Joshua Menke
Clinical Associate Professor, Pathology
BioDr. Joshua Menke completed his hematopathology fellowship at Stanford and a cytopathology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). His clinical and research interests lie at the intersection of hematopathology, cytopathology, and advanced single-cell and cell-free diagnostic techniques. As the Associate Section Director of Clinical Flow Cytometry at Stanford, Dr. Menke is developing and validating new minimal residual disease assays for detecting low levels of myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms in the post-treatment setting, as well as multiple other 12-color flow assays with the latest markers for routine phenotyping.
Dr. Menke is the recipient of the Paul E. Strandjord Young Investigator Award from the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Scientists and the Laurence J. Marton Award for Excellence in Research from UCSF for his translational work on CALR mutations at the UCSF Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. Dr. Menke is a founding member of the Cytology-Hematopathology Interinstitutional Collaboration (CHIC), which aims to study the performance of cytology samples in diagnosing lymphoma across large datasets from five academic institutions. He currently chairs this group, leading large clinical research studies. -

We have made a series of discoveries that have identified a central role for ecDNA (extrachromosomal DNA) in cancer development, progression, accelerated tumor evolution and drug resistance.

Thomas Montine, MD, PhD

BioDr. Montine is the Stanford Medicine Endowed Professor, Chair of Stanford Pathology Department, and member of the National Academy of Medicine. He received his education and medical training at Columbia University, McGill University, and Duke University, and was junior faculty at Vanderbilt University where he was awarded the Thorne Professorship. In 2002, Dr. Montine was appointed as the Alvord Endowed Professor in Neuropathology at the University of Washington where he was Director of the University of Washington Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, one of the original 10 Centers in the US, and founding Director of the Pacific Udall Center, a NINDS-funded Center of Excellence for Parkinson’s Disease Research. Dr. Montine was Chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Washington from 2010 to 2016 when he was appointed Chair of the Department of Pathology at Stanford University where he is the Stanford Medicine Endowed Professor.
The focus of the Montine Laboratory is on the structural and molecular bases of cognitive impairment. The Montine Laboratory addresses this prevalent, unmet medical need through a combination of neuropathology, biomarkers for detection and progression of early disease, and experimental studies that test hypotheses concerning specific mechanisms of neuron injury and then develop novel approaches to neuroprotection. Our current approaches include small molecule precision therapeutics and cell replacement strategies for brain. -

BioI am a very curious person who likes to understand how things work and I love to contribute to new discoveries that will help to cope with tomorrow’s challenges. After my studies at the Ecole Normale Supérieure Ulm, I got specialized in plant science. I am interested in this research field because plants are critical for environment as well as for food and bio-energy production. In 2016, I joined CEA Cadarache for my PhD which led me to participate in a research program on hydrocarbon synthesis in algae. I really liked this project which was focusing on both reaching a bio-based production of hydrocarbons for fuel production and deciphering of the hydrocarbon synthesis pathway in algae. I have been leading research to assess the occurrence of this pathway in the different types of eukaryotic algae, its evolutionary history and its relevance for algal physiology. I am now going to study another evolutionary history that has led to a symbiosis between a diatom and a N-fixing cyanobacteria, the latest being on its way to become an organelle. Understanding the physiological relationship between the diatom and the cyanobacteria will help understanding nitrogen cycle and could lead to major innovations in farming.

Roberto Novoa, MD

Clinical Professor, DermatologyCurrent Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research interests include the medical applications of artificial intelligence, cutaneous lymphoma, and the side effects of targeted therapies. I have served as the lead dermatologist in our ongoing effort to develop AI-augmented classification of skin lesions. We are in the process of establishing one of the first prospective studies examining the performance of a deep learning algorithm in real-world patients.

Jean Oak

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Oak received her MD and PhD from University of California, Irvine, and completed her anatomic pathology and clinical pathology residency, hematopathology fellowship, and transfusion medicine fellowship at Stanford University. Her research and clinical interests include clinical assay development for tumor immunophenotyping, lymphocyte subset monitoring, and immunotherapy target antigen assessment in a variety of hematologic and immunologic disorders. As director of a clinical flow cytometry laboratory, she oversees the design, validation, and implementation of various immunophenotyping assays in addition to ensuring quality assurance and regulatory compliance for CLIA certification.
