Paulo J. L. Adeodato
Visiting Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioProf. Adeodato has an uncommon profile and over 35 years of professional experience. He mixes features of a broadband academic researcher with those of an entrepreneur/businessman. He has been a federal tenure-track professor at Centro de Informática–UFPE for the last 20 years engaged in research on Decision Support Systems, Data Mining and Knowledge Engineering.
He is currently on sabbatical leave as a visiting professor at Stanford School of Medicine developing a systematic approach to help prevent burnout of health care professionals. Last year he engaged a 3-month research as visiting scholar at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education developing approaches for big data analytics on open access data sources for helping validate and propose public policies for education in Brazil.
Paulo got his BSc degree in Electronics Engineering (1982), his MBA in Production Engineering (1989), his MSc in computer Science (1991) all at UFPE and his PhD in Mathematics (1997) at King´s College London. Paulo started his career in industry as Production Engineer at DigiRede (Leading Computer Manufacturer in Brazil) and became Quality Manager. Later, he worked as Telecom Consultant at CHESF (Power generation) and, after his PhD degree, became a Professor at UFPE (1997). He has published dozens of journal and conference papers on data mining and time series forecasting and supervised 9 PhD theses and 19 MSc dissertations.
In business, Paulo is Founder and Partner of NeuroTech S.A. involved in high-tech entrepreneurship, innovation and strategic planning. Expert in financial applications of data mining, after having taken the company to self-sustainability, much of his recent research has been motivated by social applications, mostly in Education and Medicine, involving not only data mining solutions but also theoretical advances to the artificial intelligence field.
In other applied activities, he has organized international competitions in PAKDD Conference in Bangkok (2009) and Hyderabad (2010) and in BRICS-CCI Conference in Porto de Galinhas (2013) and was a competitor in some other competitions, having won the 2nd place in PAKDD 2007 (data mining), 2nd place in NN3 in 2007 and 1st place winner in IEEE-ICTSF in 2012 in Madrid, the last two in time series forecasting. Paulo has created the first course on data mining course in Brazil back in 1999, has developed with his team over 400 data mining solutions for actual applications, having over 100 of them been deployed in companies in Brazil.
He is one of CIn-UFPE’s researchers working on the multinational SWAMP project sponsored by the Brazilian National Network for Research and Training (RNP) and European Commission (EC) for developing an Intelligent Irrigation System based on Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enable the optimizations of irrigation, water distribution and consumption. Previously, he had carried out a Canadian-Brazilian research project involving NeuroTech, CIn-UFPE, Ottawa+Dalhousie Universities and GSTS Co. for developing an Intelligent Vessel Traffic Monitoring System for the international market. He has also lead and done research in over 10 other sponsored data mining projects in energy, finances, auditing and education domains and is, currently, the leading researcher in an educational project for the government of the state of Paraíba.
He is a member of the IT Strategic Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce-Pernambuco and has been a committee member of the TECNOVA program for funding innovation in Brazilian state agencies. He has also been invited to give talks on high-tech innovation for Brazilian universities and for IEEE in Silicon Valley in 2016. He was a member of the IEEE Industry Liaison Committee and is currently Industry Liaison Chair of the World Congress on Computational Intelligence (WCCI 2018). At UFPE, Paulo is a member of the Student Retention and Dropout Committee for educational policies.

BioDr. Anna Lembke received her undergraduate degree in Humanities from Yale University and her medical degree from Stanford University. She is on the faculty of the Stanford University School of Medicine, a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and a diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine. She is the Program Director for the Stanford University Addiction Medicine Fellowship, and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and commentaries, including in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and Addiction. Dr. Lembke sees patients, teaches, and does research. She is the author of a book on the prescription drug epidemic: “Drug Dealer, MD: How Doctors Were Duped, Patients Got Hooked, and Why It’s So Hard to Stop” (Johns Hopkins University Press, October 2016).
Dr. Anna Lembke's key areas of interest include treating patients who have become addicted to prescription drugs. She takes a holistic, harm-reduction approach to each patient, and encourages spiritual and alternative therapies in the process of healing.

Jody Leng, MD, MS

BioDr. Leng is an anesthesiologist with fellowship training in regional anesthesiology. She treats patients primarily at the Hospital for Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto.
Theodore Leng, MD, FACS

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Leng was the first surgeon in California to perform a subretinal transplant of adult neural stem cells into patients with macular degeneration and is actively researching cellular, biologic and laser-based therapies for macular degeneration. He also has an active program in imaging informatics and deep learning to perform big data analyses of retinal scans to identify patients who are at risk for retinal disease deterioration. The end goal is earlier detection and rapid treatment to maximize visual outcomes.
Dr. Leng is considered a leading expert optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive and non-contact imaging technique for the retina. He is also a leader in OCT-based angiography (OCTA), a novel way of imaging the microvasculature of the retina.
