training includes doctoral and postdoctoral research training in community and public health, including specialized training in global health and PTSD research and treatment. Her work focuses on addressing health disparities in underserved populations and treating vulnerable and marginalized populations here in the United States and abroad.
At Stanford, she is co-Chief of the Diversity and Cultural Mental Health Section in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and founder and Director of THRIVE, Stanford's LGBTQ+ mental health clinic. She has been working with WellConnect since 2014 addressing burnout, trauma, and secondary trauma in Stanford physicians. Dr. Khan is also a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH) and serves on the CIGH Program Leadership Committee.
Nationally, Dr. Khan serves as Past President of the Association of Women Psychiatrists and as Councilor for the Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities of the American Psychiatric Association. -
Danish Khan
Basic Life Research Scientist, Biochemistry
BioDanish is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Prof. Ron Kopito and Onn Brandman's labs in the Department of Biochemistry at Stanford University. His research focuses on cellular responses to stalled translation, specifically the ribosome-associated quality control (RQC) pathway, which resolves collisions between ribosomes during translation. In a surprising twist to the central dogma of molecular biology, an RQC factor protein, Rqc2, enables translation to resume on the ribosome - but without input from mRNA! This process, known as "CAT tailing," involves the addition of alanines (in bacteria) or both alanines and threonines (in yeast) to the C-terminus of the stalled nascent protein.
Danish’s research explores key questions about this critical protein quality control pathway, including how ribosomes regulate CAT tail sequence and length and determine when to stop CAT tailing. His findings have significantly advanced our understanding of the pathway’s dual role in protein degradation and aggregation, a balance crucial for proteostasis and cellular health. His work demonstrates that pulling forces from various cellular interactions regulate CAT tail identity, length, and sequence. He discovered that threonine in CAT tails prevents α-helix formation, aids in nascent chain extrusion from the ribosome, and is the primary driver of CAT-tailed protein aggregation - offering a potential target for treating protein-aggregation diseases. His first-author work on this is available on bioRxiv.
Danish’s discoveries are key to understanding the evolution of CAT tailing and its impact on disease, as mutations in NEMF (the human equivalent of yeast Rqc2) are linked to neurodegenerative disorders in humans, mice, and flies. His findings lay the groundwork for CAT tail studies in human cells, where a broader range of amino acids incorporated as CAT tails may yield new therapeutic opportunities for neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases.
Beyond his own projects, Danish has contributed broadly within the Brandman lab. He co-developed ReporterSeq, a CRISPRi-based genomic screening technique published in eLife, and collaborates with Bingwei Lu’s lab (Stanford Pathology) to investigate the consequences of RQC pathway dysfunction on cellular health. Leveraging his background in drug development, he is also developing small molecule inhibitors of CAT tailing. His research is funded by the Dean’s Fellowship (Bernard Cohen Postdoctoral Fellowship Fund) and the Mikitani Cancer Research Fellowship from the Stanford Cancer Institute.
Before his postdoc, Danish earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University, where he studied small molecule inhibitors that interfere with Sec14, a lipid-signaling protein in fungi. His work led to the discovery of two new classes of Sec14 inhibitors and the identification of a family of heme-binding lipid transfer proteins, culminating in three first-author publications in eLife, Cell Chemical Biology, and the Journal of Lipid Research. He also contributed as a middle author to five additional studies and received the John Mack Prescott Award for Outstanding Research at Texas A&M.
Danish began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Presidency College, Kolkata, where he ranked second in his college and fourth in the university. He then earned a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from Banaras Hindu University while on the Government of India’s DBT Fellowship.
Beyond science, Danish has a strong interest in the intersection of law and technology, frequently explores related literature, and is an avid observer of the American federal court system. -

