Katherine Burke

Staff, Woods InstituteBioKathy Burke is the Human and Planetary Health Lead at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, a Lecturer in the Doerr School for Sustainability and a Senior Advisor at the School of Medicine's Center for Innovation in Global Health. She is a co-instructor in BIO 103/203 Human and Planetary Health and SUSTAIN 140 Environmental Humanities. She works across campus advancing the field of human and planetary health, setting strategy, managing grants, and bringing new voices to campus.
In 2019-20 she was a Distinguished Career Institute Fellow, studying climate impacts on health.
From 2015-19, she served as Deputy Director of Stanford’s Center for Innovation in Global Health, where she co-created and led the inaugural Women Leaders in Global Health conference in 2017 and the international Planetary Health Alliance Annual Meeting in 2019, both at Stanford. She helped to found WomenLIFT, an innovative leadership training program for mid-career professionals around the world, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, Kathy began her career as a reporter, editor and publishing executive. She later earned an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a Master of Science in Global Health Sciences from the University of California, San Francisco.
Kathy enjoys working at the interfaces of disciplines and sectors and creating cross-cutting teams to address big social problems. Ms. Burke serves on the Board of Dean’s Advisers at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health and the Advisory Council for Stanford University Libraries. -
Sadie Rosalie Gruenwald Cwikiel

BioSadie is a senior majoring in Earth Systems in the Oceans and Climate track and minoring in creative writing. She grew up in Northern Michigan and has always loved spending time outside. She is interested in oceanography, tropical ecosystems, and conservation. Her favorite Stanford quarter was spent studying ecology and anthropology during the Wrigley Field Program in Hawaii. Her group research project on parrotfish in Hawaiian coral reefs inspired her love for marine ecosystems. Sadie also studied abroad in Santiago, Chile, and enjoyed hiking in the Andes and practicing Spanish. She has spent her summers researching the impacts of drought and flooding events on soil respiration, working with a citizen science program in the Peruvian rainforest, and sailing through the Phoenix Islands Protected Area during a SEA Semester. Outside of academics, Sadie enjoys leading SPOT and adventure trips with Stanford Outdoor Education, leading tours at Jasper Ridge, playing drums in LSJUMB, creative writing, and dancing. In her free time, she likes to go hiking and camping, do ceramics, or go to the beach.

Current Role at StanfordPatti is the Assistant Director, Administration in the Stanford Woods Institute. She handles all human resource and faculty affairs matters, has oversight of executive office operations and support of donor relations and activities including the Stanford Woods Institute Advisory Council.

Thomas Johnson

BioTom manages communications for two water-related programs within the Stanford Woods Insitute for the Environment: Water in the West; and Water, Health & Development. Prior to coming to Stanford in 2022, Tom managed a graduate program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo that prepared students for careers in the dairy foods industry. A seasoned communications professional, he once served as business editor at The Coloradoan, a Gannett daily newspaper, and was editor of Outlook Magazine, a publication of Colorado State University's College of Natural Sciences. Tom earned a Master's degree in Watershed Science from Colorado State University and was the founding director of the Colorado Springs-based Fountain Creek Watershed Project, an intergovernmental task force that won consensus buy-in for a plan that guides management of the Pikes Peak watershed. Tom is also an award-winning cheesemaker and musician.

Mao-wei Lo

Other Tech - Graduate, Center for Ocean SolutionsBioMao-wei Lo is a J.S.D. Candidate at Stanford Law School. He received his J.S.M. (2019) from Stanford Law School; and his LL.B. (2012) and LL.M. (2015) from National Taiwan University (NTU), with the honor of 2011 and 2012 Presidential Awards (awarded to students with academic performance in the top 5% of their class). In 2016, he was also awarded a Ministry of Education Scholarship to study International Organizations and International Law.
Before coming to Stanford, Mr. Lo served as the Senior Officer at Department of Legal Affairs, Mainland Affairs Council (Taiwan’s government agency responsible for research, planning, review, and coordination of Mainland China policies and affairs) from 2015. He also worked as Teaching Assistant at NTU College of Law and Research Assistant at Asian Center for WTO and International Health Law and Policy. In addition, he served as the Chief Editor of the Asian Journal of WTO & International Health Law and Policy in 2014.
Active in legal academia, Mr. Lo has presented at numerous conferences and seminars. His legal scholarship has appeared in journals and edited collections, including Asian Journal of WTO & International Health Law and Policy, Contemporary Asia Arbitration Journal, and Global Arbitration Review. -

Luis Tam

Temp - Non-Exempt, Woods InstituteBioLuis is the Associate Director of Finance and Administration at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. Luis works to provide strategic planning, financial management, performance dashboards, and research administration for the Institute and its programs.
Luis is trained and skilled in major areas of health care executive management, primarily in new business development and operational improvements in a wide range of settings. His experience includes clinical and academic areas of Clinical Laboratories, Pathology, Emergency Medicine, Clinical Neurophysiology, Nuclear Medicine, Pulmonary Function, and Ambulatory Clinics.
Prior to joining the Stanford Woods Institute, Tam was the Assistant Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development at UCLA Health Systems in West Los Angeles. Previously, he had served as Director of Finance for Pathology and the Clinical Laboratories for Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He has a strong interest in environmental issues. He has traveled extensively around the world and has led natural history tours to Africa and the Galapagos. He holds a MBA in Finance from Colorado Technical University and a Bachelors of Science degree in Microbiology from San Jose State University. -
Roberta Tugendreich

BioRoberta is a member of Woods' Policy & Engagement Team, working closely with the DC office to promote our solutions-based environmental research to policy and decision makers throughout California. She also helps manage Woods' graduate student and postdoc educational and leadership programs including RELP. Roberta came to Woods from Stanford's Department of Communication where she supported student services and faculty affairs. Prior to Stanford, she oversaw environmental education programming and outreach activities at The Land Trust of Napa County, Romberg Tiburon Center (SFSU), and UCSF's Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics.
