BioMy research interests are focused on understanding the molecular basis of early development and stem cells, as it is often aberrations in stem cells or signaling mechanisms between tissues that lead to diseased states, including tumor development and cancer progression. Knowledge of stem cells and development is also critical to develop appropriate cell-based therapies for various diseases or injuries. My prior and current works take advantage of both traditional techniques (gene targeting, lineage tracing) and state-of-the-art technologies (Single cell RNA sequencing, Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP-seq), Imaging Mass Cytometry) to elucidate fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying signaling in tissue biology.

BioSharif Vakili, MD, MBA, MS, (pronouns: he/him), is an internal medicine physician and educator. He practices at Stanford Los Altos Primary Care.
Dr. Vakili has a background in chronic disease management and health systems delivery, believing strongly in a teamwork approach to patient care that empowers patients to navigate the health system as part of their clinical care.
He is active in the research and business communities. His research has been in peer-reviewed journals including JAMA Network Open, the Annals of Emergency Medicine, Quality Management in Healthcare, and Journal of Clinical Rheumatology.
Dr. Vakili is also the inventor of Remote Patient Intervention (RPI), a model of clinician-supervised AI care delivery first performed at Stanford during a clinical study published in JAMA Network Open. -

Tulio Valdez, MD, MSc

BioDr. Tulio A Valdez is a surgeon scientist born and raised in Colombia with a subspecialty interest in Pediatric Otolaryngology. He attended medical school at Universidad Javeriana in Bogota Colombia before undertaking his residency in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in Boston. He completed his Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital (2007), Houston and obtained his Master’s in Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Connecticut.
Clinically, Dr. Valdez has an interest in pediatric sleep apnea. He has a special interest in the management of sinus disease in cystic fibrosis. Dr. Valdez has co-authored one textbook and numerous book chapters and scientific manuscripts. Dr. Valdez continues his clinical research in these areas, particularly with a focus on aerodigestive disorders.
Scientifically, Dr. Valdez has developed various imaging methods to diagnose otitis media and cholesteatoma a middle ear condition that can lead to hearing loss. He was part of the Laser Biomedical Research Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research includes novel imaging modalities to better diagnose ear infections one of the most common pediatric problems. His research has now expanded to include better intraoperative imaging modalities in pediatric patients to improve surgical outcomes without the need for radiation exposure.
Dr. Valdez believes in multi-disciplinary collaborations to tackle medical problems and has co-invented various medical devices and surgical simulation models. -

Informed by human genetics and by combining biochemical, structural biology, and functional genomics investigative techniques, his work aims to uncover the molecular basis of human disorders and disease. His current research at Stanford University aims to investigate and characterize chromatin regulatory processes in human brain development and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Keara E. Valentine

BioKeara E. Valentine, Psy.D., is a clinical assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine in the Psychosocial Treatment Clinic and OCD Clinic, where she specializes in the assessment and treatment of OCD and related disorders. Dr. Valentine utilizes behavioral-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing anxiety-related disorders.
Dr. Valentine completed an APA accredited pre-doctoral internship at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital, where she complete a rotation in OCD and anxiety disorders and a rotation in Eating Disorders. Dr. Valentine has experience working with individuals with OCD, anxiety, and/or eating disorders at various levels of care including outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential, and inpatient. -
Praveesh Valissery

BioPraveesh was raised in Chennai, India and studied Biotechnology at the Loyola College while minoring in English Literature. He received his Ph.D. from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi, India). He has experience in organic chemical synthesis and molecular biology. With Prof. Suman Kumar Dhar, he studied the cell cycle of the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) and worked on the optimization of water-soluble Artemisinin nanopreparations in the mouse model of malaria (Plasmodium berghei). His PhD thesis concerned “The design, discovery and improvement of novel and existing antimalarial compounds”. He helped in the synthesis and characterization of a novel class of hybrid antimalarial drug, CQ-CFX.
In the Egan lab, Praveesh is interested in exploring essential protein-protein interactions taking place at the interface between the malaria parasite and the red blood cell at key moments during invasion. His research involves the use of genome editing tools, including lentiviral and adenoviral vectors to modify hematopoietic stem cells and generate genetically modified red blood cells by ex vivo erythropoiesis.
In the long term, he hopes to
1. acquire enough skill to study and develop antimalarial vaccine antigens and improve existing vaccine formulations.
2. employ a reverse genetics approach to understand mechanisms that facilitate parasite invasion using genetically modified red blood cells. -

