Keri Brenner
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioKeri O. Brenner, MD, MPA, FAAHPM is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and is board-certified in both psychiatry and hospice and palliative medicine. She earned her bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, where she subsequently served on the Board of Trustees (2005 to 2008). She received her medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, where she earned the Keese Prize for her honors thesis on the phenomenology of suffering in illness. She earned a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School as a Zuckerman Fellow at the Center for Public Leadership. She subsequently completed her adult psychiatry residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital, followed by fellowship training in hospice and palliative medicine at Harvard.
Dr. Brenner is a nationally recognized leader in “PalliPsych” education initiatives that integrate psychiatric, psychological, and psychotherapeutic principles into serious illness care. Her scholarship explores how psychological formulation and concepts drawn from psychotherapy can deepen serious illness communication and therapeutic presence. She has authored an extensive body of peer-reviewed scholarship and is co-editor of a 10-article special series in the Journal of Palliative Medicine on psychotherapeutically informed serious illness communication. She has delivered hundreds of grand rounds, invited presentations, keynote addresses, and intensive workshops at leading institutions and professional conferences nationally and internationally.
Dr. Brenner serves as Chair of the Stanford Jonathan King Lectureship Committee; Founder and Chair of the AAHPM Bogetz Lectureship Advisory Group; Director of Stanford’s Clinician Educator Scholars Program (PCPH Division); and a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Hippocratic Society. Her honors include Stanford’s Outstanding Palliative Care Faculty Award, AAHPM Emerging Leader (2024); visiting professorships at Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Manitoba, support from Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (2019), and a Stanford Catalyst Grant for ELEVATE, an AI-integrated training program in psychologically informed serious illness care.
Dr. Brenner's formative service at Mother Teresa’s Home for the Dying in Kolkata, India, profoundly shaped her vocation in palliative care. Outside of medicine, she enjoys the beauty of Northern California with her husband and four children. -
Akemi Laura Brown
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Akemi Brown (she/her) is board-certified Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine physician who practices at the Stanford Internal Medicine Clinic in Palo Alto.
She graduated summa cum laude from UC San Diego with a B.S. in Human Biology. She then attended the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program where she received her MS in Health and Medical Sciences from UC Berkeley School of Public Health and her MD from UCSF. She completed her internal medicine residency in the UCSF Primary Care General Internal Medicine (UCPC-GIM) track with a Health Professions Education pathway. Following residency, she completed the UCSF Division of General Internal Medicine Clinician Educator fellowship with Area of Concentration in Weight Management.
Dr. Brown is a Bay Area native who is passionate about providing patient centered care to patients in both primary care and weight management. She is also an active clinician educator who enjoys teaching medical students and residents as well as developing educational curriculum. Her work has spanned research into health disparities, interprofessional program development, and quality improvement for cervical cancer screenings.