Saad A. Khan, MD

BioDr. Khan is a fellowship-trained cancer specialist with board certification in oncology and hematology. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology.
Dr. Khan focuses on the treatment of head and neck cancers, advanced thyroid cancers, and neuroendocrine tumors. He recognizes the broad effects of these conditions on daily living and aims to develop personalized, comprehensive treatment plans that optimize health and quality of life.
Dr. Khan’s research interests include therapeutic clinical trials as well as ways to reduce toxicities that some patients may experience when receiving cancer treatment. His research activities include ongoing clinical trials of targeted and immune therapy for aggressive thyroid cancer.
He has published numerous articles on his research discoveries in peer-reviewed journals such as the JAMA Oncology, Investigational New Drugs, and others. Topics include new drug treatments for small cell lung cancer and for cancers of the head and neck, racial and gender disparities in certain types of cancer, and management of the potentially toxic effects of cancer therapies.
Dr. Khan is a member of the NRG Head and Neck Committee. NRG brings together internationally recognized groups (the first words in their names form the acronym “NRG”) to conduct cancer clinical research and share study results. The objective is to inform clinical decision making and healthcare policy worldwide.
Dr. Khan is a member of the ECOG Head and Neck Core and Thoracic Committees. ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) is part of one of the five groups of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) Program.
He also is a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Central IRB for Early Phase Clinical Trials.
When not providing patient care or conducting research, Dr. Khan enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, and relaxing at the beach. -

Bayan Kharrat

BioDr. Bayan Kharrat is a postdoctoral researcher in the Goins Lab at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she studies the mechanisms governing fate commitment in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in Drosophila, with a focus on identifying key regulatory factors involved in this process.
Dr. Kharrat earned her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Szeged and conducted her graduate research at the HUN-REN Biological Research Centre in Szeged, where she investigated the dual role of Headcase, an imaginal cell factor, in maintaining progenitor cells in the larval lymph gland. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe work in epithelial tissue as a model system to study stem cell biology, cancer and new molecular therapeutics. Epithelia cover external and internal body surfaces and undergo constant self-renewal while responding to diverse environmental stimuli. Epithelial homeostasis precisely balances stem cell-sustained proliferation and differentiation-associated cell death, a balance which is lost in many human diseases, including cancer, 90% of which arise in epithelial tissues.

Sarita Khemani

BioDr. Sarita Khemani is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and a Neurosurgery Hospital Medicine physician. Her clinical focus is preventing and managing medical complications in hospitalized neurosurgical patients in the postoperative setting. Her interests include the intersection of medicine and technology to optimize a healthy lifespan.
Dr. Khemani is passionate about education and has served as Director of perioperative medicine rotations for Stanford medicine residents, medical students, and physician assistant students. She is the recipient of Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Khemani is also the founder and co-director of Stanford Medicine Clinical Summer Internship, a globally recognized program for premed students. The program provides numerous scholarships to minority/underrepresented students to empower future leaders in medicine.
Dr. Khemani has been an invited speaker at various medical conferences and meetings. In addition, she was invited to speak at the Stanford Neurosurgery Grand Rounds and give the keynote speech at the Stanford Physician Assistant student graduation ceremony. She has appeared as a guest on various media outlets in the US and on international television.

BioI obtained my PhD in genetic epidemiology at Queensland University of Technology (Australia), where my research was focused on using genetic and genomic approaches to identify risk factors for endometrial cancer. During my graduate studies, I gained experience in large-scale genetic association studies and leveraging the correlation between diseases in genetic studies to identify novel genetic variants associated with endometrial cancer. I also developed expertise in various statistical genetic approaches in multi-omics data, including fine-mapping and colocalization analyses, to prioritize candidate causal variants and genes. I also gained extensive experience in genetic causal inference analysis to infer causality between risk factors and health outcomes.
My research focus since moving to Stanford has been the identification of genetic and non-genetic determinants of cardiometabolic diseases. I am currently involved in projects including large-scale genetic association studies, multi-trait analysis with correlated traits, development and validation of polygenic risk scores, integrative analyses with multi-omics data, as well as Mendelian randomization analyses to advance our understanding of the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to cardiometabolic diseases.