Laurent D Valosek

BioMr. Valosek has 35 years of experience as an entrepreneur, educator and researcher. He was co-founder and CEO of Integrated Devices LLC, a wireless engineering consulting firm, Xistor Technology Development Corporation, a semiconductor intellectual property company, and Sophia Communications, a wireless technology development and wide area network service provider. He also co-founded a strategy and business development consulting firm, Lakshmi Technologies, with partners from the Boston Consulting Group and Deloitte, focused on providing services to early stage high technology companies. Mr. Valosek has extensive experience in the areas of strategy, planning, recruiting, training, business development and general management.
In addition to his business expertise, Mr. Valosek has a long standing interest in the role of human development as it relates to health, education, organizational effectiveness and social transformation. He helped conduct NIH-funded research on meditation and heart health at the West Oakland Health Center and ADHD research with middle school students in the Albany Unified School District. He co-founded the Center for Wellness and Achievement in Education in 2007, for the purpose of providing evidence-based wellness programs to students, schools, school districts and other community organizations. -
Laura van Dam

BioI am both trained as a biomedical researcher and medical doctor in internal medicine and strive to close the gap between the clinic and fundamental sciences with translational research. My focus is to study the mechanisms of autoimmune diseases and to translate research insights into therapeutics targeting autoimmunity. I have received my PhD in 2022 in Leiden for studying neutrophil extracellular traps and autoreactive B cells in renal autoimmune diseases. My postdoctoral research project in the Robinson lab focuses on investigating the underlying molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of ANCA-associated vasculitis. I particularly aim to identify potential microbial triggers and molecular mimicry in ANCA-associated vasculitis, by characterizing the nasal microbiome and sequencing T cells and B cells of ANCA-associated vasculitis patients.

Stephanie Van de Ven
Member, Stanford Cancer Institute
BioAs Deputy Director of the Canary Center at Stanford for Cancer Early Detection I broadly oversee its operations and research programs. The Canary Center is focused on developing in vitro and in vivo tools for early cancer detection and its research spans the areas of biomarker discovery, development of molecular imaging agents, development of new diagnostic and imaging devices, and mathematical modeling. In my position I facilitate the clinical translation of cancer diagnostic tools and I enable innovative interdisciplinary research. My research expertise includes leading phase I-II clinical trials to evaluate a newly developed optical breast imaging system in combination with a novel imaging agent. I gained valuable experience in clinical translation of medical devices and in testing new imaging agents for the first time in patients. My training as a Radiology resident was instrumental in my decision to focus on cancer early detection research, because it clearly confronted me with the problem that most cancer patients are being diagnosed too late. I expanded my knowledge on biomarker research by developing proteomics assays during my postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford, in conjunction with my continued work in optical and photoacoustic molecular imaging. In my current role, I work with the faculty of the Canary Center and the Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford, and am committed to advancing cancer research by applying my medical training, clinical knowledge, and research expertise to managing collaborative programs and contribute to the success of the Center and its faculty.

Laurens van de Wiel

BioLaurens van de Wiel is Dutch scientist from Berghem, The Netherlands. Laurens spent his undergrad in Software Development (BSc, Avans Hogeschool ‘s-Hertogenbosch) and Computing Science (MSc, Radboud University Nijmegen). Laurens continued his career at a start-up, where he created large-scale, real-time analytical software. Laurens continued on his academic trajectory at the Radboudumc in Nijmegen, where he started his PhD in bioinformatics.
During his PhD, Laurens integrated genetic data with protein 3D structures and protein domains. He utilized the skills he obtained before setting out on his academic trajectory; building large-scale, robust, reliable software. Exemplified by the MetaDome Web server (https://stuart.radboudumc.nl/metadome/). During his PhD, he developed novel methodologies for the interpretation of genetic variants of unknown clinical significance and, by integrating structural and evolutionary biology with genomics, Laurens identified 36 novel disease-gene associations for developmental disorders. These discoveries enabled diagnosis for over 500 families worldwide.
Laurens’ areas of expertise are (bioinformatic) software development, data integration of genetic variation with other omics, and his research aims are:
1.) Lessons long-learned in computer science aid computational biology
2.) Multi-omic data integration allows the impact measurement of genetic variation
3.) Diagnosing undiagnosed disorders will uncover novel insights into biology.
4.) International and multidisciplinary collaborations are key in diagnosing rare disorders.
At Stanford University, under guidance of Dr. Matthew Wheeler, he is conducting his postdoctoral studies in line with his research aims. -

Keith Van Haren, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research team is working to develop new treatments for children at risk of neurodegenerative diseases. We are primarily focused on multiple sclerosis and X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, two conditions that involve inflammatory and metabolic disruption of the myelin that insulates brain cells. A key area of interest for us is how nutrient deficiencies during childhood may contribute to the disease processes and whether nutritional interventions could play a role in prevention.

