    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI conduct interdisciplinary research to understand literacy as potentially modifiable lens for addressing maternal and child health disparities from birth through early adulthood. Applying mixed methods approaches (health-services, epidemiology, ethnography), I have been principal investigator on extramurally-funded research projects (NIH, PCORI, FDA) that aim to examine "natural experiments" in policy and/or to design, implement and test novel system-level interventions.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Sanders is the Program Director of the Comprehensive Care Unit at Stanford where she teaches and works with inpatients with eating disorders. She has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders for the past 35 years at Stanford. She has written extensively and presented nationally on the subject of the evaluation and treatment of eating disorders and also in the field of child abuse, specifically in the area of Munchausen by proxy.

    Dr. Sanders is also involved with an international outreach project in Ghana called Project Okurase. This project involved an annual medical health outreach in the village. The project is also creating a model village which includes the building of a medical clinic, vocational school, and homes for families that take in orphans. The project is also involved with bringing safe water, building compost toilets, and bringing solar energy to the village.

    BioAlex Sandhu, MD, MS is a cardiologist with a special interest in the care of patients with advanced heart failure. He graduated from the seven-year combined BA-MD program at Northwestern with a focus on economics and mathematics. He completed an internal medicine residency at Stanford University, spending 16 weeks at Makerere Hospital in Uganda as part of the Global Health track. He subsequently earned a Masters in Health Services Research at Stanford while acting as a fellow in health services research at the Palo Alto VA and Stanford's Center for Health Policy/Primary Care and Outcomes Research. Next, he completed fellowships in cardiology and advanced heart failure and transplant at Stanford before joining the faculty.

    Alex is now an active clinician and heart failure researcher who focuses on health economics, the implementation of high-value care strategies, comparative effectiveness, and innovative clinical trial design. He is passionate about patient care and finding ways to bring meaningful improvements to patients’ lives. He is involved in several clinical trials including the K-23 funded PRO-HF (patient centered quality of life assessments), DOT-HF (mobile device based implementation trial), and a CAC notification pilot trial (patient centered coronary artery calcification notification).

    In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer as well as entertaining and being entertained by his joyful sons, Kyle and Tyler.

    Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences

    BioDr. Gisela Sandoval is a physician scientist with dual board certification who specializes in medical-psychiatric illness caring for individuals that suffer from medical conditions at the interface of medicine and psychiatry, which often requires complex chronic care. In addition she treats children with a broad range of psychiatric disorders including neurodevelopmental disorders, ADHD and mood and anxiety disorders in adolescents. She has a thorough and comprehensive way to approach her patients; she considers not only the clinical symptoms but also the impact of the family structure and the functioning of the child at school. Dr. Sandoval has a special interest in establishing standard of care guidelines to address the needs of chronically ill children to promote healthy habits and medical treatment compliance that promote health and decrease the burden of chronic medical and psychiatric illness.
    Dr. Sandoval graduated with honors from the California Institute of Technology where she performed research in brain physiology and evolution. She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School where she also completed a Ph.D. specializing in molecular neurobiology and genetics. Dr. Sandoval completed her residency in general psychiatry at the University of Chicago, during which she received the NIMH Outstanding Resident Award. She went on to complete a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency of Columbia and Cornell Universities. After training she became the Clinical Director of the Warren Wright Adolescent Center at Northwestern University developing a successful clinical program focused on early identification and intervention for adolescents at risk of mental illness before moving to Stanford.
    Dr. Sandoval scientific interests focus on understanding the molecular, neurophysiological and neural circuits that are responsible for healthy brain development and behavior and understanding how these are altered in the developmental neuropsychiatric disorders resulting in pathological behaviors with the expectation that that could lead to new treatments. Furthermore, she is interested in identifying quantifiable metrics of behavior to better diagnosis mental illness by exploring the use of physical activity monitors to help assess the effectiveness of medical therapies.

  • Ryan Sandoval, M.D.

    Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine

    BioDr. Sandoval is a board-certified cardiologist and a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Texas at Austin, where he continued on as chief resident before going on to complete his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Medical University of South Carolina. Prior to his residency, he completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

    His clinical interests include preventive cardiology and management of heart failure. He is particularly focused on treating patients with the complex clinical syndrome of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

    His interest in preventive cardiology grew through his participation in clinics for the uninsured and underinsured during his training. These experiences fostered his passion for understanding and addressing health care disparities. He is deeply committed to providing exceptional patient care with a personalized approach to treatment and improving the lives of his patients.

    He is a member of the American College of Cardiology.

    Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health

    BioDr. Sands currently serves as the Clinical Section Chief of Palliative Care at Stanford University. She graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 2001 with a BA in Chemistry. She then attended Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2002-2006. She completed a residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, MA and went on to complete her Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) fellowship at the Harvard combined program at Massachusetts General Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute in 2011. She spent 8 years at the University of Pittsburgh where she served as core teaching faculty and the HPM Fellowship Program Director. Her clinical work has focused on the intersection of oncology and palliative care. Her primary interests are in mentorship and the advancement of palliative care within the structure of academic medicine including ambulatory practice. She has a particular focus on resiliency skill development for trainees, staff, and faculty as well a commitment to the innovation of ways to create meaning in our everyday lives as health care professionals.

    BioDr Sanislo has over 20 years of experience in clinical and surgical practice in retinal and vitreoretinal diseases. He is the senior vitreoretinal surgeon at Stanford and maintains a large clinical practice as well as teaching ophthalmology residents and retina fellows. He also participates in clincal reasearch for varying retinal conditions. Dr. Sanislo recieved ophthalmology training as a resident here at Stanford, and recieved vitreoretinal training as a fellow at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

    Research interests include treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases.

    Dr. Sanislo has extensive clinical and surgical experience in the following diseases:

She also works at Lucille Packard on Labor and Delivery. She has a background in community health work in quality improvement. She is committed to safe, equitable health care and has a patient-centered, evidence-based practice approach.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study chronic suppurative otitis media, a chronic biofilm infection of the middle ear predominantly involving pseudomonas and staph aureus. We are investigating mechanisms of sensory hearing loss, host microbe interactions and trialling novel therapeutics.

    Our work in tympanic membrane regeneration has entered clinical trials.

    Novel treatments for wound healing in intra oral wounds with potential applications to prevent post tonsillectomy wound healing and oral mucositis.

    BioEverton is currently a Visiting Instructor at Stanford University, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the School of Medicine.
    He has received his BSc degree in Electrical Engineering (2019) and MSc degree in Computer Science (2021) by the State University of Londrina (UEL), Brazil. From 2015 to 2016, he was an exchange student at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands, where he followed minors in Biomedical and Sensor System Engineering.
    He has worked with several Research and Development projects, englobing Machine Learning and Instrumentation Engineering applied to many domains.
    He has also worked as a Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná in the Cyber-Physical Systems theme.
    His current research interest is in Data Science applied to Biomedical Signals.

    BioDr. Santiago is Board-certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, specializing in Neurology. He completed his Adult Neurology residency at the University of Toronto and is now a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Comprehensive Neurology at Stanford University. He provides comprehensive neurological care to patients with a broad range of neurological conditions. His academic interests focus on improving access to neurological care, such as reducing wait times and stream-lining referrals so that patients are directed to the most appropriate care provider.

    BioDr. Christine Santiago is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stanford Division of Hospital Medicine with a deep commitment to improving healthcare access and equity. Dr. Santiago earned her M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School graduating cum laude and completed an M.P.H. in Health Policy and Management at the University of California Berkeley.

    Throughout her career, Dr. Santiago has actively engaged in various leadership roles and initiatives, such as co-founding the Stanford Health Equity, Advocacy and Research Program (Stanford HEARs), a resident-led program aimed at addressing healthcare disparities. She also had the privilege of serving as Chief Resident, where she supported educational activities and mentored fellow residents.

    With a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, Dr. Santiago has been involved in multiple professional associations, including the American College of Physicians and the California Medical Association, to promote diversity within healthcare. Additionally, she has contributed to curriculum development, mentorship programs, and research activities, all in the pursuit of advancing healthcare, improving patient outcomes and creating a more equitable healthcare system for all patients.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study the organizing principles of the genome and how these principles regulate cell identity and developmental switches. We combine Biochemistry and Biophysical methods such as NMR and Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange-MS with Cell Biology, and Genetics to explore genome organization across length and time scales and understand how cells leverage the diverse biophysical properties of chromatin to regulate genome function.

    Chethan Sarabu

    Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - General Pediatrics

    BioChethan Sarabu, MD trained in landscape architecture, pediatrics, and clinical informatics builds anastomoses across these fields to design healthier environments and systems. He is a clinical assistant professor of Pediatrics at Stanford Medicine, Director of Clinical Informatics at Sharecare. Across these roles, he works on designing and implementing a wide array of innovations ranging from patient portals, EHR transformation, virtual clinical trials, and A.I. driven digital biomarkers, to health information policy initiatives all through a lens of health equity and patient privacy.

    He takes care of patients in a community based academic general pediatrics practice at the Gardner Packard Clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center, where he has also assisted with EHR implementation and transition. He cares deeply on involving children in their own care and strongly focused on protecting the privacy and confidentiality of adolescents in an increasingly digital healthcare system. He helped to form and co-chair the national workgroup, Shift which has been working to promote equitable interoperability.

    Drawing on his background in landscape architecture, Chethan implements and researches nature based health solutions in collaboration with the Stanford Natural Capital Project. Finally, further exploring the role of environment and human health, he is shaping the emergent field of climate health informatics.