Maike van Niekerk, PhD

BioMaike van Niekerk is pursuing an MD at Stanford School of Medicine as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar. She is currently applying into orthopaedic surgery residency.
Maike earned her bachelor’s degree in cancer- and global health-focused nursing at Dalhousie University as a Schulich Leader Scholar, and her Ph.D. in Psychiatry at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Upon completing her Ph.D., she worked as a consultant for the World Health Organization advising on guideline development for integrating mental and physical healthcare in low-resource settings. Her research expertises are in the development and implementation of biopsychosocial models of care.
At Stanford, she is working alongside Dr. Tileston and members of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Research Program to develop new models of care for pediatric patients with scoliosis, aimed at improving mental and physical health outcomes in this patient population.
Maike aspires to improve healthcare access for underserved communities by pioneering holistic treatment programs combining insights from medicine, psychiatry, and nursing to improve care for orthopaedic patients. -

Capucine Van Rechem

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy long-term interest lies in understanding the impact chromatin modifiers have on disease development and progression so that more optimal therapeutic opportunities can be achieved. My laboratory explores the direct molecular impact of chromatin-modifying enzymes during cell cycle progression, and characterizes the unappreciated and unconventional roles that these chromatin factors have on cytoplasmic function such as protein synthesis.

Peter Johannes van Roessel
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Peter van Roessel, MD PhD, completed his MD at Stanford University and his residency training in psychiatry at Columbia University and the New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, with additional training in psychodynamic psychotherapy (TFP) via the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Prior to joining the clinical faculty at Stanford, he worked for several years as Associate Director of the general research unit of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, a premier state-funded research hospital affiliated with Columbia University.
At Stanford, Dr. van Roessel sees adult mood and anxiety disorders outpatients through the Assessment Clinics and participates in resident training and patient care as director of the resident Continuity Clinic and as a supervisor in psychodynamic psychotherapy. He additionally directs the third-year resident curriculum in psychopathology and psychopharmacology. As a member of the department's Rodriguez Translational Therapeutics Lab, he sees individuals with obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders for evaluations and research-protocol driven clinical treatment and contributes to and leads clinical neuroscience studies pioneering rapid-acting interventions in OCD. Clinically motivated research interests include the nature and neural correlates of metacognitive ‘awareness’ (insight) in OCD and related disorders, and particularly the relationship of awareness to mechanisms of attentional control.
Dr. van Roessel pursued research training in basic neuroscience prior to his clinical training, completing an MPhil in Biology via the Open University, UK, for research performed at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen Germany, and a PhD in molecular and developmental neurobiology at the University of Cambridge, UK. He has contributed to work in the lab of Dr Julia Kaltschmidt (Stanford) on studies of GABAergic/Glutamatergic interneuronal circuity in mouse. He received a 2018 NARSAD Young Investigator Award to pursue study of nitrous oxide as a rapid-acting treatment for OCD, he was a 2020-2022 Miller Foundation Fellow, and from 2020 to 2022 was a Advanced Fellow in Mental Illness Treatment and Research via the Sierra Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center of the Palo Alto VA. Dr. van Roessel is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Psychiatrists. -
Henk van Voorst

BioDr. van Voorst is a postdoctoral scholar in Radiology studying the interfaces of artificial intelligence and neuroradiological imaging in stroke. Originally educated as an MD, Dr. van Voorst gained additional degrees in Finance and Data Science. As a PhD student, Dr. van Voorst focused on cost-effectiveness modeling and developed machine learning and deep learning algorithms with applications in acute ischemic stroke imaging. In his current research, Dr. van Voorst develops artificial intelligence algorithms to automatically extract information from arteries and veins in radiological stroke imaging.

Personalized screening regimens for those at increased genetic risk, such as for colon cancer, is another important application worthy of validation.

My researcher focuses on thalamocortical circuits involving cortical structures relevant for cognition and executive function. Taking advantage of mouse models of autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy, I aim to uncover defects in synaptic function that underlie these disorders.

Anubodh Sunny Varshney

BioDr. Anubodh Sunny Varshney is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the fellowship program in the section of Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant Cardiology, and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Stanford. In addition to caring for patients with advanced heart disease, he is also an Investigator in the Cardiovascular Outcomes, Policy, & Implementation Research Group (https://www.copirgroup.com/) where he works to identify patient groups that have ongoing unmet medical needs, define benchmark outcomes that next generation therapies should improve upon, and understand factors that influence adoption of novel drug and device therapies.
Dr. Varshney earned a BS in biomedical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and an MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He completed residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant Cardiology, and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Stanford University.
Dr. Varshney also has experience advising multiple medical device, drug, and digital health start-ups and currently serves as a Venture Advisor at Broadview Ventures, a philanthropically-funded, mission-driven investment organization that invests in early-stage companies developing technologies that have the potential to improve outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease or stroke. -
